The chief reason I recommend this is that it chronicles a friendship of a sort that is all too often ignored; the friendship between a young, gay man and a straight, older woman. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. The term “reboot” is often used as a catchall for different kinds of revivals and remakes. “Remakes” are derivations or reimaginings of known properties with new characters, cast, and stories (Loock; Lavigne). “Revivals” bring back an existing property in the form of a continuation with the same cast and/or setting. “Revivals” and “remakes” both seek to capitalise on nostalgia for a specific notion of the past and access the (presumed) existing audience of the earlier series (Mittell; Rebecca Williams; Johnson). Reboots operate around two key pleasures. First, there is the pleasure of revisiting and/or reimagining characters that are “known” to audiences. Whether continuations or remakes, reboots are invested in the audience’s desire to see familiar characters. Second, there is the desire to “fix” and/or recuperate an earlier series. Some reboots, such as the Charmed remake attempt to recuperate the whiteness of the original series, whereas others such as Gilmore Girls: A Life in the Year (2017) set out to fix the ending of the original series by giving audiences a new “official” conclusion. Seven years later, like the seven years of “plenty” in the Joseph story (or the seven years of famine, depending on one’s personal taste), the sordid, humorous and very much provocative tale of Essex County’s Soprano family has finally come to, what can only be described as, an abrupt halt. Abrupt is certainly the correct word to describe the ending of the last episode. In fact, it ended so suddenly that most viewers actually thought that their cable had lost its connection (or their TiVOs had prematurely shut off). But it was all planned—some say brilliantly, and some say sadistically, and even others contend stupidly—under the direction of David Chase. I cannot think of any other television production that has generated as much interest and devotion as has Mr. Chase’s “The Sopranos”. Even the termination of M*A*S*H or the “Who Shot J.R.?” episode of Dallas seem to pale in comparison to the frenzy surrounding the conclusion of the complex and enigmatic (and for some disturbing) themes and plot-lines of Tony Soprano’s nuclear and extended families. “The Sopranos” is in a class by itself, and if by virtue of thematic comparison with “The Godfather” which—as many contend—was the greatest film ever made, then “The Sopranos” not merely raised the bar for television, but bent it completely out of shape. This was a drama whose protagonist was an anxiety-ridden sociopath who cried over lost ducks but dispassionately asphyxiated his nephew when his loyalty began to come into question.
