(See page 3) - 7 - CD Review : PLAYING A-ROUND WITH DULCIMERS Mark Gilston RCMG10-0110 Mark Gilston is an eclectic, talented musician, adept with many instruments, a First Prize winner in a mountain dulcimer competition. See him in concert if you can, or check out his many fine CDs (and his books, with music, linked to the various CDs) This recent recording will be of special interest to lovers of rounds, but others should enjoy it too. Sixty-four minutes long, it's an instrumental album, Mark on the dulcimer, performing 30 rounds, some familiar, some not. (Words available; see below.) Each begins as a solo, then the different parts enter and the harmonies emerge, with artful arrangements. Great tunes, always interesting, never boring. It opens, appropriately, with "Welcome, Welcome, Every Guest," followed by the mirthful toast, "Now We Are Met." Later on there are other cheery toasts, and many classics -- "Dona Nobis," the touching "When Jesus Wept" (William Billings), Purcell's "Cakes and Ale", and others. There are many exhilarating gems -- "Joy and Temperance" (a Seeger family favorite), "Tzena Tzena," "Kum Bachur," "Christ Church Bells," "Ring in the New Year," and other lively examples. Even well known ones, like "Rose, Rose," become magical and truly majestic. And 19 more! Some of the lesser known ones are by the likes of Orlando di Lasso and, of course, A. Nonymous. Old friends, new surprises. The CD is $15 + 5 shipping; the CD + accompanying book is $30 + 5 shipping. The book includes an essay on the subject, music and dulcimer tablature for 28 of the rounds, and the words. Album notes and the words can be seen on his website. The CD alone can be ordered from http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/MarkGilston , or directly: Mark Gilston, 1507 Fall Creek Drive, Cedar Park, TX 78613. The CD/book package may be ordered from Mark directly. For Luddites, word sheets (free!) can be requested when purchasing the CD directly from Mark.
