Our goal is to provide a comprehensive educational program where students are able to reach their fullest potential. We are committed to creating a culture of excellence and we promise to do our very best to meet the needs of every child, every day. At Shawsheen, we follow the SOARing thunderbird expectations: Safe, Organized, Achieving, Respectful, and Responsible. We value the uniqueness of each child. We strive to create a safe learning environment where students are able to focus on learning. This handbook is intended to be a quick reference guide to our school. The handbook provides information regarding the policies and procedures that govern Shawsheen Elementary and Weld County School District 6. We strongly encourage you to examine this handbook and discuss the appropriate information with your child. On behalf of the entire Shawsheen faculty and staff, you are cordially invited to visit the school and to be an active part of your child’s education. Please know that I am available to answer questions and discuss your concerns. I will be respectful to everyone and responsible with all my words and actions; to make Shawsheen a great school! 3 THE STORY OF SHAWSHEEN Shawsheen was a beautiful Indian maiden. In 1863, she was within minutes of being burned to death by the Cheyenne, at the site in Greeley now known as Island Grove Park, when she was rescued by Company B of the First Colorado Regiment. Shawsheen had been captured by the Arapahoe and traded to the Cheyenne. After her rescue, the United States Army returned Shawsheen to her people, but she never forgot the kindness shown to her by the soldiers. She became a very close friend of many settlers, including the Nathan C. Meeker family. In 1870, sixteen years after her rescue, Shawsheen was given the opportunity to repay the people who saved her life. As the sister of the great Ute Chief Ouray, she used her influence to dramatically aid in the rescue of Mrs. Meeker, her daughter Josephine, Mrs. Flora Ellen Price, and her two children – Johnnie and May, who had been captured by Indians during the Meeker Massacre. Mr. Meeker, founder of the Union Colony and the City of Greeley, was killed during the Indian uprising. The people of Greeley, where Nathan Meeker and his family lived for so many years, have never forgotten the important part Shawsheen played in gaining the release of the white captives. Conference days have been set in the school calendar. If you can’t arrange to attend any of the scheduled times, please ask the teacher for an alternative appointment. It is very important that parents attend conferences. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher at a time of the year in addition to Parent/Teacher Conferences, please follow the process listed below. Process: ​ ➢ Parents/ guardians contact the office (348-2300) and request an appointment with the teacher and/ or other staff who may work with their child. ➢ The staff member will contact parents/guardians and set up a mutual time to meet. In this manner, we will be able to ensure that those affected by the resolution of the situation are involved in the discussion. ➢ Appointments will be scheduled if further meetings are needed to resolve the issue. Notes Home Many times throughout the year, parents will receive correspondence from the school, typically in the Thursday Folders. Upon occasion, it is necessary to respond to and return notes to the school. We request any correspondence requiring return to school be returned promptly. Monthly Newsletters The office will send a newsletter each month. The newsletter will provide information and a calendar of upcoming events. Throughout the school year, a Shawsheen Shout Out (phone call or you may opt for email) will also advise you of upcoming events and important information. Information will be sent home when available. Parent Teacher Conference Schedule Fall Sept. 28 (8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Oct. 1 (3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Spring Feb. 1 (8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Feb. 3 (3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Wellness Policy School District 6 has adopted a wellness policy that states that 50% of all food and beverages at school celebrations should be healthy items. Ask your child’s teacher for a list of some health ideas. As required ​ by the Weld County Health Department, all party treats, birthday treats, or snacks must be prepackaged, not homemade items. Items purchased from a bakery are acceptable. The purpose of this policy is to protect the health of all children at school. 8 Homework Parents have a responsibility to make sure children have a set place and time to do homework. A consistent time should be chosen that works for the family, for example: before going out to play or after dinner. It is also good to identify a quiet place to sit and concentrate, and establish a daily routine that includes homework. Homework should be put in their backpack when it is completed. Teachers use homework as a gauge that tells them if students understood the concepts that were taught. Students have the responsibility to know how to complete their homework on their own. If they have any questions, they should be asking the teacher. Sometimes, depending on the children’s age, they may need an adult to help them approach the teacher the first time. Parties School parties are planned by room parents and teachers for Halloween, Winter, and Valentine's Day. Teachers and parent helpers for parties should meet and set up clear expectations for individual classrooms for the amount of sweets and healthy foods to be served. Fifty percent of food served at parties must be healthy foods. Holiday parties begin at 2:30 and end at 3:10. Some grade levels may celebrate earlier. Information regarding specific times ​ for parties will be sent home in advance. Birthday Parties Birthday parties for individual children are not considered an instructional part of the school program. However, if a child brings treats to share with the class, the treats will be shared during the last few minutes of the day on ONLY the specified days. At Shawsheen, we celebrate for all children who have a birthday during that month during the first Friday of every month from 2:50-3:10. The grade level that has Specials at the end of the day parties will adjust their time.

