AFL MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

It has been another successful AFL Sydney season and congratulations must be extended to P W L D % Pts all players, coaches, officials, umpires, volunteers and supporters.

Collingwood 22 20 2 0 167.7 80 Australian football in Sydney is on the rise and all AFL Sydney clubs have been encourag- Geelong 22 19 3 0 157.4 76 ingly accommodating for the wave of new participants wanting to play our great game.

Hawthorn 22 18 4 0 144.1 72 This year, we saw seven new teams enter the competition, which saw the need for a Divi- sion Five competition or the first time, while 19 under-18 teams competed for the respective West Coast 22 17 5 0 130.3 68 trophies.

Carlton 22 14 7 1 130.9 58 The premier division competition also grew to 11 teams after the UTS Bats were rewarded St Kilda 22 12 9 1 112.8 50 for their consistency, being elevated to the top grade and today, Balmain will East Coast for the Premier Division Premiership. 22 12 9 1 109.3 50 On the representative front, in one of the highlights of the year, AFL Sydney played the GWS GIANTS in their first ever Essendon 22 11 10 1 100.0 46 AFL match. A great experience for our players to test themselves against the best footballers from around the country.

North 22 10 12 0 101.2 40 As a result of the match and the competitive performance by AFL Sydney we saw an opportunity for Tim Barton and Rohan Bates to play with the club during the NAB Cup/Challenge series. No doubt, an experience they‘ll never forget. 22 9 13 0 95.6 36

Fremantle 22 9 13 0 83.1 36 Mid season, the AFL Sydney representative side headed north to take on AFL Cairns. On the same June long weekend, Richmond 22 8 13 1 86.4 34 the AFL Sydney Development squad played AFL Riverina in Newcastle. Representative football continues to blossom and is an integral part of the competition. Melbourne 22 8 13 1 85.3 34 We make no apologies for our ambition to elevate the standard of state level AFL in Sydney and we are excited that 22 7 15 0 79.4 28 Sydney University and East Coast Eagles have been accepted into the North East Australian Football League. To have Brisbane 22 4 18 0 81.0 16 AFL Sydney representation in a bone fide national second tier competition is extremely important for our growth and we can now offer a standard of football that will attract, and just as importantly, retain the best young talent in Sydney. Despite the result, Wright said the club is in the perfect position for the future with a number of long-term injured players expected to return for pre-season training.

"Talking around the track a lot of our injured players will be 100 percent ready to go next year. Hopefully with that experience back and building on the youth we produced this year … Penno will hopefully turnaround next year and make the Grand Final."

Wright himself is one player who is recovering well from his injury but still has another three months of rehabilitation to go.

