More consumers are now valuing the convenience, consistency, and the control they have over the self service technologies. However, despite the growing popularity of these technologies, hotel industries in Singapore have not embraced self service technologies in their day to day operations. Self service technologies present opportunities for hotels to improve on service standards, and the wide variety of technology applications available allow hotels to choose an application that suits the customers and the hotels needs. To enable hotels to seamlessly adopt self service technologies in the servicescape, this paper proposes a conceptual framework that systematically guides hoteliers through the decision process of In order to be able to shift into a more sustainable energy system, Singapore is investing in research regarding different technologies and systems so as to establish more sustainable energy solutions. Seeing how air-conditioning accounts for approximately 30 % of Singapore‟s total energy consumption, a feasibility study is being conducted on whether an integrated system using a thermally active building system (TABS) and desiccant evaporative cooling system (DECS) can replace the air-conditioning system. The question which is to be discussed in this thesis is whether solar and wind power can be financially feasible in Singapore and if they can be utilized in order to power the integrated system. The approaching model consists of a financial feasibility study of the different technologies and a theoretical test-bedding, where the suitability of the technologies to power the TABS and DECS is tested. The financial feasibility is estimated by calculating the payback period and using the net present value method. A model designed in a digital modeling software is used for the test-bedding. Measurements from a local weather station are used for estimating the solar radiance and wind speeds in Singapore.

While most of the published works are done in the Western and European countries, the trend in autism research is shifting towards the Asian continent recently. In this review, we aimed to highlight the current prevalence, diagnosis, treatment and research on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in Singapore and Malaysia. Based on database searches, we found that the awareness about autism among lay and professional public is higher in Singapore compared to Malaysia. The special education system and approach towards autism treatment is also different between both societies although the culture is similar and the geographic location is close. Main findings and implications were discussed in this review. The lack of study on autism prevalence in this part of the world commands a critical need for further research. Perhaps more collaborative work between both countries could be done to expand the knowledge in autism. Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a type of neurodevelopmental disorder affecting the mental, emotion, learning and memory of a person (McCary et al., 2012). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association, 2000), ASD is characterized by three features. Volume 8, Issue 2 November 2011 “Browsing Madness” and Global Sponsors of Literacy: The Politics and Discourse of Deterritorialized Reading Practices and Space in Singapore Kim Trager Bohley Indiana University-Purdue University, USA Abstract Drawing on empirical data collected from interviews, focus groups, surveys, and participant observation, this article explores the intersections between cultural globalization, transnational booksellers and print cultures in Singapore, placing the changing nature of textual practices and reading audiences within the “micropolitics of local/global interactions.” In doing this, the article considers how and why various sponsors of literacy in Singapore (local, global, corporate, and individual) attempted to propagate their ideologies of reading through affirmation and censure. More specifically, it is a case study of the well- known browsing controversy at Borders Bookstore Singapore, which was debated in The Straits Times, online, and elsewhere for almost a decade. In these forums, Borders employees, newspaper editors and “good patrons” censured “rough book browsers” for dog-earring magazines, clogging book aisles and failing to return magazines where they belong. In this way, practices and discourses surrounding the browsing debacle at Borders became "boundary drawing" activities that divided "good patrons"/"civilized behavior," and "a cosmopolitan mindset" from "bad patrons"/"uncivilized behavior" and "a provincial mindset." By engaging in this "discourse of difference," these social actors began to construct a cosmopolitan identity through negation that positioned them as sponsors of literacy. As with other cultural conflicts, the Borders browsing controversy became a site for the reworking of class and ethnic stereotypes, revealing how everyday media practices such as book browsing are tied to larger socio-economic structures and meta-narratives (e.g., survival = globalization).
