Augmented reality is a technology that projects digital images onto real environments, often with the use of a mobile device or tablet. Think Pokemon Go, but for patient care. Here are two tools that could be a part of your next doctor visit! Do you wear glasses or contact lenses?

Imagine being able to describe changes to your vision more accurately. An augmented reality app called Eye Decide uses images and animation to educate patients about different eye conditions, such as conjunctivitis, or “pink eye,” and glaucoma, a buildup of pressure in and around the eye. By downloading Eye Decide to your mobile device, you can have a more detailed conversation with your optometrist and potentially get your vision problems treated with greater success. Have you ever had blood drawn or needed IV fluids?

Imagine if nurses could find your veins easier and faster, with just one prick? An augmented reality device called AccuVein makes guiding needles into veins easier by detecting where a patient’s veins are and projecting a map of them along the skin.

While Eye Decide and AccuVein are already available to patients and professionals, there are many other augmented reality devices in the works that will hopefully become mainstream soon! Meanwhile, we, as patients, have more access than ever before to medical information and should remain eager to learn about new developments in the healthcare industry as they arise.
