The Hunger Games & A Dystopian World Miss Z, English 3 FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel. “The Lo2ery” is a dystopian story Dystopia: A futuris8c, imagined world, characterized by an oppressed society and a controlling ruling force (a government, the big businesses, a technologically superior group). No such thing as freedom (speech, press, religion, belief…). The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?! Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a cri8cism about the current trend, societal norm, or poli8cal system. Ø “The Lo2ery” was wri2en in 1948, aer WW II.
