Suffolk County Council, BSA The Benjamin Tallmadge Historic Trail Suffolk County Council, BSA Brookhaven, New York The starting point of this Trail is the Town of Brookhaven parking lot at Cedar Beach just off Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, NY. Hikers can be safely dropped off at this loca- tion. 90% of this trail follows Town roadways which closely approximate the original route that Benjamin Tallmadge and his contingent of Light Dragoons took from Mount Sinai to the Manor of St. George in Mastic. Extreme CAUTION needs to be observed on certain heavily traveled roads. Some Town roads have little or no shoulders at all. Most roads do not have sidewalks. Scouts should hike in a single line fashion facing the oncoming traffic. They should be dressed in their Field Uniforms or brightly colored Class “B” shirt. This Trail should only be hiked in the daytime hours. Since this 21 mile long Trail is designed to be hiked over a two day period, certain pre- arrangements must be made. The overnight camping stay can be done at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island. Applications must be obtained and submitted to the Suffolk County Parks Department. On Day 2, the trail veers off Smith Road in Shirley onto a ser- vice access road inside the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge for about a mile before returning to the neighborhood roads. As a courtesy, the Wertheim Refuge would like a letter three weeks in advance informing them that you will be hiking on their property. There are no water sources along this hike so make sure you pack enough. -

Localities are listed alphabetically, followed by the counties in which they are located (in parentheses), postal addresses if different from the locality names, and ZIP codes where available. ZIP codes are for mailing purposes only. Since there may be more than one locality in a ZIP code or more than one ZIP code in a locality, do not use ZIP codes to determine the local sales tax rate for any locality. For example, some Larchmont and Scarsdale mailing addresses are actually in the city of New Rochelle, and some Scarsdale mailing addresses are in the city of Yonkers. April 2011 DRAFT Report P.I.N. 0059.08 CHAPTER 3 Transportation Conditions, Plans and Needs 3.1 Traffic Operations and Safety Under Task B of this study, typical of similar corridor transportation planning projects, a field survey and existing data collection program was conducted to inventory information on traffic operations and vehicular accidents. These surveys included travel speeds along NY 27 main roadways, travel speeds and delays at intersections along CR 80 (Montauk Highway), speeds at selected locations along both roadways as well as on I-495 (Long Island Expressway), and traffic volumes along each of these roadways as well as the major parallel and intersecting arterials within the study area. The survey techniques and equipment used were standard methods employed by the transportation engineering industry. Data on traffic accidents over the three year period from January 2005 to December 2007 were obtained from the State’s summarized accident report files. These data were used to document and analyze existing conditions in the study area and provided the basis for identifying deficiencies, confirming problem locations identified in the public outreach efforts and project advisory committee meetings, and developing future travel demand forecasts and alternative improvement recommendations. 3.1.1 Travel Speed and Delay Surveys Travel speed and delay surveys were conducted along NY 27 and CR 80 (Montauk Highway) during the AM and PM peak periods in January and February of 2009. The survey vehicle was driven at speeds corresponding to other westbound and eastbound vehicles on both roadways between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM and between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. -
