Senior Mathieu Kamba shot 51.2% overall and 72.7 (8 of 11) from three-point range. He averaged 17 ppg and 6.3 rbg.

√ POWER FIVE: UCA’s 96-69 victory over Cal on Dec. 6 in Berkeley was the first for the Bears over a Power 5 program since moving to NCAA Division I in 2006-07. UCA almost had another one earlier this season, ironically against another Pac-12 team, when it lost 106-101 in overtime at No. 20 UCLA on Nov. 15 at Pauley Pavilion. The closest losses previously to Power 5 teams were an 87-84 loss to Rutgers (Big Ten) in 2015, a 79-72 loss at Mississippi State (SEC) in 2012 and a 76-73 loss at Oklahoma (Big 12) in 2010. √ NOTABLES: UCA held Lamar, the second-best three-point shooting team in the SLC entering the game, to just 4 of 31 (12.9%), then held UIW to 4 of 22 (18.2%) on Wednesday. Combined that is 8 of 53. Nicholls was 6 of 23 (26.1%), making UCA’s last three opponents 16 of 76 (21%). • UCA has lot seven games by seven points or less, two in OT. • In a rarity, all six road teams in the SLC won last Saturday. For the season, SLC teams are a combined 28-88 on the road. • Senior forward Ethan Lee had a compound dislocation of his right thumb in the loss at SHSU and has not played against Lamar, UIW or Nicholls. • Freshman center Hayden Koval, who missed the SHSU game with an ankle injury, has tied the school single-game blocked shot record of 7 twice this season, including last Thursday against Texas A&M-CC. He leads the SLC in blocks with 45 (2.6). • UCA is now 3-9 in Southland Conference openers after the win over Texas A&M-CC. Three of the losses were to Corpus (2008-09, 2009-10, 2013-14). UCA’s previous opening wins were against UT Arlington (2007-08) and Sam Houston State (2016-17). • The Bears had both their lowest scoring half (20 in first half) and their highest scoring half (58) in the overtime loss at Morehead State onDec.17. • The Bears forced a season-high 28 turnovers against MSU in the second meeting, the most since they forced 28 against Ecclesia on Dec. 30, 1013. • Senior Jordan Howard has now had nine career games scoring at least 30 points. • The Bears scored 100 points in back-to-back games (UCLA/Alcorn State)for the first time since the 1993-94 season, the first year in NCAA Division II. UCA beat Southern Arkansas 100-81 (Dec. 1, 1993) and SIU-Edwardsville 101-94 (Dec. 3). The Bears would score 100 points only once more that season. The school record was set in 1990-91 when the Bears hit the 100-point mark in the first seven games of the season and eight total for the year. That year wasthe first of two straight NAIA national runnerup finishes for theBears. • UCA has had double-figure assists in every game this season, with a high of 25 against Alcorn State. UCA has also blocked at least two shots in allbutonegame, with a high of 11 against South Carolina State. √ SLC POW: Senior guard Jordan Howard was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 20 after averaging 31 points and going 12 of 24 from three-point range in UCA’s two games that week. He scored 35 points and was 8 of 15 from beyond the arc in the OT loss at No. 18 UCLA. He added 27 points (4 threes) in a win over Alcorn State on Sunday at home. Howard earned his second SLC award on Dec. 27 after averaging 33.5 points and hitting 13 of 24 three-point attempts in road games at Morehead State and Oregon. He scord 32 at Morehead and had 35 points and 8 of 9 three-pointers at Oregon, tying the Matthew Knight Arena record for threes and coming up one point short of tying the arena scoring record. √ HOW(ARD) DO YOU DO: Howard has already rewritten the three-point record book at UCA, with a full season to play. Howard, from Chandler, Ariz., set the career three-point record midway through last season and now has 336 threes in his career, 130 ahead of the old UCA mark of 206 held by Marcus Pillow (2006-09). He is just the fourth player in league history to top 300 and broke the league record last Saturday against Lamar. Howard also owns the top two single-season marks at UCA as well, hitting 95 as a sophomore and 101 last season as a junior. His 77 three-pointers his freshman season ranks sixth best. He is at 63 threes this season (3.5 per game). Howard shot 44.5 percent from beyond the arc a year ago, and is a 42-percent three-point shooter for his career. Howard has scored 2,106 career points, putting him second all-time at UCA, 51 points behind UCA Sports Hall of Famer Clifton Bush. Howard surpassed NBA legend Scottie Pippen (1,600 points) last season. √ MORE SCORING: Senior guard/forward Mathieu Kamba became just the 19th player in UCA history to score 1,000 career points when he scored 15 earlier this season at UCLA. Kamba now has 1,209 career points, putting him 11th in UCA history. Kamba’s 614 career rebounds puts him 11th all-time at UCA, just 13 rebounds behind No. 10 Jim Pickett (1972-76). The school record is 1,162 by John Hutchcraft, a record that has stood since 1975. The Calgary, Alberta native scored a career-high 444 points last season, averaging 13.9 per game, to go along with a team-high 6.7 rebounds. Kamba was 11th in the Southland Conference in rebounding last season and was sixth in FG percentage (53.0). √ HOWARD II: Jordan Howard hit eight three-pointers against Morehead State last December, which is one short of tying the school record for a single game. He matched that at UCLA this season, going 8 for 15, and again at Oregon (8 of 9). Brian Hill (8 at Henderson State (2/25/95) also had eight. Marcus Pillow made 9 at UT Arlington (2/21/09). Howard has scored in double figures in 104 of his 108 career games at UCA, and has made at least one three-pointer in 104 of 108 games. His streak of71straight games with a three-pointer was broken in last year’s SLC Tournament loss to Sam Houston State when he went 0 for 4. Prior to that, his last miss from beyond the arc was against Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 13, 2015. Howard and his younger brother Markus, who was a freshman at Marquette last season, were both ranked in the Top 10 in the NCAA last year in 3-point %. √ NEW FACES: While the Bears return 12 players from last year’s team, they have added four key newcomers, three of which should help immediately this season. Freshman center Hayden Koval (7-0, 210) will be in the starting lineup, giving the Bears a true center they haven’t had in recent years. Freshman point guard Deandre Jones (5-11, 160) is another newcomer who will be on the court plenty this season, taking some of the ballhandling duties away from Jordan Howard. Freshman guard Matthew Mondesir (6-5, 200) will be one of the first newcomers off the bench. Freshman SK Shittu (6-9, 209) was expected to be a valuable addition this season but is being monitored for a health issue and will redshirt.

