Glossary This glossary contains Sanskrit words, people, places, and literature that appear in Upanishad Vahini. Some Sanskrit words have made their way into English and appear in English dictionaries. A few of them are used without definition in the text, but they are defined in this glossary. Among them areAtma , dharma, guru, karma, yogas, and yogi. The text uses standard spellings for Sanskrit, and this glossary provides the same spellings. But some of the Sanskrit compounds have been hyphenated between their constituent words to aid those who want to analyze the meanings of individual words. When compound words are broken, individual words are given. Aagama. That which has come or originated. The primeval source of knowledge. A name for Vedas. aapo-jyoti. Splendour of water. abhasa. Appearance, superimposition of false over real. a-bhaya. Fearlessness. a-chetana. Non-intelligent, unconscious, inert, senseless. a-dharma. Evil, unjustice. adhyasa. Superimposition. adi-atma. The Aruni (Aruneyi) Upanishad Translated by Swami Madhavananda - Published by Advaita Ashram, Kolkatta Om ! Let my limbs and speech, Prana, eyes, ears, vitality And all the senses grow in strength. All existence is the Brahman of the Upanishads. May I never deny Brahman, nor Brahman deny me. Let there be no denial at all: Let there be no denial at least from me. May the virtues that are proclaimed in the Upanishads be in me, Who am devoted to the Atman; may they reside in me. Om ! Let there be Peace in me ! Let there be Peace in my environment ! Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me ! ’ 1. Om. Aruna s son went to the sphere of Brahma, the Creator, and reaching there “ ” said, Lord, in what way can I relinquish work altogether ? Brahma said to him: You must give up your sons, brothers, friends, and the rest, your hair-tuft and the holy thread, your sacrifices and books regulating them, your scriptures; must give up the (seven upper) spheres entitled Bhur, Bhuvar, Svar, Mahar, Jana, Tapas, and Satya, and the (seven nether) spheres, viz., Atala, Patala, Vitala, Sutala, Rasatala, Talatala and Mahatala, together with the (whole) universe; and must take on the staff and the scanty clothing of the Sannyasin; you must renounce everything else, aye, everything else. 2. The householder, or the Brahmachari, or the Vanaprashta should commit the fires that lead to the different spheres to the fire that is in the stomach, and consign the sacred Mantra, Gayatri, to the fire that is in his own speech, should throw the holy ’ thread on the ground or into water. -

III ||August. 2018 || PP 22-26 Gender equality and ancient Indian culture: A study Atasi Mahapatra Assistant Professor, Department of PhilosophySahid Matangini Hazra Govt. College for women W.B, India. ABSTRACT: This paper demonstrate notion of gender equality, and its nature as well as status of women in ancient Indian culture. Gender equality between men and women means that different behaviour; aspirations and needs of women and men are considered, valued and favoured equally. But in ancient India specially, in Indus valley civilization, women had a respectable position in society. In early Vedic period, there was plethora of Goddesses to respect for women. In Vedic society women participated in religious ceremony and tribal assemblies. Widows could remarry and child marriages were unknown in society. But, in the later Vedic period, the position of women gradually deteriorated. The period clearly sees the growing tendency to stratify society along gender lines. Women lost their political rights. Child marriage, the system of Sati emerged in the shape of a formal custom during later Vedic period. But in Buddhist and Jain culture women were accorded respect and their rightful place in society. The directness of both languages is no less amazing than the sincerity and frankness with whicJT the deepest thoughts are expressed. Hindu philosophy had reached a height of insight when the be- ginnings of western philosophy were, to all appearance, still lost in speculations about the physical world. But the precocity of India was followed by a long period of slumber, as it were, which con- tinues almost down to the present. The schools that in later years engaged in hot disputes all seem to be below the level which had been attained long ago, while the principles set forth in Yedic times stand unshaken in their Himalayan solitude. In the West there has been a continrous efifort to build up idealistic systems, to keep them intact and buttress them. The strong critical tendency character- istic of the western attitude threatened to tear down the noblest structures, the highest ideas, wdiereas in India debates were meant only for raising the highest to yet loftier peaks. Eternal truths one left untouched in their original formulation with a piety known onlv to Orientals. The short, archaic ])hrases and definitions of the L'jianishads and cognate literature, which we here make the basis of our com- parison, are still the living heritage of India, and the forms which their highest speculations assumed are even now, after so manv centuries, considered ader|uate and concise. -
