Ligue-1-2016 2017.Pdf
A Note from the Editor: For many, Ligue 1 cannot restart quickly enough following an almost perfect, but fundamentally cruel EURO 2016 for France on home soil. The pain suffered on that night in Paris by Didier Deschamps’s men and an entire nation remains all the more heartrending because of the newfound professionalism that Les Bleus conducted themselves with throughout the tournament. Karim Benzema antics aside, contrary to years of squad infighting, the team spirit inside the French camp was the strongest it had been since 2000. On the pitch, France proved that they are on the cusp of a new golden generation, with Samuel Umtiti, Kingsley Coman and Antoine Griezmann all shining. Although some of Les Bleus’ much touted young guns fell short of expectations, namely Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, France’s U19 EURO win further confirms that the future is astonishingly bright for French football on the international scene. One would not be foolish to expect there to be some turnover of talent for the 2018 World Cup cycle, with Patrice Evra and others’ involvement coming to an end. Much like Les Bleus therefore, Ligue 1 too can expect a very different feel for the 2016/17 season. PSG have entered a new era after President Al Khelaifi’s obsession for progression in the Champions’ League failed to be adequately satisfied by Laurent Blanc, leading to the latter’s dismissal. Les Parisiens have appointed Unai Emery in Blanc’s place, who brings a new-age management approach that relies on a squad instead of a team of individuals, a charge often leveled at Blanc’s PSG. -

Soccer has spread to every corner of the world and although it is not the most popular game everywhere, it is without a doubt the most popular sport in the world. This popularity of the sport has allowed for money to be poured into the game, both by sponsors and fans. The economics of the game have created a more competitive atmosphere within the sport. The competitive nature of the sport attracts more players every year from everywhere in the world. -
Ligue 1 2015/2016: Your Guide to the Season Ahead
Ligue 1 2015/2016: Your Guide to the Season Ahead Get French Football News A Note from the Editor: Explosive: not a word commonly associated with French football’s top flight in the 21st century. However, the 2014/15 campaign lived up to the aforementioned tag in some style, with Alexandre Lacazette-led surprise package Olympique Lyonnais taking PSG to the final pair of matches for the Ligue 1 top spot, not to mention Marcelo Bielsa’s revolutionary attempts at a magnificent, but unsustainable title charge with Marseille which fell to pieces come the turn of the calendar year. The introduction of so many new faces sitting on the end of substitute benches (or in some cases on top of ice boxes) across France injected a certain amount of unpredictability into Ligue 1’s 2014/15 edition which saw the league make positive strides, at least with regards to the entertainment factor. Leonardo Jardim, Hubert Fournier, Ghislain Printant and Willy Sagnol, to name a few, have all, in very short spaces of time, revolutionized their respective clubs’ reputations, for better or for worse. With such a vast array of tactical approaches, 2014/15 was the season during which Ligue 1 truly became the most ferociously volatile division in Europe. SC Bastia and Guingamp felled PSG, Lyon were dismantled by Nice at home and Marseille were embarrassed by Lorient. The lack of pan-club consistency made for frustrating viewing for hardcore fans, but enthralled the neutrals. As if 10 months of action-packed league football was not enough, French football has a way of making headlines, even during the off season. -

Ligue 1 2013/2014: Your Guide to the Season Ahead
Ligue 1 2013/2014: Your Guide to the Season Ahead Get French Football News A Note from the Editor: The transfer window begins to pick up pace as we head to its business end, the month of August. However, there is something that enthuses and excites me far more: football is back. As I look back on last season, in many ways, I wish we could merely repeat it. Whether it was PSG’s magical Champions League run, Saint Etienne’s monumental Coupe de la Ligue win or sitting there on a bleak November evening watching Reims’s utterly mundane goalless draw with Brest; the 2012/2013 campaign had it all and with some to spare. Undoubtedly, the majority of the footballing media will next season focus frustratingly on AS Monaco’s performances as they look to criticise and accuse them of ‘ruining football’. Frankly, it is an all too familiar stance that has been reiterated these past months, and Monaco have yet to kick a ball. Justly or unjustly so, Monaco will bring competition that will undeniably raise the quality of football in Ligue 1 and give the league a larger following worldwide. However, if there is one thing I want you to take away from the introduction to the Get French Football News Season Preview it is this: try and look past Monaco. Instead, observe what Philippe Montanier may achieve as he looks to revolutionise Rennes and turn them into a consistent European power; take an interest in the exceptional batch of young French talent that currently dominates Lyon’s squad; applaud the way in which Marseille have set about recruiting this summer and take heed of the way Lorient attempt to play and the exceptional example that President Loic Fery is setting in how to run a modern football club. -
Your Guide to the 2017/18 Ligue 1 Season Get French Football News a Note from Chief Features Writer, Eric Devin
Your Guide to the 2017/18 Ligue 1 Season Get French Football News A Note from Chief Features Writer, Eric Devin: So often the figure of fun in the recent past, as a product of Paris Saint-Germain’s financial hegemony, Ligue 1 seemed to have gained a measure of respect last season. Monaco’s performance in the Champions’ League in combination with their league title put lie to the impression that football in France was a monopoly, while Nice quietly had their best season in forty years under Lucien Favre. Even Lyon, once themselves the league’s perceived flat track bully, impressed, beating Roma and Besiktas on their way to the Europa League semifinal. Further down the table, Bastia gave the league an unnecessary black eye, but there were also pleasant surprises as well. Antoine Kombouaré and Pascal Dupraz had Guingamp and Toulouse scrapping at the fringes of the top six for most of the early season, while Nantes’ Sergio Conceição had Les Canaris flying high after his appointment. The league’s reputation for producing young talent continued unabated as well, with Kylian Mbappé, Ismaila Sarr and Malang Sarr all impressing before their twentieth birthdays. All told, 2016-17 was a strong season in France, even with Paris Saint-Germain’s embarrassing Champions’ League exit. This summer has seen the inevitable exodus of players, with Lyon and Monaco both losing several key components, but a surprising number of talents have chosen to stay in France, including Ismaila Sarr, (Metz to Rennes), Enzo Crivelli (Bordeaux to Angers) and Nicolas Pepe (Angers to Lille). -