√ THE SCHEDULE: The Bears will once again undertake a brutal non-conference schedule under head coach Russ Pennell. UCA opens the season at Big 12 Baylor, and then faced UCLA on the road at storied Pauley Pavilion in Week 2. The Bears also have road trips to Oregon (Dec. 20), San Francisco (Dec. 4) and California (Dec. 6). Baylor finished 27-8 last season and won two games in the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins were even better, going 31-5 and winning twice in the NCAAsbeforelosing to Kentucky. At home, those teams combined to go 32-3 a year ago. A year ago, UCA played three NCAA Sweet 16 teams (Butler, Michigan, Wisconsin). This season they will take on three teams from the Pac-12 and one each from the Big 12, American Athletic Conference, West Coast Conference, Sun Belt and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference during their non-conference schedule. That is coupled with an 18-game Southland Conference slate that begins at home at the Farris Center. on Dec. 28 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Since Pennell arrived in 2014-15, UCA has also played at Nebraska, Oklahoma, Creighton, UMass, New Mexico, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and Michigan.

√ BRAINS & BASKETBALL: Junior guard Jordan Howard was named a third-team Academic All-American last season. The record-setting guard from Chandler, Ariz., has a 3.85 grade-point average, majoring in digital filmmaking. Howard was an Academic All-Region selection before earning UCA’s first Academic All-American award in men’s basketball since moving to NCAA Division I in 2006-07. Howard was a first-team All-SLC selection for the past two seasons, marking it three straight years for an SLC postseason award. He was the SLCFreshmanofthe Year in 2014-15. √ STARTING FROM SCRATCH: When Coach Russ Pennell arrived at UCA in 2014, the Bears were facing two seasons of APR penalties for low academic success. Pennell completely rebuilt the roster, retaining only sophomore Ethan Lee from the previous season and bringing in 11 new players for the 2014-15 year. The Bears sported a 3.1 combined grade-point average in their first semester under Pennell, and have settled in at a 3.2 every semester since. √ MAN: Coach Russ Pennell is in the UCA record books from his days as a point guard for the Bears. Pennell, who only played two seasons at UCA (1982-84), is still the career assist leader with 341 assists. His career average of 5.9 per game is also best in school history. Pennell’s 220 assists during the 1983-84 season is second-best, while his 7.6 average that same season remains No. 1. Pennell, who played his final season at UCA alongside NBA great Scottie Pippen (freshman year), averaged 7.4 points per game, shot 52.6 overall and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line. √ SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT: The Southland Conference returns to the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas next spring on March 7-10. The tournament will be played at the Merrell Center for the 11th consecutive year. The New Orleans Privateers won the 2017 tournament as the No. 1 seed, beating No. 5 Sam Houston State in the semifinals and No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in overtime in the championship game. UCA made the SLC Tournament field for the second timelastseasonas an eighth seed after the league had to break a five-way tie for eighth place in the final standings.

√ KEY LOSSES: The Bears lost two senior guards in Derreck Brooks and Jeff Lowery to graduation after last season.
