The 2010 hit animated movie Tangled, begins with a familiar start to other Disney movies, a narration. Flynn Ryder, the narrator (voiced by ), told the back story of

Rapunzel before the movie really begins. Ryder gives specific details into what will be important later in the movie.

Tangled follows the story of Princess (voiced by ) who, thanks to a special flower that her mother the queen ate during a difficult pregnancy, has magical and ever-growing hair with the power to heal the sick and injured. But it's only been used to keep her

Mother Gothel (), a deceitful old woman who kidnapped Rapunzel as a baby, looking young and beautiful forever. While locked away in a hidden tower, Rapunzel's deepest wish is to see the beautiful "stars" that light up the sky on her birthday every year, although they aren’t really stars. They are lanterns that the kingdom lets out for the lost princess: Rapunzel.

The narrator, also the thief named Flynn Ryder, discovers the tower that Rapunzel has been locked in while running away because he stole the lost princess’s crown. He climbs up and thinks he’s alone, but Rapunzel catches him and she keeps him trapped in her hair until he promises to take her to see the lights and get her back to the tower before returns from a three-day trip. In exchange, Rapunzel vows to return the crown that Flynn Ryder stole.

On their adventure, the two grow closer and closer. Mother Gothel, the overprotective hair keeper, finds out that Rapunzel left the tower and eventually makes a deal with Flynn's rivals. Gothel wants Rapunzel to realize the truth, the truth that Flynn is a thief and a liar, but

Rapunzel sees the good in him anyways. Mother Gothel always says, “Mother knows best,” but

Rapunzel finally stands up for herself and says that she's wrong about Flynn and wrong about everything. Gothel makes up a scheme to show that Flynn “ran away” and “abandoned” her when he got the crown after the light show on the boat. Gothel takes Rapunzel back to their tower and Rapunzel had this flag that had a sun on it, which was the symbol for the kingdom, and Rapunzel realized something, something important to the movie.

It's breathtaking to see that Disney can still create such a fantastic princess movie to rival its all-time greats in past and current years. In every movie produced, the princess has some sort of character and charm attached to her. In Tangled, Rapunzel is guileless, strong, beautiful, and so breathtakingly good that you can't help but weep with her when she thinks all hope is lost towards the end. The relationship between Rapunzel and Flynn is built on mutual respect and trust, something completely missing in many earlier Disney movies. Like no other, it's Flynn who nearly dies and requires Rapunzel to save him, which is another factor that makes this movie so unique. Tangled has it all, from lovable characters, fantastic songs, to a powerful message about how your life can change if other people believe in you and your dreams.
