The Brave Blossoms scored just the once before half time but added three more tries after the break.

Ayumu Goromaru’s penalty opened the scoring and although it was Japan who were dominating territory, Russia hit back with a try from Vladimir Ostroushko. Ramil Gayshin added the extra two and Kingsley Jones’ side led 7-3.

A break from Goromaru in the 15th minute was finished off by and the conversion made it 10-7.

A brace of penalties from Gayshin saw Russia regain the lead before Goromaru’s penalty made it 13-13 at the break.

That was as good as it got for Russia though as they failed to score any second half points.

Michael Broadhurst, who impressed against Wales last summer, crossed two minutes after the break with Goromaru converting and kicking a Pictures kindly supplied by Tony Bale penalty.

With the Autumn internationals underway this North Wales Senior Cup, group stage match, was re-arranged under the floodlights at Cae Dolawel on Thursday 14th of November.

Both sides took time to settle in to what was a stop start first half, full of handling errors and too many penalties. In fact most of the half was played between the two 22 meter lines with neither side gaining any kind of possession or territory over the other. Try scoring chances were few and far between and the only real points scoring chance was a penalty missed by Bethesda’s centre Llyr Morris from 30 meters after Bro were penalised for holding on.

The second half was much better, Bro playing with the slight slope took the game to their visitors and within minutes they were awarded a penalty after Bethesda were penalised for offside. Fly half Danial Mc- Cormick’s effort from 40 meters falling just short of the crossbar.

It was the visitors who finally broke the deadlock with two penalties within ten minutes of each other. Morris firstly converting after Bro were penalised on the 22 for offside and then extending the lead with another 30 meter penalty awarded for holding on.

The hosts continued to pressurise deep inside the visitors half and went close from a lineout only to knock on and allow ‘Besda to clear from the ensuing . The games next scoring chance came against the run of play, Bro once more pressurised inside their opponents 22 but turnover ball was won by Bethesda’s hooker Steven Roberts who raced up field repelling would be tacklers in his way. Two phases later Bethesda spread the ball one way before the other only for Bro to be penalised for not rolling away in a tackle - but Morris once more failed to convert.

McCormick was then given another chance to bring his side back into the match after Bethesda were penalised for holding on but he also to failed to convert from 30 meters.

The games only try came on twenty five minutes once more against the run of play, Bro rucked and mauled their way to within meters of Bethesda’s try line. The visitors won turnover ball by number 8 Arwyn Griffith who spotted an opening in broken play and raced 50 meters before being tackled, three phases later second row Dylan Owen crashed over for a try converted from the tightest of angles by centre Morris.

Bethesda then found themselves down to 14 after substitute scrum half Graham Davies was sin binned for continuous infringements in the ruck.

Bro should have made the extra man count but found themselves pe- nalised once more - this time for driving the scrum before the ball and Morris duly converted.

The hosts squandered two more try scoring chances before the final whistle was blown.

Bro will host mid table Denbigh next to finish off the first half of the SWALEC League Division 1 North, a must win match to turn their season around and gain any self belief. While top of the table Bethesda are away to Caernarfon. Both matches to be played on Saturday 23rd of November kick off at 2.30pm. Got a match report to share? Abergele earned a deserved win in this local derby cup match with a 5 tries to 1 victory at the Waen.

Although Rhyl kept the score close for much of the game, only losing 17-7 with 10 minutes remaining, thanks to a Nick Wolstenholme try converted by Martin Colin, the visitors sealed the game with 2 late tries.

The almost telepathic understanding developed while playing together for Cardiff and Wales saw Williams and Matthews play prominent roles on the 1950 Lions tour - the first of the post-War era.
