I also want to thank Tod Goldberg for accepting me into the program and for his very insightful comments on my work. The smart, thoughtful feedback from Mary Yukari Waters was also instrumental in getting my story where it needed to be. Thanks also to my many colleagues at UCR who provided very valuable comments on my work and whose work I too admire. I am so lucky to have had you as friends in this program, so much so that I copied verbatim the first half of this sentence from the sample acknowledgments page in the thesis review packet. Last, I want to thank my parents Suresh and Shaila Supekar who gave me the stories to tell and the desire to tell them by virtue of just being here, in America, as immigrants who left so much behind in India. And of course, none of my work would be possible without the love—upon which everything is built, really—from my partner Arturo Aguilar, who pushed me to follow my dream and has supported me in every way throughout this journey.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Six Environmental Activists Win Goldman Prize
03 May 2012 | MP3 at voaspecialenglish.com Six Environmental Activists Win Goldman Prize Goldman Prize Winners of the 2012 Goldman Prize FAITH LAPIDUS: Welcome to AMERICAN MOSAIC in VOA Special English. (MUSIC) I'm Faith Lapidus. This week on our program, we play music from the singer- songwriter Santigold… And, check out some of the advice on our relationship blog for a very shy man in Brazil … But first we tell about the recent winners of the twenty-twelve Goldman Prize for environmental activism. (MUSIC) 2012 Goldman Prize FAITH LAPIDUS: The Goldman Environmental Foundation recently recognized a group of individuals for their efforts to protect the environment. Each year, the American-based group honors environmental activists from six different areas. 2 The first three winners of the twenty-twelve Goldman Prize are from Kenya, the Philippines and China. Barbara Klein tells about them. BARBARA KLEIN: The Goldman Environmental Foundation says Ikal Angelei is a hero to the people who live around Lake Turkana. The Kenyan woman received the award because of her efforts to halt a dam project on a river in Ethiopia. Critics say the dam would harm the lake and restrict the flow of water for people who live nearby. Ikal Angelei formed an organization called the Friends of Lake Turkana. Its campaign against the dam was successful. And, the project has been halted – for now. The Philippine island of Mindoro is home to tribes that depend on the area's natural resources for food and jobs. Edwin Gariguez became concerned when a European company announced plans to mine for nickel on the island.

Something’s happened to me over the last five years. I listen to, and trust, pop music far less than I did in my twenties, and the pop that I still listen to is radically different than what I grew up with. My ears cock, like a cat’s, more toward jazz, avant-garde, and instrumental hip-hop now than to the rock, rap, R&B, and beat-driven fare that sustained me for twenty years. To be fair, jazz was always there, ever since I bought a $20 CD of Miles Davis’s Capitol/Blue Note years in a cold January morning in 1994. I bought it from Sound Warehouse, a chain that’s long gone, because the cover was cool and Davis—with his close-cropped hair and natty suit—looked cooler than I could ever hope for. It was a sophistication to aspire toward, and to try and impress girls with.

Duray, Dan. "Kehinde Wiley, Fresh From Israel, Brings His Ferocious Poses and Flashy Duds to the Jewish Museum," Gallerist NY – The New York Observer, March 6, 2012. The artist Kehinde Wiley does a lot of things. Later this week he opens “The World Stage: Israel,” a 15-painting show at the Jewish Museum that brings his Old Masters lens to the night club denizens of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. His first major show with his new gallery, Sean Kelly, opens in May, and he’s just done a career-spanning monograph with Rizzoli—all this in addition to doing a portrait for the cover of the new Santigold album. He also does a solid impression of his former New York dealer Jeffrey Deitch. When The Observer told Mr. Wiley we were going to reach out to Mr. Deitch for this piece, he jumped into it, hunching his shoulders to make himself shorter in his chair at his Soho apartment Monday. “So, so, so,” he said in a low, nasally voice, squinting to imply that the forthcoming flattery should be taken very seriously. “Kehinde’s doing fantastically.” Mr. Wiley now operates three studios around the world, one in New York, one in Beijing, where he keeps two Italian greyhounds in addition to the three he keeps here, and another in Dakar. He’s planning a fourth in the jungles of the Dominican Republic large enough to accommodate six other artists. The idea, he said, is to create a place where he can invite his artist friends. “I want to be able to ask them, ‘Hey, want to go paint in the middle of nowhere?’” he said.
