From the MAC, bios on the 2013 MidAmerican Conference Hall of Fame Class: DAVE KEILITZ Central Michigan (baseball): Dave Keilitz has represented Central Michigan University with success throughout his entire career. From his time as an awardwinning baseball studentathlete to his years as a coach, then administrator, and now his role within the baseball community on a national level, Keilitz has impacted the athletics landscape a local, conference and national levels. Keilitz became Central Michigan’s first AllAmerica baseball player as a senior in 1964, earning firstteam NAIA honors. Throughout his coaching career, Keilitz never had a losing season. He opened his head coaching career by leading the Chippewas to a No. 1 national ranking and into the NCAA College Division national championship game, and 28 years later led that 1971 squad into the CMU Athletics Hall of Fame. It was the first of six NCAA tournament appearances for Keilitz’s Chippewas. Keilitz was hired as Central Michigan’s athletics director in 1984, leading the Chippewas to 26 MAC championships throughout his 10 years, a span in which every coach was named MAC Coach of the Year at least once. Both during his time as coach and as athletics director, Keilitz also served on several American Baseball Coaches Association committees and was president of the organization in 1982. It was during his term that the ABCA Board of Directors was established, and he still serves as Executive Director today. Major legislation accomplishments have also taken place under his watch – bracket expansion in all divisions, change of season legislation in Division I, ball and bat standards for college play, and recruiting, practice and playing rules. Keilitz also served as a member of the NCAA Council from 198992, where he chaired the NCAA Baseball Committee, was a member of the NCAA PostGraduate Scholarship Committee, the NCAA Committee to Review Legislative Process, and served on the NCAA Television Committee. In 1992, chaired the committee to ‘Fine Tune’ Legislation from the 1991 NCAA ‘Reform’ Convention. Keilitz and his wife, Sue, have two sons, Craig and Brad. • Disability and Death Clauses in College Coaches' Contracts
Disability and Death Clauses in College Coaches’ Contracts By Martin J. Greenberg I. INTRODUCTION There is little in the literature about two clauses that have an enormous impact on the economics of college coaches’ contracts. They are the death and disability clauses. If either were to occur, subject to the dictates of the contract, it could mean a termination of the contractual obligations of the university and an end to the coaches’ income stream. If the coach dies, the contract and the obligations of the university thereunder normally terminate. Disability on the other hand is more complicated. What is the definition of disability, who determines disability, and how long is one able to be disabled before the contract terminates? These issues are not only perplexing, but need to be expressly addressed in the coaches’ contracts. The case of Terry Hoeppner (“Hoeppner”) is illustrative of the issues. Hoeppner was hired on December 17, 2004 as the head football coach at Indiana University, after having coached at Miami University in Ohio for six seasons, compiling a 48–25 record and taking the team to two consecutive bowl games in 2003 and 2004. 1 Hoeppner was hired in 2004 to rebuild Indiana’s floundering football program.2 He immediately nicknamed the Hoosiers’ home field “The Rock” and then had a limestone boulder added to Memorial Stadium to reinforce the message. 3 In two years at Indiana, he was 9–14. 4 On December 27, 2005, Hoeppner underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his right temple. 5 On September 12, 2006, he announced he would undergo a second surgery the next day 1 Terry Hoeppner: Timeline , 13WTHR Indianapolis, http://www.wthr.com/story/6679762/terry-hoeppner-timeline (last visited Jan.

Mallory Men Bullet Points To: Loyal Mallory Men From: Andy Curtin RE: Letters of Recommendation for Bill Mallory’s Candidacy for College Football Hall of Fame My name is Andy Curtin. I created and ran the Legends Poll for 10 years from 2005 through 2014. We had 23 retired coaches participate over those years. Of this group 21 are in the HOF. Bill Mallory was a charter member and served all 10 years as a voter in the Legends Poll. The roster of Legends Poll coaches is stunning in its composition. Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Frank Broyles, John Cooper, Fisher DeBerry, Bo Schembechler, Terry Donahue, Vince Dooley, Pat Dye, LaVell Edwards, Don James, Hayden Fry, John Ralston, Dick MacPherson, Don Nehlen, John Robinson, Bill Snyder, R.C. Slocum, Gene Stallings, George Welsh, Frank Kush, Bobby Ross…and Bill Mallory. Bobby Ross and Bill are the two non-HOF coaches. Everyone of our Legends Poll coaches believe Bill Mallory belongs in the HOF. However, since 2010 no coach has been granted a waiver for eligibility from the 60% winning percentage minimum rule, despite the fact that there are 31 non-60% coaches in the HOF with over 200 coaches enshrined there. I have been lobbying for Bill for over 4 years now to have the National Football Foundation reinstate the waiver procedure. I believe we have our best chance now because I have created an Index called the Curtin Coach Index (CCI) which I have provided to you herewith. It awards points to coaches for playing Top 25, Top 10 and Top 5 teams and is then averaged by years of service.
