EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT August & September 2018 Friday 31st Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 [email protected] www.kivells.com Friday 31st September 537 STORE CATTLE, STIRKS & BEEF BREEDING CATTLE – 10AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Steers to £1300 Heifers to £1280 “These cattle are a monstrous trade” Another top quality entry of store cattle saw steers rise to £1300 for an eye catching bunch of five British Blue steers (23m) from John Searle of Crediton with Simmental bullocks of a similar age from John reaching £1240 and heifers of the same breed topping that section at a massive £1280. Charolais steers (20m) saw a high of £1180 for Stephen Slade of Aylesbeare whilst Blondes (25m) off the same farm fetched £1160 and a super run of cattle from Ian Littlejohns, Okehampton saw a pen of four smart Limousin steers (at only 16m) sell well at £1125 apiece. Further bunches of Blues (22m) drawing £1100 for Keith White & family of Sandford. A pen of seven South Devon steers (18m) like ‘peas in a pod’ made £1095 for Terry & Louise Gostling of Hittisleigh and even David Skelley Snr, Ivybridge was “happy with his trade” when selling a trio of smart Salers steers (20m) for £945 a life. Best straight dairy bred steers came once again from Tony West of South Zeal with another mixed breed pen of four (21m) at £825 a head whilst the better of the younger steers hit £995 for Harold Keast & Partners of Coldridge with a couple of Limousins (15m). Top priced heifers already mentioned but others of note included three Limousins (19m) at £1190 for Ian Littlejohns, a grand South Devon heifer (29m) at £1105 for Sharpham Estate of Totnes and a single Simmental (20m) reaching £1080 for Stephen Slade. Younger Limousin bred females (18m) from G & WG Rogers up from Hayle looked good money at £1080 whilst later born Limousin heifers (15m) were also dear at £1050 for Harold Keast & Partners and G & WG Rogers again. 114 STIRKS & SUCKLED CALVES – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A real mixed entry of stirks and suckled calves met a very mixed trade. Medium to top order cattle a wanted commodity whilst perhaps the out of spec and harder done cattle meeting less of a demand. Martin Daw of Ugborough showed smart Limousin cross steers (7m) which topped at £690, South Devon steers from Jim Lieurance of Poundsgate achieved £680, Smallake Farm, Dunsford hit £640 for good Angus steers (7m), whilst a bunch of Hereford cross steers from Darrin Hooper of Saltash realised £590. Blue heifers topped at £570 for William Braund of Whitstone (13m), Limousin cross heifers from Martin Daw attained £510 (7m), whilst similar sorts from Harold Keast & Partners of Coldridge attained £490. A Aberdeen Angus 8 285 249 9 150 115 smart young Angus bull sold to £268 for Martin & Liz Bennett. Heifer calves sold to £295 for a British Blue Hereford 4 285 212 12 180 101 from Kathryn Starr of Dunkeswell with others to Holstein / Friesian 12 85 20 £295 (x3) for Blade Farming. 100 ACRES OF STANDING MAIZE – 1PM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 100 acres of maize met with a limited trade but topped at £700 per acre for Graham Kerslake of Crediton. This was a super herd of cows & calves and quality was in real demand topping at £2050 for a Limousin heifer with her January born steer calf at foot. A 2012 born Limousin cow sold with her February born heifer calf at £1900 whilst a 2014 born Pedigree Limousin cow sold with her April born purebred steer calf at £1880. A 2011 born Limousin x cow sold with her February born steer calf at £1780. Other outfits sold to £1620, £1600, £1580 (x2), £1550 (x2) & £1520 with all the outfits averaging well at £1394. Autumn calving in-calf cows also sold well to £1400 for a 2013 born Simmental with other similar cows selling to £1380 & £1300. The calves to these cows were sold in the ring with the cows separately and the 8-10 month old steers sold to £830, £805, £795, £760 & £750 and the heifers sold exceptionally well to £800, £770 & £730. 2612 SHEEP – 10.30AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 2029 STORE LAMBS A busy day in the sheep pens kicked off with an unexpectedly high number over 2000 store lambs selling to the usual compliment of buyers and a straight trade considering. Top was £87 for DF & JL Shervington of Hittisleigh who sold other forward sorts at £79, as all John Vooght of Dunsford, and brother Michael Vooght of Hennock and Paul & Matt Gammin of East Ogwell achieved £76 of their best with a countless number of pens trading from £72 to £75. Medium keep lambs generally from £61 to £72 depending on breed and condition with the longer term sorts usually all £48 plus and looking slightly dearer than the last few sales. Overall average of £57.53 is within a few pence of last week’s. 65 GRAZING EWES & RAMS Grazers sold to £80 for a ram from Torcountry Ltd of Newton Abbot and £65.50 for Lleyn ewes from AJ & AE Mabin of Gara Bridge. Majority of the rest were genuine grazing sorts and sold at realisation from £30 to £54. 139 BREEDING EWES & RAMS This week’s entry of breeding ewes reached £120BREED for twoING pens EWES of nice Mule& RAMS shearlings from Ross & Emma Sizmur of Okehampton as lambed Mashams of the same age sold to £100 & £96 for Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick and flock aged mules from Clive Webb of Tiverton achieved £75. A few breeding rams topped at £180 for a Suffolk from Tony England of Tiverton and Rob Thorn of Chagford sold a crossbred FM at £130. 4 EWES & 5 LAMBS (9 LIVES) Broken mouth Swale ewes with strong singles soldBREEDING to £90 for EWESDave Webber & RAMS of Umberleigh who also had a double with younger lambs bid to £122. ANNUAL SHOW & SALE OF 370 WHITEFACE DARTMOOR SHEEP The annual sale of Whiteface Dartmoor sheep sawBREEDING a large line EWES up of over & RAMS fifty rams sell to a steady trade but high clearance rate with just over 80% changing hands. The pre-sale Champion from Richard & Peter Mann of Widecombe topped the sale when lot 27 sold for 620gns to the Caunter family of Ipplepen who had already parted with the first prize older ram, a homebred FM that achieved 600gns and finding its new home with Phillip & Christine Caunter of Harbertonford. Next highest price was 380gns given for another FM ram, this time bred by CE Caunter & Son and sold by Phil Abel of Tavistock, it was snapped up by Peter & Richard Mann. Three rams then sold for 300gns, being from CE Caunter & Son, RS Mann and also from Arthur & Rosemary Wrayford of Denbury. Best of the rest generally 180-280gns. In the female pens, there was a good level of interest and support for the purebred ewes, considering the season and reports from other sales. The first prize pen of older ewes were exhibited by Patrick, William & Clyde Coaker of Widecombe, being a smart pen of 10 6T ewes that topped the sale at £90 going home with the Mortimore family of Lamb Park, Chagford. These were followed by the second prize pen of older ewes, coming from Phillip & Richard Coaker of Postbridge and selling at £75 & £72 to near neighbours KJ Watson. Also at £75 were the first prize pen of shearling ewes, exhibited by Claire Butcher of Manaton and purchased by Jessica Steer of Ashburton who also acquired the next top price sheep being shearlings from Arthur & Rosemary Wrayford at £74. Majority of others traded £52 to £72 with only a few pens less than £50. Ewe lambs as always were harder to place but topped at £56 for Richard Eastmond of Ivybridge. The Whiteface Dartmoor crosses consisted mainly of Blueface Leicester sired sheep that sold to £88 & £82 for young ewes from Russell & Jessica Steer of Ashburton, £78 for Ewe Lambs from Phillip Coaker of Postbridge and £70 for FW Baker of South Allington.
