AROUND THE DIAMOND IN THE ABL OPENING WEEKEND EDITION 2/1/19 BIG STORY: Are you ready for some baseball? The day has finally arrived to break out the bats and gloves and play some ball. A few minor changes with game play on the Deep Charts and the Green Monster of Fenway Park is back in ABL Play. There was also major change with taxi team limitations getting dissolved. A few deadlines were added for each week as all trades must be submitted by Wednesday at 8 p.m. eastern and Free Agent picks up by Friday. There was also a change in the league’s makeup as two new teams joined the circuit and one team went inactive. Moving over to the D.H. American Division, is the 29 th edition of the Tallahassee Terriers managed by the “Legend” Don Allen Jr. Back filling in the National Division is the first year Clayton Steamships out of Clayton, N.Y. managed by Wayne Scott. Joining the ‘Ships to complete the National Division is the second expansion team in the Garden State Warriors based out of Montclair, N.J. and are managed by Bruce Keilin. Crown Heights made the most noise draft day as they owned several early round picks and wrapped up all their drafting in the 12th round. The class of the American Division early on is the Long Beach Island Starfish and their star-studded lineup. The 2018 Bambino Cup finalist Dexter Thunder Geese and playoff starved Tallahassee Terriers will chase the Starfish’ powerful lineup. In the National Division, Lenny's post draft rankings stacked the Crown Heights Kings as the earlier favorites. Titusville and the defending champion C-Bay Channel Cats are a few steps back in the chase for the division crown. LEGEND SPOTLIGHT: By Don Allen Jr. ABL Starting Pitchers according to the Legend The below information is something I came up if I controlled each team and their rotation. So you may ask how I came up with the formula. Well very easy everyone wants to pitch their ace as much as possible and there number 5 starter the least amount as possible. Now in years past it was simple with even amount of teams there was no bye each and every week. So everyone pitched their 1-5 starters the same amount. This year though we have 13 teams so every week there is a team not playing. Below you will see each team and then the numbers that follow are how many times they would be able to use each pitcher. The first number being their ace #1 the second number their #2 starter and so on. CBAY: 8, 7, 7, 7, 7 ORL: 8, 8, 7, 7, 6 TITUS: 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 CH: 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 CLAY: 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 GS: 8, 8, 7, 7, 6 TALL: 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 LBI: 8, 8, 7, 7, 6 DEX: 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 OCRA: 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 LAJO: 9, 7, 7, 7, 6 ALB: 8, 8, 8, 7, 5 EB: 8, 7, 7, 7, 7 Now as you can see not a whole lot change across the board every team gets to start their #1 8 times. La Jolla lucks out and gets to throw their #1 9 times. Albany lucks out as well by only having to throw their #5 starter only 5 times. Of course then there is the unlucky CBAY and East Bay are stuck having to throw their # 5 starter 7 times. So anyone complaining about the schedule. The guy creating it has to throw his worse starter more than anyone. I'm not saying anyone is but if it crossed your mine hopefully this will put it at ease. Now that we have that out of the way. Here is where the real fun begins. So if each team kept their rotation the same way by wanting to pitch their #1 starter as much as possible and #5 starter the least possible. Below is each team and how many times they will be facing an opponent's #1 starter the 2nd number being their #2 and so on. CBAY: 8, 8, 6, 8, 6 ORL: 9, 12, 6, 3, 6 TITUS: 7, 5, 10, 9, 5 CH: 6, 6, 10, 9, 5 CLAY: 12, 8, 5, 5, 6 GS: 8, 7, 6, 8, 7 TALL: 9, 7, 5, 6, 9 LBI: 6, 6, 9, 9, 6 DEX: 8, 10, 7, 5, 6 OCRA: 11, 7, 8, 5, 5 LAJO: 8, 6, 9, 8, 5 ALB: 7, 10, 8, 6, 5 EB: 6, 9, 9, 4, 8 Now as you can see from above vast change across the board due to a bye each week. So who lucked out and who didn’t get so lucky. Well will start with the unlucky first this time. Clayton welcome to the ABL and oh by the way your gonna face a team’s #1 starter 12 out of the 36 games you play that is 1 in every 3 games ouch! Ocracoke didn’t do so well either having to face #1 starter 11 times. Orlando has to face a team’s #1 and #2 starter 21 times more than any other team. Crown Heights, Titusville, Ocracoke, La Jolla and Albany will only face a team’s #5 starter 5 times throughout the season. So who got lucky well Crown Heights and LBI only have to face a team’s #1 and# 2 starters 12 times. East Bay will only face a team’s #1 6 times and gets to face a team’s #5 starter 8 times. Tallahassee got luck by facing a team’s #5 starter more than anyone 9 times throughout the season. Of course this does not account for injuries, suspension and any other craziness. Last bit of intel the starters across the board will have pitched a combined #1 105 games #2 101 games #3 98 games #4 85 games and #5 79 games. ABL SPOTLIGHT ARCHIVE: It's the Night Before Draft... ...and everyone wonders if Joe will oversleep. I hope his caretakers on the west coast make sure to wake him up. Maybe a nice cup of coffee? Energy drinks? Air horn? Whatever gets ya outta bed. Not like that privileged Marcello kid who gets to sleep to a normal hour and draft at 11am. But really, who sleeps tonight? I know there are certain managers that have their pre-draft traditions. Coop will sleep with his binder under his pillow tonight. Commish will make his draft decisions from the toilet the morning of draft. I've got my draft day outfit laid out. There's almost always a Cuse game on the day before.
