Basketry MB (9:00, 10:00, or 2:20) Audience: Youth

Basketry is a handy skill for a Scout. A basket can be a sturdy companion on campouts, carrying clothes snugly and efficiently, holding potatoes and corn for roasting over a campfire, or carrying the day's fishing catch back to camp for dinner. Scouts are often called upon to help because they know first aid and they know about the discipline and planning needed to react to an emergency situation. Earning this merit badge helps a Scout to be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during, and after an emergency. Sessions Prerequisites

Prerequisites Earn the First Aid Merit Badge. 1 The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from a unit leader verifying his completion of this requirement. All Scouts must have earned this merit badge prior to beginning Emergency Preparedness in camp. Make a chart that demonstrates your understanding of each of the aspects of emergency preparedness in requirement 2a (prepare, respond, recover, mitigate) with regard to 10 of the situations listed below. You must use situations 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 below in boldface, but you may choose any other five listed here for a total of 10 situations. Discuss this chart with your counselor.

Enviro. Science MB (9:00 or 10:30) Audience: Youth

While earning the Environmental Science merit badge, Scouts will get a taste of what it is like to be an environmental scientist, making observations and carrying out experiments to investigate the natural world. Sessions Prerequisites In Requirement 3, if you choose e of f it should be done before camp. 3(e) Endangered Species (1) Do research on one endangered species found in your state. Find out what its natural habitat is, why it is endangered, what is being done to preserve it, and how many individual organisms are left in the wild. Prepare a 100-word report about the organism, including a drawing. Present your report to your patrol or troop. (2) Do research on one species that was endangered or threatened but that has now recovered. Find out how the organism recovered, and what its new status is. Write a 100-word report on the species and discuss it with your counselor. (3) With your parent’s and counselor’s approval, work with a natural resource professional to identify two projects that have been approved to improve the habitat for a threatened or endangered species in your area. Visit the site of one of these projects and report on what you saw. 3(f) Pollution Prevention, Resource Recovery, and Conservation (1) Look around your home and determine 10 ways your family can help reduce pollution. Practice at least two of these methods for seven days and discuss with your counselor what you have learned. (2) Determine 10 ways to conserve resources or use resources more efficiently in your home, at school, or at camp. Practice at least two of these methods for seven days and discuss with your counselor what you have learned. (3) Perform an experiment on packaging materials to find out which ones are biodegradable. Fire Safety MB (10:00) Audience: Youth

The ability to use fire safely is essential to human survival. By earning this merit badge, Scouts will learn to uses fire safely and responsibly, how to prevent home fires, and how to handle fire safely, as well as burn prevention, and camping safety. Sessions Prerequisites

F.R.O.G. (9:00) Audience: Youth Fundamental Requirements and Outdoor Growth F.R.O.G. is a program designed specifically for the younger Scout who has not been to summer camp before. The purpose of the program is to help young Scouts make a smooth transition to camp life. Sometimes the idea of taking a merit badge and being at camp for the first time seems a little daunting to the new Scout. The idea of F.R.O.G. is to teach this Scout the skills to function in the camp environment.

When Participating in FROG, Scouts will tackle fundamental requirements of Scouting and explore different program areas in camp where they will be introduced to the program.

The F.R.O.G. Staff will ensure that the Scouts are exposed to the skills necessary to complete 10 parts of a rank to qualify for Pipestone. This instruction may cover such topics as knife and axe use, fire building, knot tying, plant identification, hiking, citizenship, physical fitness, first aid and the patrol method. Additionally, participating Scouts will earn the Fingerprinting Merit Badge as part of the curriculum.

A daily record will be posted at the dining hall to keep leaders up to date on their Scouts’ progress. The FROG staff will not pass Scouts on any requirements, instead they will keep track of what instruction the Scout was presented. It is up to the unit leader to decide if the Scout has an acceptable knowledge of each skill.

Frog participants will also have the opportunity to work on the Scouting Heritage Merit Badge during their time in this area. Prerequisites

Geocaching MB (11:00 or 2:20) Audience: Youth

Geocaching describes a hiding place on planet Earth - a hiding place you can find using a GPS unit. A GPS (Global Positioning System) unit is an electronic tool that shows you where to go based on information it gets from satellites in space.

