  • STAR POWER Rom Rock Music Legends to Broadway Showstoppers, There’S No Shortage of Star Power on Great Performances This Month
DECEMBER 2019 STAR POWER rom rock music legends to Broadway showstoppers, there’s no shortage of star power on Great Performances this month. Start the month off with Kinky Boots (Sunday, December 1 at 9pm), the Tony Award-winning high-heeled hit musical about friendship and extraordinary shoes. With songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein, follow the story of two people with seemingly nothing in common, but with a little compassion and a lot of understanding, Fembrace their differences to create an innovative (and wildly creative) business strategy. Have musical theater fever? Then catch Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 (Wednesday, December 4 at 8pm), celebrating the legendary production with a stellar cast including Alfie Boe, Nick Jonas, Lea Salonga, Colm Wilkinson, Norm Lewis and Ramin Karimloo. Next, superstar John Legend and pop star Sara Bareilles (Broadway’s Waitress) light up the stage as Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (Sunday, December 15 at 7:30pm), the 2018 Emmy Award-winning live broadcast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical. Recounting the biblical story of the final weeks of Jesus’ life, it focuses on the relationship between Jesus and his betrayer, Judas. Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon, who wowed audiences as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, plays Judas. The starry cast also includes rock legend Alice Cooper as King Herod, Norm Lewis (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess) as Caiaphas, and Ben Daniels (The Crown) as Pontius Pilate. Filmed at the Marcy Armory in Brooklyn, this live broadcast captures the spirit of the original Tony-winning 1971 production and takes it to electrifying new heights.

Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts University of Pittsburgh 2019 Committee Membership Page UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH DIETRICH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This thesis was presented by Larissa A. Irizarry 2019 iii Abstract Casting Judas: Interracial Intimacy in Jesus Christ Superstar Larissa A. Irizarry, MA University of Pittsburgh, 2019 Jesus Christ Superstar (JCS) by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first debuted as a staged musical in 1971, and was turned into a film production in 1973. In 2000 Gale Edwards and Nick Morris directed a second film adaptation. On Easter Sunday 2018, JCS, directed by David Levaux and Alex Rudzinki, was broadcasted on NBC as a live musical television special. Each of these three productions incorporates different configurations of interracial intimacy among the characters of Judas, Jesus, and Mary. These different characterizations and configurations of race construction produce differing commentaries on race and interracial relations. Despite the emergent scholarship of critical race theory in theater and film studies, there is surprisingly little literature on the configurations of interracial intimacies in JCS. In this thesis, I draw on critical race theory and gender studies to explore how race inflects representations of intimacy in JCS, focusing on the characterization of Judas across these productions.
