Prerequisites Art MB (2:20) Audience: Youth This merit badge concentrates on two-dimensional art, specifically drawing and painting in various media, including an introduction to design applications in the fields of graphic arts and industrial design, history and design principles, and how these fields relate to fine art. Prerequisites Prerequisite With your parent's permission and your counselor's approval, visit a museum, art exhibit, art gallery, artists' co-op, or artists' workshop. Find out about the art displayed or created there. Discuss what you 6 learn with your counselor. The Scout needs to: Bring a photo of himself in front of the museum/art exhibit and bring a one (1) page report about the experience. Basketry MB (9:00, 10:00, or 2:20) Audience: Youth Basketry is a handy skill for a Scout. A basket can be a sturdy companion on campouts, carrying clothes snugly and efficiently, holding potatoes and corn for roasting over a campfire, or carrying the day's fishing catch back to camp for dinner. Baskets and basket-weaving projects also make great gifts for family and friends. Kits ranging from $7.00 to $9.00 are available at the Trading Post. Many are beautifully colored. Others are accomplished singers. Many of the most important discoveries about birds and how they live have been made by amateur birders. In pursuing this hobby, a Scout might someday make a valuable contribution to our understanding of the natural world. Sessions Capacity: 30 Registered: 2 Prerequisites 9. Do ONE of the following. For the option you choose, describe what birds you hope to attract, and why. (a) Build a bird feeder and put it in an appropriate place in your yard or another location. (b) Build a birdbath and put it in an appropriate place. (c) Build a backyard sanctuary for birds by planting trees and shrubs for food and cover. Electronics MB (9:00) Audience: Youth Electronics is the science that controls the behavior of electrons so that some type of useful function is performed. Today, electronics is a fast-changing and exciting field. Prerequisites Kit available online at http://www.buckeyecouncil.org/Camping/ScoutsBSASummerCamp/PreCampSale/ Emerg. Prep. MB (9:00 or 2:20) Audience: Youth Scouts are often called upon to help because they know first aid and they know about the discipline and planning needed to react to an emergency situation. Earning this merit badge helps a Scout to be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during, and after an emergency. Sessions Prerequisites Prerequisites Earn the First Aid Merit Badge. 1 The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from a unit leader verifying his completion of this requirement. All Scouts must have earned this merit badge prior to beginning Emergency Preparedness in camp. Make a chart that demonstrates your understanding of each of the aspects of emergency preparedness in requirement 2a (prepare, respond, recover, mitigate) with regard to 10 of the situations listed below. You must use situations 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 below in boldface, but you may choose any other five listed here for a total of 10 situations. Discuss this chart with your counselor. 1. Home kitchen fire 2. Home basement/storage room/garage fire 3. Explosion in the home 4. Automobile crash 5. Food-borne disease (food poisoning) 6. Fire or explosion in a public place 2b 7. Vehicle stalled in the desert 8. Vehicle trapped in a blizzard 9. Flash flooding in town or the country 10. Mountain/backcountry accident 11. Boating or water accident 12. Gas leak in a home or building 13. Tornado or hurricane 14. Major flood 15. Nuclear power plant emergency 16. Avalanche (snow slide or rockslide) 17. Violence in a public place The Scout needs to: Bring his completed chart to camp and be prepared to discuss it. Meet with and teach your family how to get or build a kit, make a plan, and 2c be informed for the situations on the chart you created for requirement 2b. Complete a family plan. Then meet with your counselor and report on your family meeting, discuss their responses, and share your family plan. The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from parent/guardian verifying completion of the requirement. Take part in an emergency service project, either a real one or a practice drill, with a Scouting unit or a community agency. 7a The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from unit leader verifying completion of service project. NOTE: The weekly Monday emergency drill at camp DOES NOT count for completion of this requirement. Prepare a personal emergency service pack for a mobilization call. Prepare a family kit (suitcase or waterproof box) for use by your family in 8b case an emergency evacuation is needed. Explain the needs and uses of the contents. The Scout needs to: Bring photographic documentation of kit. 6 Do the following: 6 (c) Find out who is your community's emergency management director and learn what this person does to prevent, protect, mitigate, respond to, and recover from emergency situations in your community. Discuss this information with your counselor, utilizing the information you learned from requirement 2b Enviro. Science MB (9:00 or 10:30) Audience: Youth While earning the Environmental Science merit badge, Scouts will get a taste of what it is like to be an environmental scientist, making observations and carrying out