2011 ARMSTRONG MEDAL—CARTER MULLINS CLUB NOTES East Coast Eagles congratulate all teams MANLY-WARRINGAH CARTER MULLINS MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY 22 It has been a big final series for the Wolves with 3 teams making it into the Grand Final. Unfortunately both the Division 5 NATHAN MCLEAN HOLROYD-PARRAMATTA 14 and U18 teams went down last Saturday, but both sides put in hard fought efforts against teams that had been undefeated throughout the year. Division 5 were in the match against Southern Power and if it wasn't for some inaccurate kicking in VICTOR PHAM MOOREBANK 12 front of goal they could have held the lead going into the last quarter. However, it was a great for the boys to get to the Grand Final and be so competitive, especially considering that 8 players had never played AFL before this year. It is hard to JOSHUA MARTIN UNSW/ES 9 pick out best players as the whole team played with great spirit, but special mention must go to JMac and Charlie who both played exceptional games. NATHAN ROWLEY PENRITH 8 The U18's met a formidable Campbelltown combination but were able to keep in tact with them and with only minutes to go in the third quarter the young Wolves were still only 1 goal in arrears. It wasn't until the last quarter that the taller, older and MARK JACKSON PENRITH 8 stronger Campbelltown were able to take the lead. It was a great year for the young Wolves and they gave the Grand Final MICHAEL GRAY NOR-WEST 8 a real crack. Walt Koch and Cal Johnston stood out but everybody played their part. Now this saturday is the week that we have all been waiting for, to see the Wolves run out in the Division one Grand Final. It CHRISTIAN TRIFFITT PENRITH 7 is a re-match of the second semi final against Southern Power, and if that match is anything to go on it will a closely fought contest, as it wasn't until the last quarter that the Wolves were able to take control of that game. On the big spaces at Black- LUKE MANSBRIDGE HOLROYD-PARRAMATTA 6 town it will be up to mid fielders to continually drive the ball forward to give our forwards the best chance. The backs will have to remain tight like they did 2 weeks ago. All in all it should be a cracker of a game and hopefully the Wolves will get TAYT CORLESS PENRITH 6 the chance to hold up the Cup. Special thanks to our major sponsor the Hotel Steyne and support sponsors the Bendigo Bank (Freshwater Community Bank) and Bray's IGA Allambie Heights and Collaroy for their support throughout the year, and remember to get back to the Steyne tonight to help celebrate the teams performance. 2011 APTED MEDAL—DANIEL BALDERSTON Go Wolves!!! DANIEL BALDERSTON MOOREBANK 18 DANIEL STANTON SOUTHERN POWER 16 SYDNEY UNIVERSITY MARK KAVANAGH SAINTS A.F.C 10 Congratulations and good luck to the rampaging ―Reds‖ who will battle for the Division Three flag today. They will do us proud against UNSWES and hopefully finish 2011 off on a winning note! ANDREW KENT MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY 9 They got there the hard way, fighting back from inaccurate kicking early and a 9 point three quarter time deficit that was as much as 22 points part way through the third. Inspirational tackling pressure, more decisive movement to goal and some solid defensive play across half back made all the difference. In the wash-up Barnes, Kennedy and Younan were named RYAN FORNASARI SOUTHERN POWER 8 best and Herring kicked two important goals in very much a team performance. A year of tragedy and triumph, a year where the roller-coaster of emotion has swung up and down. Our Premier Division team performed above expectation this season, finishing in fourth CAMERON GORDON CAMPBELLTOWN 9 place, one spot better than last year. There‘s been plenty of highlights along the way. Who will ever forget the heroics of the match-winning goal in Wollongong with just seconds to go? Or the cracking win in the mud at Sydney Uni. Or Danny Rob- erts‘ bag of 11 at Campbelltown and that amazing demolition job in the last quarter against Wests at Gore Hill. And we‘re seeing some great new talent rising through the ranks. Rory Pryor, after starting the season in the Under 18s, has 2011 HOWARTH TROPHY—JON VLATKO cemented a senior spot; and even a few call-ups to the Swans reserves and the opportunity to take on Israel Folau. Pat Codling has become a regular in the senior team, while Lachlan Kilpatrick has also gone a long way to establishing himself. Our First Division side was unable to repeat last year‘s finals appearance, but did experience some success during the Representative Player of the Year season. Our Under 18s continues to be a great nursery of footballing talent. Our young Bombers were afflicted by a horren- dous injury toll this season, but fought gamely against the odds to qualify for the finals and went within a kick of knocking off Pennant Hills in their first final. There‘s some terrific young footballers in our Under 18s side, and we‘re hoping they‘ll have long and successful careers for North Shore moving forward. For the first time this season we fielded a third senior team. Third Division was a tough ask for our new side, many of whom had never played the game before. But although they were only able to win one game, and will drop down to Fourth Division next season, morale remained high within the team and we look forward to their ongoing contribution to the North Shore club in 2012 and beyond. Off the field we had some notable moments. The Back to Bears Day was a highlight, when we celebrated the anniversary of our 1961, 1991 and 2001 premierships. We‘ll be looking to build on the momentum created that day to strengthen the links to our proud history and turn our successful yesterday into an even more successful tomor- row. We thank our sponsors – Norths Leagues, WB Financial, Prime Constructions and the Bridgeview Hotel. We thank all who played and coached for the club this year. And to our volunteers, who did so much behind the scenes to make our football club possible. Enjoy the off-season; and here‘s looking forward with keen anticipation to 2012.

The Bulldogs Coach said mateship was the key to their success to date. ―I have had the great fortune to coach most of them for three or four years and I love the way they play for each other,‖ Fewings said. ―This year, after overcoming player losses in the upper grades last season, we‘ve managed to re-form the player group and introduce new players to the values that won us the Third Division premiership two years ago. ―I particularly want to pay tribute to David Backler who has a passion for the game like no one else. ―While in his 40‘s, he‘s captained a premiership team, won and finished runner-up in the McFarlane medal and won the side‘s best and fairest...that‘s an outstanding effort in anyone‘s book,‖ Fewings said. The Bulldogs would also like to thank those players who missed out on a Grand Final berth. ―You don‘t get to a Grand Final with just 22 players and the starting team is fully aware of the courage and commitment shown by their teammates,‖ Fewings added. ―Wherever we go, we go together.‖ We would like to thank our sponsors, The Doncaster Hotel, Total Work Wear, Nicholas Haywood Jewellery Concierge, A W Edwards Plumbing, Randwick Dental and Kensington Physiotherapy,

BALMAIN DOCKERS —NIC FOSDIKE EAST COAST EAGLES—GLEN GARNER

How do you assess the season thus far? How do you sum up the season so far?

