2017 U18 Provincial Curling Champions The Brett Walter’s team playing out of the Morris Curling Club won the U18 Men’s Curling Championship on March 5. The Championship was held at the Springfield Curling Club in Dugald. The Championship team of Skip Brett Walter, Third Jordan Peters, second Zach Wasylik and lead Liam Tod and coached by Lorne Hamblin will compete at the first National Championship to be held in Moncton, NB April 18-22, 2017. Jordan, Zach and Liam play regularly in the Morris league and have been participants at Curl Manitoba’s Next Gen program running at the Cargill Curling Training Centre in Morris. The fourth on their team, Graeme Bergman, being too old for this competition was replaced with Brett Walter from Winnipeg. Brett has been training and competing with the team since early January. The team won the regionals in Plumas in early February defeating another Morris team and Cargill Curling Training Centre team, that being Josh Friesen. The final of the regionals was tightly contested and worthy of any provincial final. On the women’s side, Morris’s team of Hayley Bergman, Olivia Bruneau, Payton Bergman and Stasia Ginters were defeated at the regionals by the defending U18 Provincial Champions, Mackenzie Zacharias and her team from Altona, including Morgan Reimer, Emily Zacharias and Paige Beaudry. They went on to represent the Central region at the U18 Championship and won the gold medal as well and will accompany Brett’s team to the U18 Nationals. On the same weekend, the Morris Curling Club/Cargill Curling Training Centre also had a team competing at the U18 mixed doubles. Hayley Bergman and Zach Wasylik earned a bronze medal at this event. Brett Walter and his sister, Meghan, won the gold medal defeating Klaudius Harsch and Bianca Dubois from the Rossmere Curling Club. There is no National event for this competition. The Cargill Curling Training Centre congratulates all the teams competing in this event and acknowledges their accomplishments. The Centre also congratulates all the other curlers that have represented their schools and the club at various provincials. In all 13 teams/individuals involved in Cargill Curling Training Centre have qualified to play in 13 provincial competitions this season. The Morris Curling Club will be hosting a send-off social on April 8 at the Morris Curling Club. We encourage everyone to come out and wish the team well at the National event in Moncton. 150 NOTABLE MANITOBA CURLING TEAMS In honour of Manitoba’s 150 th Anniversary, the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame and Museum has undertaken to identify 150 teams which played a significant role in creating (in the early years) and extending (in more recent times) Manitoba’s reputation for competitive excellence in the world of curling. Our list acknowledges teams from all competitive sectors from the high-profile junior and men’s and women’s teams to less well-known teams at the mixed, senior, and masters levels and even outside the association realm in the deaf, police and postal championship realms. All of these successful teams played roles in establishing Manitoba’s well-deserved reputation. We also acknowledge recent successes in the new discipline of Mixed Doubles but this historical perspective is focussed on the traditional four-person game. INVITATION TO THE PUBLIC TO ADD TO THE LIST: A total of 150 teams were identified initially. Subsequently two missed teams have been added so the list now includes 152 teams. There are many other teams across Manitoba’s curling history which also belong on a listing of this nature. Manitoba curling fans are invited to suggest other teams for inclusion. In most cases, the teams are included on this list on the basis of the team’s on-ice success in a single outstanding year OR across a series of years. In the latter case, we have acknowledged that so long as three people remained on a team from a previous recorded success – then it was still the same team.

Two-year-old Kara Hamm and her parents Holly and Cody cut the cake in celebration of the new offi ces alongside Dr. Richard Keijzer, who performed the surgery that saved Kara’s life as a newborn. Kara was born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a hole in her diaphragm and abnormally developed lungs that would have made every breath she took a struggle. Holly Hamm says they found out something was wrong with their baby at her 20 week prenatal appointment, but there was little that could be done in utero. “We found out because her heart was pushed over to the right, and so that’s one of the signs that they look for,” Hamm recalls. “So we were sent off to Winnipeg right away to confi rm that it was CDH, and it was.” What followed was a multitude of tests, visits to the NICU in Winnipeg, and consultations with surgeons leading up to Kara’s birth in preparation for what would come immediately after.

Southwest British Columbia (southern Coast Mountains and Canadian Cascades) summary. For a variety of reasons 2003 was not as busy as 2002. Some of the activists were elsewhere, otherwise occupied, or injured. Fires burning throughout the backcountry from July through September also curtailed activity. Nonetheless, it was a fairly productive year. First, however, a few routes completed in 2002 but not mentioned in last year's summary should be noted for the sake of completeness, especially as they are fairly significant. In Cathedral Park, just north of the American border on the eastern side of the Cascades, Mike Crapo and Jordan Struthers established Goats Go To Heaven, Sheep Go To Hell (10 pitches, TD- IV 5.11 a V2) on the rock pillar between the south face of Mt. Grimface and the 1994 Beckey-Condon- Must route on Macabre Tower. The route is reportedly sustained at 5.10; the V2 refers to an unprotected boulder problem forming one of the cruxes. Meanwhile, at the other end of south western B.C., on the impressively deep fjord of Princess Louisa Inlet northwest of Powell River, Peter Rowat and John Brodie established PLI Trail (17 pitches, ED1/2 V 5.10+) on the lower part of the immense Princess Louisa Wall. They had begun attempts on this 1,400m wall back in 1986. The route, as presently defined, reaches a prominent pinnacle about halfway up the wall.
