  • A History of Video Game Consoles Introduction the First Generation
A History of Video Game Consoles By Terry Amick – Gerald Long – James Schell – Gregory Shehan Introduction Today video games are a multibillion dollar industry. They are in practically all American households. They are a major driving force in electronic innovation and development. Though, you would hardly guess this from their modest beginning. The first video games were played on mainframe computers in the 1950s through the 1960s (Winter, n.d.). Arcade games would be the first glimpse for the general public of video games. Magnavox would produce the first home video game console featuring the popular arcade game Pong for the 1972 Christmas Season, released as Tele-Games Pong (Ellis, n.d.). The First Generation Magnavox Odyssey Rushed into production the original game did not even have a microprocessor. Games were selected by using toggle switches. At first sales were poor because people mistakenly believed you needed a Magnavox TV to play the game (GameSpy, n.d., para. 11). By 1975 annual sales had reached 300,000 units (Gamester81, 2012). Other manufacturers copied Pong and began producing their own game consoles, which promptly got them sued for copyright infringement (Barton, & Loguidice, n.d.). The Second Generation Atari 2600 Atari released the 2600 in 1977. Although not the first, the Atari 2600 popularized the use of a microprocessor and game cartridges in video game consoles. The original device had an 8-bit 1.19MHz 6507 microprocessor (“The Atari”, n.d.), two joy sticks, a paddle controller, and two game cartridges. Combat and Pac Man were included with the console. In 2007 the Atari 2600 was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame (“National Toy”, n.d.).

  • History of Nintendo – Comprehension
The history of Nintendo – comprehension The history of Nintendo Nintendo is a Japanese company that has made video games and video game consoles since the 1970s. It was originally a company that made playing cards and then it started to make toys. Nintendo began making video games in the 1970s. In 1980, the company released a hand-held game device called ‘Game and Watch’. It was battery operated and not in colour but the games were very playable and fun. Nintendo's first video game console was the colour TV Game, Famicom, but the company really became successful with its second console, "Nintendo Entertainment System", or NES for short. Nintendo also released many popular video games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and The Legend of Zelda. Later, the company made hand-held consoles such as the Game Boy and DS, and consoles such as Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, and WiiU. Nintendo’s newest release is the Nintendo Switch. It has a smart design and different functions but some fans have said the games and accessories are too expensive. The switch will compete with Sony’s PS4 virtual reality headset in a very crowded market. © www.teachitprimary.co.uk 2017 29783 Page 1 of 3 The history of Nintendo – comprehension Name: ............................................................... • Should You Buy the Nintendo Switch?
Should You Buy the Nintendo Switch? By Nathaniel Evans I have been playing Nintendo consoles since I was 6 years old. I first played games offered by Nintendo Game Boy Advance and, as the years went by, I moved on to the Nintendo Ds then the Nintendo Wii. I own every single console ever made by Nintendo, except the Nintendo Wii-U because it would have been redundant. Having been a huge Nintendo fan my entire life and based on my experience with the consoles, I can attest that the Nintendo Switch is well worth the money and just may be the best console that they have ever produced. If you have not bought a Nintendo Switch yet, allow me to share with you why I did. The Nintendo Switch is not any run of the mill console. Yes, it outputs video of your games to a television just like any other console, but it has one added benefit, portability. Haven’t you ever wanted to just take your PS4 or Xbox One anywhere at any time, but cannot because it must be tethered to a television at all times? Well, the Switch has you backed up since the Switch not only outputs to a television screen, but it is also a tablet that allows you to play video games anywhere and at any time on the built in screen. Ever notice how creative Nintendo’s hardware is compared to the competition? They were one of the first to have an analog stick fully integrated into a console in the 90s on the Nintendo 64, they were the first to fully integrate motion control gaming into a console with the Wii, and in the recent past, they were the first to make a console that is fully portable and still have it pack a graphics punch.

2020 HOLIDAY The 2020 Holiday shopping season continues to generate some astonishing statistics, not to mention fun and games, as well as the occasional surprise. Given the pre-sale hype of PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox series S and X in September 2020 and their official November release dates, the unexpected mid-December release of new games such as Among Us, and increased general demand for at-home entertainment attributed to the pandemic, our newest holiday report focuses on gaming consoles, the #1 growth item online from October to November 2020. +1425%* VIDEO GAME CONSOLES *MoM Growth Oct. to Nov. 2020 according to 1010data eCommerce data © Copyright 2020 1010data Services LLC. Ryan Buller 337 Lending Video Game Consoles in an Academic 17.2. Library portal Ryan Buller publication, abstract: This paper will outline the process and discussions undertaken at the University of Denver’s University Libraries to implement a lending service providingfor video game consoles. Faculty and staff at the University Libraries decided to pursue the new lending service, though not a traditional library offering, to support the needs of a video game design curriculum in the university’s Emergent Digital Practices program. By rethinking the role and scope of the library collection, the library met the demonstrated needs of an emerging program and reinforced its usefulness to the campus community. accepted and Introduction edited, n May 2015, the University of Denver’s University Libraries instituted a new service to support interdepartmentalcopy courses aimed at video game design and creation. The new service provided video game consoles for circulation to the university commu- Inity. The decision to offer this new resource was aided by a grant from the University Libraries Association awarded to a professor in the Emergent Digital Practices program. This grant would help pay for the building of a video game collection in the University Libraries toreviewed, support the academic pursuits of the Emergent Digital Practices program in video game creation. A cornerstone of this grant was that it would incorporate many differentpeer aspects of video game creation, including programming, design, writing, and music,is thus bringing a truly interdepartmental approach to this fledgling program. Ad- ministrators and faculty at the University Libraries became convinced that the library mss.could contribute substantially to this endeavor.
