Magbanua2 1Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology; 2Institute of Biology University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City 1101 Philippines 3Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science; and Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences and the Graduate School University of Santo Tomas, Manila 1015 Philippines Relatively limited information exists on Lake Wood’s limnology and ecology, an ancestral lake of the Subanens. Here, we provide a limnological characterization of the lake – exploring its physical, chemical, and biological features. The data on lake morphometry were gathered using an echosounder; lower depth water samples were collected using a Niskin water sampler for physicochemical analyses while surface water samples were collected at five sampling sites for phosphate (PO4) analysis; and zooplankton samples were collected at several depths through vertical towing in March–April 2019. Lake Wood, located at 320 m above sea level, has an extensive surface area covering 7.38 km2 with a maximum depth of 85 m. Lake water comes from rainfall, small rivers, and groundwater and empties into the Dumanquilas Bay via its only outlet – the Biswangan River. Land use of the lake is predominantly cultivated land. Moreover, based on the trophic state index (TSI), the lake’s current trophic status is eutrophic. During the study periods, thermocline and oxycline formed at 15 m below the surface of the lake. -

INTRODUCTION The Philippines, the world’s second largest archipelago after Indonesia, covers a land area of about 300,000 km2 [1]. It is one of the 17 megadiversity countries, which between themselves contain 70 to 80 percent of global biodiversity [2]. Philippine rainforest is home to more than 1130 terrestrial wildlife species (Table 1) and between 10,000-13,000 species of plants [3] so far recorded, of which more than half are found nowhere else in the world. As such, the Philippines has also been described as Galapagos times ten [4]. It is also one of 25 global biodiversity hotspots [5, 6] with more than 97 percent of its original forest cover lost [7, 8]. In fact more original forests were lost in the last 50 years of the 20th century than what was lost in the previous 450 years combined [9]. Yet more new species are still being discovered on these islands than any other areas on earth in recent times [e.g., see 10, 11] Table 1. This paper reports the first record of A. dorsalis in Lake Lanao, an ancient lake located in the island of Mindanao. Based on its very high abundance, and positive correlation between the total body length of females with lake dissolved nitrates, phosphates and chlorophyll a concentration, A. dorsalis has clearly established itself in the lake ecosystem and has benefitted in the steady increase in the lake’s nutrient load. Lake Lanao’s endemic Tropodiaptomus gigantoviger may be considered as another calanoid species to be displaced by A. dorsalis given that a thorough examination of plankton samples collected from Lake Lanao have not yielded individuals of T. gigantoviger. Basal sediments contain shells of Cerithiidae and the saline-tolerant diatom Diploneis indicating that this was an estuarine environment before becoming a freshwater lake after 6000 BP. Pollen analysis shows that submontane forests, characterized by Pinus pollen, underwent a major disturbance around 5000 years ago, recovering to previous levels by 1000 years ago. Charcoal as an indicator of fire is abundant throughout record, although the highest levels occur in the earlier part of the record, between 6500 and 5000 years ago. An aspect of the project was to examine whether there is evidence of land clearance and agricultural development in the region during the late Holocene. While a clear signal of human impact in the record remains equivocal, there appears to be a correspondence between submontane forest decline and mid-Holocene ocean data that depict warmer and possibly drier conditions for the region. -

Papa, [email protected] Abstract Despite the increasing interest in studying Cladocera and Copepoda in Philippine freshwaters, there is a need to update our knowledge on its taxonomy and distribution in highly urbanized areas, such as Metropolitan Manila. This paper presents an updated listing of freshwater microcrustaceans and their distribution in Metropolitan Manila, considering the continued deterioration of water quality and increased urbanization in many areas since the last comprehensive study on these taxa in 1950s. We collected water samples from 33 freshwater sites in Metropolitan Manila and 23 of which were found to contain microcrustacean zooplankton. A total of 13 species were identified including two new locality records for C. cornuta and D. dubium in Pasig River. All 8 cladocerans, we identified have already recorded in previous studies while 3 cyclopoid copepods are new records for Metropolitan Manila. -

Cultural tourism is one of the developing sectors in the tourism industry. As tourism is experiencing significant changes, expectation is set constantly in terms of the quality of the experience pursued by tourists. This study examined the relationship between authenticity and visitors’ experience. Mixed method research was used and the hypothesis was tested using Pearson r correlation. Questionnaire and interview were the instruments of the study. The study suggests that there is a significant relationship between authenticity and visitors’ experience, r (385)=.89, p>.01. The existing tourism plans and programs in the municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte includes marketing programs, economic, physical infrastructure and socio-cultural plans and programs for both the visitors and local people. Visitors’ Experience Enhancement Program (VEEP) was developed based on the results of the study to help improve the quality of visitors’ experiences in a cultural heritage site. There has been a movement towards increased specialization among visitors [4], and as studies show, cultural heritage is one of the determinants of travel [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11].
