THANKS AND YOUR WELCOME

Well, it all worked, out just wonderful. When Mel Kor- shak phoned the undersigned from Toronto and suggested that the Cincinnati Group take over the 1949 World Science Elation Convention, we accepted with quite a load of misgivings, The fact that the Cincinnati fantasy Group, on whose members the major part of the work would fall, was only a few years old, and totally inexperienced In handling such problems as would cone up, and the fact that it was not yet very widely known, In Fandom, made us have serious doubts as to our success in building the kind of convention that we thought was needed in this year of our lord 1949. But, as I say, it all worked out just wonderful. Ev erybody pitched in and helped. If I were to use three pages for this introduction, I couldn* t sufficiently thank all the people who deserve it. Advice, aid, donations and dollars for membership in the Cinvention Committee rolled in until we may now proudly say that the slogan with which we started off our publicity campaign has become sober truth. This one is going to be a honey. I would like to put in a sentence or two at this point to call your attention to the name of the organization which calls this convention. It is called the Cinvention Commit tee . Many of us have long felt that there should be a perm anent organization behind these conventions, and it was in recognition of that fact that we called this group a Commit tee rather than a League, a Society, or an Association, And now, a final paragraph, and I suspect a long one, thanking a few of those who have helped to make the conven tion what it is. First and foremost, of course, we thank the professional ipagazines, and especially the editors, Mary Gnaedinger, John Campbell, Sam I'erwin, Jr., Ray Balmer, Paul Payne and Ray Jacobsson. Our thanks here are due not only for the originals whish you see in the auction, but for the publicity which they have given us during the year. Then the book publishing houses: Fantasy Press, Shasta, Prime Press, and Gnome Preoo and others. For favorable publicity in the Cincinnati newspapers, thanks must go to James Golden of the Cincinnati Enauirer and Leo Hirtl of the Cincinnati Post. And a special mention must be made of the fact that these two resisted the temptation of treating the hobby as if it were the pastime of morons. Mel Korshak, our perennial master of the auction block must also be given his annual quota of thanks to add to his collection. And while we’re passing out the thanks, let’s not forget the many professional writ ers , editors and illustrators who are with us and who have so willingly let us put them on the programme. Last of all— thanks to you and you and you for coming. It’s a bum show that has no audience. Members of the Cinvention Committee

Glluttraied by JL ALLEN ST. JOHN

The Port of Peril is ;he third and last ol Otis Adalbert Kline's famous Venus novels. The first, The Planet at Peril (1929) is the story of how Robert Gr andon of Earth became ruler of Reabon, mightiest and most populous empire of Venus. The Prine® of Peril (1930} portrays the adventures of Harry Thorne who became Zinlo o[ Olfca. The Pori of Peril continues the tantas+ic adventures cf Robert Grandon as he en counters the Huitsenni, a weird, buccaneering race who prey upon all -nations of Venus alike, and who attack only in overwhelming numbers so as to insure victory and to prevent pursuit. When these strange beings abduct Grandads bride, the latter realizes that he must conduct a campaigii for their extermination. And out of this comes a tale of action, in which event follows event at unparaHed speed, and always against n bnckgrcund at the most fantastic creatures and horrible men. Hie story originally ran as a long magazine serial in 1932 under the title of 'The Buccaneers of Venus'1. As such i: has been much sought after as a hidden classic of science fiction and fantastic adventure. Its keynote is a tine binding and lour de lightful interior illustrations and u dust wrapper by ], Allen St. John, incomparable artist of the fantastic genre. IMMEDIATE DELIVERY *3.00
