ROBERT SILVER, BSc (HONS) CHANCELLOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It is my honour, on behalf of The University of Winnipeg community, to offer sincere congratulations to each of you on your achievements. Today we gather to celebrate your success and to pause and reflect on where you will go next — whether you are launching a career, pursuing further studies, or taking off to explore the world — you have reached an important milestone on your journey. This is also a time for us to recognize and value the support and encouragement you have received from professors, family, friends, and fellow students who have helped you realize your dreams. It was Rudyard Kipling who said “He travels the fastest who travels alone.” A wise person adds “We who travel farthest, travel with others.” UWinnipeg is located on Treaty One land in the heart of the Métis nation, and we are a richly diverse community. It is our underlying strength. We are deeply committed to reaching out to all students, including those who have traditionally faced barriers to participating in post- secondary education. I hope you have been enriched by the exposure to the many ideas, cultures and life experiences that flourish here. You are now members of the extended UWinnipeg family, joining more than 50,000 people who have passed through these doors as students. I am one of those graduates, and I attribute my academic and career successes to the solid foundation I received at UWinnipeg and the dedicated professors who inspired me to continue to strive and learn. It is our sincere hope that your time at UWinnipeg has allowed you to realize your unique talents as you move forward to create a difference in your community. On behalf of our faculty and staff, congratulations once again and please accept my best wishes for your adventures ahead. DR. This year, The Alumni Association Council is proud to present internationally-renowned architectural historian Dr. Frank Albo with the Distinguished Alumni Award for his numerous contributions to The University of Winnipeg. Abandoned Temple: Rehabilitation of Masonic Temple in Winnipeg by Noushin Nayyeri A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Architecture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario ©2016 Noushin Nayyeri ABANDONED TEMPLE REHABILITATION OF MASONIC TEMPLE IN WINNIPEG ABSTRACT The Masonic Temple is a vital Winnipeg building that has been vacant and exposed to deterioration for over a decade. This thesis will explore strategies for rescuing this building and intervening in the heritage site such that the building becomes involved with the city once again. The thesis will explore the cultural value of the Masonic Temple, its history, and its current condition. It will propose ways to preserve the façade as a container whilst opening the interior of the building to host another ‘building’ and program. This proposal will reflect on the symbolism, strict architectural principles, and lasting secrecy of the Free Masons. These ideas will be a tool that shapes the program and will include an inventive series of spaces for various functions related to local art and architecture.