Share the posted information about three of those geocaches with your 7 counselor. Then, pick one of the three and find the cache. To learn about these different groups is to take an exciting journey of discovery in which you will meet some of America's most fascinating peoples.

Leatherwork MB (9, 10 or 11) Audience: Youth

Scouts who complete the requirements to earn the Leatherwork merit badge will explore leather's history and its endless uses. They will learn to make a useful leather item using the same types of raw materials that our ancestors used; be challenged to master skills like hand-stitching, lacing, and braiding.; and learn how to preserve and protect leather items so they will last a lifetime and beyond. Lifesaving (9:00)

No Boy Scout will ignore a plea for help. However, the desire to help is of little use unless one knows how to give the proper aid. The main purpose of the Lifesaving merit badge is to prepare Scouts to assist those involved in water accidents, teaching them the basic knowledge of rescue techniques, the skills to perform them, and the judgment to know when and how to act so that they can be prepared for emergencies. Music (2:20) Audience: Youth

 I will be teaching this Merit Badge because I’m a Music Education Major with a concentration in Clarinet Performance.  Scouts will get to experience all types of music throughout there week at camp, from classical to pop to jazz they will get to experience all the different highlights of music.  A huge part of music is learning Music Theory and writing a piece of music. Each scout will learn the basics and write a 5-measure piece of music by the end of the week.  Scouts will have the option of brining instruments to camp, but I highly recommend that they don’t; I will have a wide arrangement of instruments brought to camp.  Scouts will learn how to lead different scout songs within their units.  They will also learn the science of how tone is generated out of instruments and with their voice.

Prerequisites 3. Do TWO of the following: (a) Attend a live performance, or listen to three hours of recordings from any two of the following musical styles: blues, jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, ethnic, gospel, musical theater, opera. Describe the sound of the music and the instruments used. Identify the composers or songwriters, the performers, and the titles of the pieces you heard. If it was a live performance, describe the setting and the reaction of the audience. Discuss your thoughts about the music. (b) Interview an adult member of your family about music. Find out what the most popular music was when he or she was your age. Find out what his or her favorite music is now, and listen to three of your relative's favorite tunes with him or her. How do those favorites sound to you? Had you ever heard any of them? Play three of your favorite songs for your relative, and explain why you like these songs. Ask what he or she thinks of your favorite music. (c) Serve for six months as a member of a school band, choir, or other organized musical group, or perform as a soloist in public six times. (d) List five people who are important in the history of American music and explain to your counselor why they continue to be influential. Include at least one composer, one performer, one innovator, and one person born more than 100 years ago.

Nature MB (9:00) Audience: Youth

There is a very close connection between the soil, the plants, and all animal life, including people. Understanding this connection, and the impact we have upon it, is important to preserving the wilderness, as well as to our own well-being as members of the web of nature. Sessions

Oceanography (10:00) Audience: Youth

 We are bringing the ocean to a scout camp in Ohio! Scouts will get the opportunity to learn about the wonderful world of ocean life.  They will learn about the wildlife of ocean to how the ocean water is chemically formed.  They will have the chance to make models of how sediments move around in water when waves are hitting the beaches.  This merit badge will be a lot of in class lectures and experiments that will keep the scouts engaged through the whole class. Pioneering MB (9:00) Audience: Youth

Pioneering—the knowledge of ropes, knots, and splices along with the ability to build rustic structures by lashing together poles and spars—is among the oldest of Scouting's skills. Practicing rope use and completing projects with lashings also allow Scouts to connect with past generations, ancestors who used many of these skills as they sailed the open seas and lived in America's forests and prairies. Plant Science (9:00) Audience: Youth

 Scouts will get the experience of discovering more about the plant life, how they grow and thrive in nature.  Scouts will learn how to grow plants by seeds and hopefully have sprouts by the end of the week. (Could also be a Pre-Req)  Scouts will learn how different things will affect plants growth throughout the environment.  They will get to experience and discover the many fields of study in Plant Science.  Scouts will participate in Option 3: Field Botany in their week at camp.  There will be many plant hikes in this class! They will be walking over camp documenting the different wildlife and plant life that lives in our beautiful camp.  This merit badge is limited on classroom learning and homework.

