As I note elsewhere, the term often refers to the emergence of quantum computing, artificial intelligence, internet of things, machine learning, data analytics, big data, robotics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and the convergence of the digital, biological, and physical domains of life, and the digitalisation of communication, connectivity, and surveillance. The 2010s saw the maturation of technological innovations from previous decades and the emergence of several new ones. Perhaps the most ubiquitous was the explosion of social media networks, some of which were established in the decade before. It can be seen that the United States and China each have six on this list, underscoring the global dominance of the two countries in the emerging technologies of the 21st century. Veni Vidi Ascendi is the first of several annual compe- titions in the Northwest Collegiate Climbing Circuit (NC3). Western’s competition is the only one in the circuit that includes a dynamic movement event, in which climbers spring out 6 to 8 feet to grasp a fin- gertip hand-hold 15 feet above the mat. Only a few make it, and the ones that do get a cheer from the crowd, no matter what school they’re from.
