This quintessential English thatched cottage is a joy to behold, set back nicely in its grounds from a quiet country lane. “We were attracted by the traditional look of the cottage which had roses quite literally around the door,” the owners commented. ‘We love the fact that it’s set well back from the road and that there is plenty of parking.” Offering expansive farmland views to the rear and a charming rural village environment, this is a compelling family home. Fascinating History “The cottage was built around 1670; it’s timber-framed wattle and daub with brick gable ends and the traditional Norfolk reed thatch,” informed the owners. Part of the Elmham estate, the cottage was originally a smallholding sat in three acres. “The property was divided into two dwellings in the 18th century and in 1897 the cottage was sold by the estate of Lord Sondes as a single house.” Having passed through several owners, in 1975 the cottage was fully restored and modernised and, as the owners confirmed, “In 1979 a single-storey extension was added to the south end, fully in keeping. A large separate garage was also built.”

Special Family Home There is an abundance of wonderful character features in the cottage and the owners particularly like the spacious rooms and high, beamed ceilings. “The sitting room is really comfortable with its lovely open fireplace and French doors onto the rear terrace - this is one of our favourite rooms. The other would have to be the back (north) bedroom with its exposed beams; it has a really special feel about it. Also, the dining room with its fantastic inglenook fireplace has hosted many happy family events.”

Garden Of Eden “The garden is most attractive with three separate lawns; we’ve had such fun here over the years with extended family,” the owners continued. The garden is very private and backs onto open farmland, gifting relaxing field views and, of course, the famous big Norfolk skies. “We love our fruit trees – apple, apricot, pear and plum; we’ve had many large harvests of fruit and vegetables,” added the owners.

Wonderful Location “Brisley village is pleasant and very quiet. School Road has restricted access to through traffic,” noted the owners. Known throughout the county for its popular gastropub, The Bell, Brisley charms with its rural nature and traditional character. “There is a CofE primary school, an active village hall and a cricket club on the green; it’s a lovely place to call home. And in , which is only a couple of miles away, there are a large number of amenities, such as a convenience store, post office, tea room and GP surgery.” Further afield, the village is ideally situated to take advantage of the many delights that the county has to offer. “The coast is just a short drive away and yet it’s also quick and easy to get into Norwich; we find that you are never far from anywhere you want to go.”