I suppose when you get to the Grand Final, it‘s been a good year. We‘ve had some ups and downs and we‘ve We‘ve given ourselves an opportunity but for us to continue to improve we have to get there and win so our first probably been a little bit frustrating during the year because we‘ve taken a long time to get going at times. Last year focus was to get there so on those terms, we‘ve ticked the boxes so far. we had quite a few injuries so we‘ve got some new guys and those who have come back from injury so it‘s taken a while for the team to gel together. Even though we‘ve managed to win most of our games we haven‘t won a lot of Do you feel the club’s at an advantage having won the grand final the last two years? them the way we would have liked. All of that is behind us now though. The boys have done a fantastic job in the finals to beat Sydney Uni who are a really good side, they‘re well coached, they‘re fit and they‘re enthusiastic so to I think the experience will hold us in good stead but whether it will give us an advantage on game-day [who knows]. beat them twice we‘re really happy. I didn‘t know if we had that in us but we managed to do it. We lost to East You‘ve got to do the same things on the day in the years previous so from an experience perspective it does but it Coast [in the finals as well] in a pretty tough game. They‘ve beaten us a couple of times now so we‘re up against it doesn‘t give you an advantage in any other area. this weekend. What will this experience mean for the younger players on your list? Coming into the season the club had won 15 games in the past five years, did you think you would be in the position to win the club’s first flag since 1998? For those young guys it‘s a great experience. We talk about it all the time and they do as a group as well that to be a good player you have to test yourself in finals footy and in grand finals so those guys get to test themselves and We did a lot of work in the off-season on recruiting. We did have a pretty good team last year but we just had a see how they go under the pressure of a grand final. Individually, win, lose or draw, there will be great benefits for shocking run with injuries. We weren‘t going to be in the top two or three teams but we could have been in the top the younger players. four. We did a lot of work in the off-season in getting a few new players at the club that we needed. We needed some particular players and we hunted around for those players and did our best to get them. I was pretty confident What players have impressed this year? at the start of the year that we can be a strong side but when you look at that kind of stat you think geez we‘ve come a long way. For us, I think it was just a matter of keeping all of our players from last year and adding a few on Jack Dimery (pictured middle) has had a very good year who was part of the AFL NSW/ACT Talented Player Pro- top and getting them fit. gram and on scholarship with Geelong, he‘s come a long way. Michael Johnston (pictured bottom right), who had a Hawthorn Scholarship, has also run into some really good form at the right end of the year. How valuable is this experience for the number of younger players you’ve unearthed this year? Where do you think the game will be won? We‘ve had some great young players this year – James Howard, Matt Edwins, Chris Bolt (pictured right) and Alex Mitchell – and they‘re all 18, 19, 20 years of age. We‘ve also got some older guys and that‘s just the way we‘re It can be won and lost everywhere but in finals footy you don‘t come up against anyone who is not good. If you win made up. We‘ve got a good balance between old and young. The young guys have been fantastic and they‘re the it around the midfield and give your forwards first use of the football that will generally be where the game will be ones who are enthusiastic, they‘re always fit and they never get injured. You need those guys because the older won or lost. guys tend to pull up a bit sore and get a bit slower as the year goes on. Next year the Eagles will be entering NEAFL, how important is it to go into the new competition having won As a player with the Sydney Swans, you were involved in and prepared yourself for an AFL Grand Final the premiership? (which you helped the club win in 2005). How do you prepare the whole team this time as player/coach of the Balmain Dockers? In the context of what it will do for us in the NEAFL, probably not a great deal. Our performance in the NEAFL certainly won‘t be affected win, lose or draw but for the players who will go up and play in the NEAFL that finals One of my big things for coaching the boys this year was I just wanted them to experience being a team that wins. experience is invaluable. When they realise success and know what it‘s like it becomes a driving force. No matter For some of the guys who haven‘t won a lot of footy over the last few years, I wanted them to be part of a team that what level they play at they will want to have a crack at that success. wins some games and hopefully plays in and wins some finals. I‘m just happy that they‘re getting to experience finals games now. It was good to run out last weekend because there were a few people there, there was a bit of an atmosphere and some fans cheering so it‘s great for the guys to experience that. I think this week it‘s important that all the players enjoy the occasion so I‘ll make them realise that it‘s an exciting time and to enjoy being part of a Grand Final. So it‘s just about enjoying the occasion and going out there and doing our best and if we get beaten we get beaten and if we win we win. Either way I hope the guys enjoy the experience and I‘m glad they aren‘t playing in a team that is getting beaten more often than not, finally they‘re in a team that‘s had some success.