Prerequisites 5. Tell how to propagate plants by seeds, roots, cuttings, tubers, and grafting. Grow a plant by ONE of these methods. Please provide a picture of the plant you grew for this requirement

Public Health (2:20) Audience: Youth

 This merit badge will be for older scouts, just because of some information they must learn. The merit badge will be for 14-17-year-old scouts.  Scouts will get to learn about diseases that they will see every day. They will learn the history, how to prevent it and how to cure it.  Scouts will discuss and learn how to treat unclean water and they will also talk about the different diseases that can be transmitted through dirty water.  Scouts will have the chance to tour the kitchen of the dining hall and talk to the dining hall manger about all the precautions they take in the dining hall with food prep.  This will give scouts a chance to explore the career of public health! Prerequisites 7. With your parent's and counselor's approval: Do ONE of the following: (a) Visit your city, county, or state public health agency. (b) Familiarize yourself with your city, county, or state health agency's website. After completing either 7a or 7b, do the following: (i) Compare the four leading causes of mortality (death) in your community for any of the past five years with the four leading causes of disease in your community. Explain how the public health agency you visited is trying to reduce the mortality and morbidity rates of these leading causes of illness and death. (ii) Explain the role of your health agency as it relates to the outbreak of diseases. (iii) Discuss the kinds of public assistance the agency is able to provide in case of disasters such as floods, storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, and other acts of destruction. Your discussion can include the cleanup necessary after the disaster.

Pulp & Paper (9:00) Audience: Youth

 Scouts will learn how tree farms operate on the regular basis.  They will learn how paper is recycled and how it is made.  Scouts will have the opportunity to make their own paper by scraps of recycled paper.  This is a career that many scouts might not get a chance to experience in the real world. This will get them inspired to recycle paper or even pursue a job in recycling or paper making. Prerequisites 7. With your parent's and counselor's approval, do ONE of the following: (a) Visit a pulp mill. Describe how the mill converts wood to cellulose fibers. (b) Visit a paper mill and get a sample of the paper made there. Describe the processes used for making this paper. Tell how it will be used. (c) Visit a container plant or box plant. Describe how the plant's products are made. (d) Visit a recycled paper collection or sorting facility. Describe the operations there. (e) Using books, magazines, your local library, the Internet (with your parent's permission), and any other suitable research tool, find out how paper products are developed. Find out what role research and development play in the papermaking industry. Share what you learn with your counselor.

Reptile & Amphibian Study MB (11:00) Audience: Youth

Boys always have been interested in snakes, turtles, lizards, and alligators, as well as frogs and salamanders. Developing knowledge about these captivating creatures leads to an appreciation for all native wildlife; understanding the life cycle of a reptile or amphibian and keeping one as a pet can be a good introduction to natural history; and knowing about venomous species can help Scouts to be prepared to help in case of an emergency. Prerequisites

Prerequisite Do ONE of the following:

a. Maintain one or more reptiles or amphibians for at least a month. Record food accepted, eating methods, changes in coloration, shedding of skins, and general habits; or keep the eggs of a reptile from the time of laying until hatching; or keep the eggs of an amphibian from the time of laying until their transformation into tadpoles (frogs) or larvae (salamanders). b. Choose a reptile or amphibian that you can observe at a local zoo, aquarium, nature center, or 8 other such exhibit (such as your classroom or school). Study the specimen weekly for a period of three months. At each visit, sketch the specimen in its captive habitat and note any changes in its coloration, shedding of skins and general habits and behavior. Find out, either from information you locate on your own or by talking to the caretaker, what this species eats and what are its native habitat and home range, preferred climate, average life expectancy, and natural predators. Also identify any human caused threats to its population and any laws that protect the species and its habitat. After the observation period, share what you have learned with your counselor. The Scout needs to: Bring a photograph of the reptile or amphibian along with appropriate record keeping depending on if a or b is chosen.
