All the clubs and administrations have all embraced the three umpire system. Not only has it enabled more opportunities within the VSHL-SUA group but it has improved the flow of the game. This is evident in the low free kick count. While the matches have had three umpires in Finals for a few years now, no other League has consistently had three field umpires at 12 out of 15 games every week. Peter Marshall believes that our style of umpiring has re- sulted in a free flowing and less clinical approach. As a result the relationship with clubs and the league has grown closer and there is an increased willingness to work together.

Ian (FIZZ) JaCKSOn - Wedderburn Umpire

Ian ‘Fizz’ Jackson played the game hard but tempered his fiery approach when he turned to umpiring. In 1974 he started a 28 year umpiring stint that saw him officiate in 560 games and 20 grand finals. Ian says proudly that he never reported a player in his umpiring career “I’d rather give a 50 metre penalty or talk to them than report them”. WorkSafe is proud to sponsor country football. For the players, the families, friends, even the umpires! That’s why WorkSafe wants to remind everyone in country Victoria how important it is to have a safe workplace. That way all of us can turn up to the footy on the weekend to see our country football legends.
