The Eldorado National Forest is planning to fill a Student Trainee (Administrative Support Assistant)—Indefinite Intern. This position is located at the Work Center in Placerville, CA. This position will be open 18 to 22 November 2013 during the Fall Pathways Hiring Cycle. To be eligible for conversion to the competitive service, an Intern must:

• Be a U.S. citizen. • Successfully complete academic course of study. • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Internship Program. • Meet the OPM Qualification Standard for the position the Intern may be converted to. • Maintain acceptable performance under the agency’s approved performance management system. • Receive favorable recommendation for conversion from supervisor.

MAJOR DUTIES

Receives training in the principles, concepts, work processes, and regulations of one or more functional areas of Administrative, Clerical, and Office Services. Work assignments are usually clear-cut and designed to provide experience in a variety of activities. Page 1 of 4

On a scheduled basis, following the training plan, the incumbent may rotate among the various Administrative, Clerical, and Office Services groups to gain an understanding of the various program concepts and operations, develop an understanding of the total mission as well as organizational/functional interrelationships and develop a foundation for more specialized application of knowledge gained from on-the-job training assignments.

Receives formal and on-the-job training in Department of Agriculture, and Forest Service policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. Instructed on use of personal computers, file, and data management. .

ELDORADO NATIONAL FOREST

The Eldorado National Forest is recognized as a desirable place to work. Elevations range from 2000 ft in the foothills to more than 10,000 along the Sierra Crest. A Mediterranean climate extends over most of the Forest, with warm, dry summers, and cold, wet winters. Average precipitation ranges from 40 to 70 inches, occurring mainly from October to April. There is significant snowfall above 3000 feet elevation.

The Forest and surrounding communities offer a wide variety of recreational activities. There are lakes, reservoirs, several cross-country and downhill ski areas, two unique wilderness areas, over 40 developed campgrounds, several resort areas, golf courses, and outstanding local wineries and fruit orchards. Opportunities abound for water skiing, white water sports (Class II to Class V), mountain biking, OHV travel, rock climbing, fishing, hunting and hiking. Local community theatres offer stage plays and a variety of musical entertainment. Although El Dorado County makes up the largest segment of the Forest, portions of Alpine, Amador, and Placer counties lie within the Forest Boundary. In close proximity to the forest are the communities of South and Sacramento, which offer additional recreational and cultural activities including professional and semi-professional sports.

Rental houses and apartments generally range from $1000-$1600 per month. Purchase prices for 2-3 bedroom homes range from $175,000 to $450,000+. Land and/or lots are available as well.

Community colleges in the area include Folsom Lake College (El Dorado Center in Placerville), Sierra College In Rocklin, College and Sacramento City College in Sacramento and Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe. Marshall Hospital, located in Placerville, is the closest well-equipped medical center. There are many local doctor and dentist offices in Placerville. There are several major hospitals in the Sacramento area including Kaiser Hospitals in Sacramento and Roseville.
