A taste of YA Introducing young adult literature in the EFL classroom LUCIA XARANZANA GONZALEZ MANCHADO Master’s Thesis Master’s degree in Teaching Training (MFPR) (With a speciality/Itinerary English and German) at the UNIVERSITAT DE LES ILLES BALEARS Academic year 2017/2018 Date 04/06/2018 UIB Master’s Thesis Supervisor Alicia Coe Jorgensen Abstract Although there have been instances in which literature has been part of English as a Foreign Language lessons, it is not a common phenomenon. Young adult literature in particular is a popular genre among readers, but not in the educational system. This paper aims to introduce this literary genre into the English as a Foreign Language classroom through a project based on three celebrated novels, chosen for both their contents and for what they may contribute to students educationally and personally. This paper can be divided into three parts. The first one is a brief examination of how literature and young adult literature have been used in EFL classrooms and the benefits they can have in students. The second part presents the three novels and the authors chosen: Turtles All the Way Down by John Green, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. Finally, the third and last part involves the nine lesson plans that compose the project and the worksheets that can be found in the annex. In fact, American society only recognized two defined stages of development, childhood and adulthood, with the point of transition between the two being the entrance of a child into the workforce, therefore entering adulthood (Cart 3-4). Then where did the terms come from, and how did they obtain such prominence in the past hundred years? According to Michael Cart, The Great Depression played a role in the emergence of “youth culture,” in part due to the large increase of young individuals’ high school attendance (5). -

Jiří Šalamoun, Ph.D. Author: Lucie Kopřivová Anotace Práce je zaměřená na sexuální identitu a takzvaný “coming-outu” u mladých lidí. Změřuje se zejména na postavy vyobrazené v knihách “Probuzení Simona Spiera” a “Dej mi své jmeno”. Zjistíme take vice o coming outu jako takovém a o některých aspektech života LGBTQ+ komunity. Hlavní otázkou práce ja jek se liší prožití toho, když hrdina projde coming outem a když to o něm zjistí ostatní a jak to změní jejich život. Abstract The focus of the thesis is the sexual identity and so called coming out amongst queer youth, specifically as it is depicted in the novels “Simon vs. The Homosapiens Agenda” and “Call Me by Your Name”. The thesis will also cover the basic principles of coming out and some aspects of life as a LGBTQ+ member. The underlining question we are trying to answer is. How does the experience of being discovered or coming out as queer in the two novels differ and how does it change the life of the protagonist.