    Shawsheen Shawsheen was a Ute Indian Princess. Shawsheen (Shosheen) was Chief Ourayʼs sister. Her name means “Shining Water.” One of her Ute names was Cutshutchous. It meant "Elk Tooth Dress." Her descendants (family members today) give her name as She-towitch, so that probably was her given name. In her adult life, she was called Susan Johnson. Shawsheen was captured by the Arapaho Indians while hunting. During the summer of 1863, Shawsheen was in the Big Thompson Canyon on a hunting trip with her family when she was captured by a band of 200 Arapaho. Later she was traded to the Cheyenne. One story tells that she was held prisoner for two years, when a group of soldiers from Camp Collins (Ft. Collins today) were riding in the area known today as Island Grove Park. The soldiers saw Shawsheen tied to a cottonwood tree, and they released her. The soldiers called her “Susan” or "Shawsheen." Another tells that the soldiers saw her, they released her and one of the soldiers took her to his home. His wife cared for Shawsheen, sewed her calico dresses, gave her the name Susan and wanted to adopt her into the family. But she knew that Shawsheen wanted to go home to her people. They were waiting to get her home safely. The Arapaho were looking for her so it was dangerous for Shawsheen to leave. However, one day they returned home to find that Shawsheen had left taking clothes, some meat and a knife. Later some white men found her and were able to get her home to her people.

  • Josephine Meeker Josephine Meeker Was Nathan Meeker's Daughter
    Josephine Meeker Josephine Meeker was Nathan Meeker's daughter. She was the youngest child. She was born in Ohio on June 28, 1857. She was 13 when the family came to settle Greeley. Her older brother, George, had died during the locating trip to found Greeley. Ralph, the eldest, moved back to New York to work for the New York Herald as a reporter. The three daughters Rozene, Mary and Josephine stayed in Greeley with their parents. Josephine was an independent girl and would get into trouble a little bit. One day she rode her horse through town while racing, she fell and most likely had a concussion. The Greeley Tribune wrote an article saying, "Girls should be more careful racing their horses." She was adventurous, as well. She climbed Long's Peak in 1874. It is one of Colorado's highest peaks, and is a difficult peak to climb. Josephine wanted a career. Her brother Ralph sent her a Yost writing machine so she could learn to type. She used it for most of her letters and writing. Just before moving to the White River Indian Agency with her parents, she was attending a business school in Denver. Josephine went to White River to be a teacher for the Ute children. Only three children wanted to go to school, so Josephine spent most of her days getting to know the Ute families. Her father would remind her that she was supposed to teach the Utes; not learn from them. The Utes liked her. One woman made her a gift of moccasins.

Throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Utes and non-Utes memorialized, in a variety of ways, the violence that led to Ute Removal from western Colorado. Within this history of violence, removal, and remembrance, Utes and non-Utes framed nineteenth-century encounters with religious beliefs and practices. Within the setting of the American West, land and its use figured prominently in these encounters and remembrances. By focusing on contact between one tribe, this dissertation grounds scholars in a localized history that mirrors a national narrative of conflict, loss, and reconciliation. The study interrogates the way in which white and American Indian societies have employed religious and non- religious identities, notions of history and progress, and the elusive specter of memory in order to claim the land. Using archival sources, newspapers, oral histories, popular literature, and field observations, it models a way for scholars to incorporate American Indian history more fully into the narrative of American religious history.

Administrative/Biographical History Biographical Note of Nathan Cook Meeker Nathan Cook Meeker was born in Euclid, Ohio on July 12, 1817 to Enoch Meeker and Lurana (Hulbert) Meeker and was one of four brothers. He wrote and philosophized from an early age, regularly submitting articles to local publications. At age 17, Meeker left home and traveled to New Orleans. He got a job as copy boy on the New Orleans Picayune. Not able to make a living, he returned to Ohio in the late 1830s. Meeker graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio. Longing to become a poet, he taught school in Cleveland and Philadelphia so that he could earn enough money to move to New York and realize that dream. Finally able to move, he rented a poet’s attic room in New York and became a regular contributor to N.P. Willis’ “Mirror”. Unable to make a living, he once again returned to Euclid and became a traveling salesman.