experiments to investigate the natural world. Sessions Prerequisites In Requirement 3, if you choose e of f it should be done before camp. 3(e) Endangered Species (1) Do research on one endangered species found in your state. Find out what its natural habitat is, why it is endangered, what is being done to preserve it, and how many individual organisms are left in the wild. Prepare a 100-word report about the organism, including a drawing. Present your report to your patrol or troop. (2) Do research on one species that was endangered or threatened but that has now recovered. Find out how the organism recovered, and what its new status is. Write a 100-word report on the species and discuss it with your counselor. (3) With your parent’s and counselor’s approval, work with a natural resource professional to identify two projects that have been approved to improve the habitat for a threatened or endangered species in your area. Visit the site of one of these projects and report on what you saw. 3(f) Pollution Prevention, Resource Recovery, and Conservation (1) Look around your home and determine 10 ways your family can help reduce pollution. Practice at least two of these methods for seven days and discuss with your counselor what you have learned. (2) Determine 10 ways to conserve resources or use resources more efficiently in your home, at school, or at camp. Practice at least two of these methods for seven days and discuss with your counselor what you have learned. (3) Perform an experiment on packaging materials to find out which ones are biodegradable. Discuss your conclusion with your counselor. Fire Safety MB (10:00) Audience: Youth The ability to use fire safely is essential to human survival. By earning this merit badge, Scouts will learn to uses fire safely and responsibly, how to prevent home fires, and how to handle fire safely, as well as burn prevention, and camping safety. Sessions Prerequisites Prerequisites Conduct a home safety survey with the help of an adult. Then do the following: a. Draw a home fire-escape plan, create a home fire-drill schedule, and conduct a home fire drill. 6a&b b. Test a smoke alarm and demonstrate regular maintenance of a smoke alarm. The Scout needs to: Bring fire escape plan and note from parent/guardian documenting home fire drill and smoke alarm test/maintenance. Visit a fire station. Identify the types of fire trucks. Find out about the fire prevention activities in your community. 11 The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from parent/guardian verifying visit along with a short report about the fire prevention activities in your community. First Aid MB (9:00 or 10:30) Audience: Youth First aid - caring for injured or ill persons until they can receive professional medical care - is an important skill for every Scout. With some knowledge of first aid, a Scout can provide immediate care and help to someone who is hurt or who becomes ill. First aid can help prevent infection and serious loss of blood. It could even save a limb or a life. The Neighborhood Coordinator will work in conjunction with our partnering organizations to teach youth life skills. Manage and run meetings on a weekly basis, church, or recreational center. This position is part time and located within the City of Canton and Canton City School District. Compensation will be $15 per hour and up to 20 hours per week. Be responsible for implementing and supervising the Scouting program for an in-school or after school setting. Requirements • Individuals, male or female, must be 21 years old. Scouting background (Boy or Girl Scouts) would be preferred, but not necessary. • The candidate must submit to a Boy Scouts of America, FBI, and BCI criminal background check and pass all three of these background checks. • Register as an Adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America, along with the requirement to complete mandatory training that includes the Youth Protection Training and Cub Scout leader training. • Receptive to work with young boys and girls, grades K-5. • Classroom Duties • Coordinates program schedule with the respective School Principal or other Point of Contact. • Executes lesson plans by grade each week. Program Duties • Conducts recruitment of youth at the respective schools served and turns in youth applications to the Director of Scoutreach. • Completes an annual re-Chartering process for submission to the local council office. • Keeps attendance records of those students participating in the program. • Execute weekly program to student participants .

    The where to go camping guide has been put together by the Order of the Arrow and the Outdoor Program Committee to give a list of places units can go for various activities. It contains a list of Camps, parks, and other facilities available within a reasonable distance. There are roughly 200 locations listed. Our hope is that you will use this guide as a reference as you research and plan your upcoming camping and hiking trips and other activities for your unit. Updated June 2018 Page 1 How to use this guide: The list is alphabetical, and each one contains at least one means of contact info. Below the contact info section is a website link, followed by if it has hiking trails, and last is the list of things the location has to offer. There will usually be two locations listed per page, with the document being 100 pages in length.
