The general purpose of the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship Fund is to aid and encourage painters and sculptors in the practice of their art, to associate them with the life of the University, and at the same time to foster an interest in the Arts within the University. CONDITIONS OF AWARD 1. The Fellowship shall be open to any man or woman normally resident in New Zealand who in the opinion of the Selection Committee: (a) has executed sufficient work as a painter or sculptor to show that they are possessed of some talent as such, and (b) is a serious artist who will be diligent in their endeavours to practice, improve and develop such talent, and (c) will benefit from holding of the Fellowship. 2. Applicants for the Fellowship need not possess a degree or diploma or have attained any particular educational standard or be a member of any art society or group of artists or of any other body. 3. Other qualifications and considerations between applicants for the award of the Fellowship being more or less equal, preference may be given to an applicant under the age of forty years. 4.   • The Kiosk: a History* & Project Logbook
    KIOSK: DIRECTORS’ COMMENTARY THE KIOSK: A HISTORY* & PROJECT LOGBOOK 2000-20 KIOSK MODEL/MAKE/SERIAL NO: A PUBLIC ART SITE RUN BY OBLIQUE AND TPR ABOUT THE KIOSK 20. Resembling a grey tardis, the Kiosk was a permanent public art site for temporary exhibitions. Situated on the busy pedestrian thoroughfare on the corner of High, Lichfield, and Manchester Streets, Kiosk provided a 24/7 venue for contemporary art. The Kiosk programme included local and international artists’ responses to the site and current issues. AN OBLIQUE TRUST INTIATIVE The Kiosk programme began in 2000 as an Oblique Trust initiative presented by Waho, supported by Creative Communities Christchurch, 60. and The Physics Room Trust. The Oblique Trust was a charitable trust established to initiate and co-ordinate site specific and public art projects. THE PHYSICS ROOM After curating a programme in 2002, The Physics Room took over the running of the Kiosk in May 2003. The Kiosk, a block away from the gallery on Tuam 63. Street also acted as a street level link to The Physics Room. THE EARTHQUAKES In 2010, the Kiosk was removed to make way for new tram tracks and was subsequently lost in the chaos of 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.     STATEMENT OF COLLECTION SIGNIFICANCE For nearly one hundred years the Sarjeant Gallery, on behalf of the people of Wanganui, has been studiously building its collections of fine art and applied art objects. With a collection now numbering approximately 5,500 pieces, in all media, it is unrivalled in regional New Zealand and can be viewed in similar terms to the major municipal collections of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Collection is significant in its inception and it is nationally significant in its size and depth of content. Housed within one of the finest purpose-built art galleries in the country, the building and the Collection are inextricably linked to one another in terms of their importance to our national patrimony, hence the reason for our application to the Ministry of Culture & Heritage’s Regional Museums Fund. SARJEANT GALLERY HISTORY Henry Sarjeant’s will provided for the establishment and maintenance of a Fine Arts Gallery for the people of the Borough of Wanganui and for his wife Ellen to be involved in its development and operation. Once the prominent central Queens Park siting was decided on the Mayor, Mr C.A. McKay (the driving force behind the development) contracted Mr Hurst Seager to be the assessor of a planned architectural design competition. He was a prominent Christchurch architect who had just published a book on research into International Natural Lighting Systems. From the 33 original submissions one of the entries made by the firm of Anscombe from Dunedin was chosen as the successful design. After selection it was discovered that a student Donald Hosie had prepared the design and he was about to be drafted to join the armed forces at the front in France.
