2015 Annual Report Mission the Catholic Foundation Will Encourage Financial Stewardship and Generosity by Providing a Faith-Based Avenue for Giving 2015 Annual Report Mission The Catholic Foundation will encourage financial stewardship and generosity by providing a faith-based avenue for giving. Guiding Principles In all we do — We will be stewardship-minded. We are accountable to our donors. We will be faithful to our Church’s mission. Vision We will be known and trusted throughout our diocese as the preferred faith-based foundation for giving. 2 Table of Contents 4 Bishop’s Message 5 President & Executive Director’s Message 6 Bishop’s Appeal 7 World Mission Services 8 Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help 9 Seminarian Collection 10 Students Attend March for Life in Washington D.C. 11 Emmaus Candidates Learn the Ministry of Leading Prayer 12-32 Fund Descriptions 33 Areas of Impact and Types of Funds Charts 34 Planned Giving 35 Board of Directors 36-40 Distributions 41 Distributions from Funds and Cumulative Growth Charts 42 Condensed Statement of Financial Position and Condensed Statement of Activities 43 Legacy Society 44-45 Levels of Giving 46 Circle of Hope 47 Staff 3 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Pope Francis has reflected on the best way for us to know Jesus, describing it as “the most important work of our lives.” People accomplish many important works in their life…things like raising a family or making a mark in the professional world. Yes, these are important. But Jesus provides the foundation for everything we do. Pope Francis explains we must “pray to Him, celebrate Him, and imitate Him.” In other words, talk to Him, participate in Mass, and act as He would. Many people choose to act like Christ by leaving a legacy. You might ask, “How do I want to be remembered? Who and what do I value most?” We are richly blessed here in northeastern Wisconsin. There are many faith-filled people who choose to leave a legacy through the Catholic Foundation to benefit their parish or favorite diocesan ministry. The Catholic Foundation plays an important role in keeping the ministries and services of our diocese alive. Gifts to the Foundation help fund religious education programs and Catholic schools and help young people learn about Jesus. Several Foundation endowments support our seminarians, and others help our evangelization efforts. Thank you for supporting the mission of our Church through your generous gifts, what an incredible blessing! If you would like to leave a legacy, call Cindi or Josh at the Catholic Foundation. May the Lord bless you and your loved ones, and reward you for your deep faith. Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend David Ricken, DD, JCL Bishop of Green Bay Catholic Foundation 2015 Annual Report Catholic Foundation 2015 Annual Report 4 Dear Friends, Blessed Mother Teresa touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. She fought tirelessly to help people living in the slums of India, and ultimately founded the Missionaries of Charity which now reaches across the globe. There is a tendency to associate legacy with greatness. We can’t all become Mother Teresa, but we can use her legacy as inspiration to build our own. One portion of your legacy likely includes providing for your loved ones in your will or living trust. Many people also place value in their faith, and the ministries and services of our Church. Have you considered supporting the Church and your favorite ministries long after you’re gone? We see many people leaving a bequest to their parish, to an endowment for religious education, or to a fund that reaches out to the poor. Since 1997, the Catholic Foundation has grown to $85 million, and distributed more than $29 million to Catholic schools, parishes and organizations. These distributions are possible because many people leave bequests of all sizes…it is the combined effort of thousands of people, not simply a few. Become part of our continued legacy, and leave a legacy of your own. As you page through this report, you might find just the fund that touches your heart. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to create your own endowment that can share the light of Christ forever. Call me to discuss how you would like to leave your legacy. Many thanks to all of our friends. God’s blessing on you and those you love! Sincerely, Paul Schneider Cindi K. Brawner President Executive Director Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. – Blessed Mother Teresa “ ” 5 Bishop’s Appeal Year after year, we witness the tremendous care people extend to others through gifts to the Bishop’s Appeal. Thanks to funding provided through the Appeal, people like Deacon Ernesto Gonzalez are trained and formed in the diaconate, engaged couples attend Marriage Preparation classes, and the faith journey of young adults is inspired through Encounter worship sessions. The Bishop’s Appeal is an annual fundraising campaign conducted by the Catholic Foundation to benefit the ministries and services of the Diocese of Green Bay. These ministries help form and train lay ministers, and supports Catholic schools and religious education. Through the generosity of the people of northeastern Wisconsin, the 2015 Bishop’s Appeal raised more than $5.6 million. Their living conditions are primitive. There is no running water, electricity is scarce, and latrines are holes in the ground. Fortunately, they are cared for by the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, who continually improve their lives. During the Missionary Cooperation Appeal they raised $9,000 to install a water collection system at the motherhouse. Through the Projects Available Booklet, they raise funds to farm chickens and pigs. The World Missions office provides support to many missionaries Catholic Foundation 2015 Annual Report across the globe through other activities such as Catholic Relief Services, and the Pontifical Mission Societies. “We are so grateful for the help we have received from the Diocese of Green Bay.” — Sr. Juliet, Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. 7 Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help Thousands of people come to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion, Wisconsin every year to feel the love of our Blessed Mother Mary. Pilgrims have shared stories of healing and conversion at the Shrine since 1859, when the Blessed Mother first appeared to young Adele Brise. The Shrine is supported by the generosity of faith-filled people from around the country. They receive fundraising assistance from the Catholic Foundation. In addition, the Foundation works with friends of the Shrine to establish endowments, and invites people to remember the Shrine in their will. The Holy Mother did not appear in a crowded city or to people of wealth and power. Instead, she appeared to “an unlikely person in an unlikely place. In doing so, she made it clear to all the world that there is no one anywhere who is beyond the reach of God’s generous love. – Bishop David Ricken 8 ” Seminarian Collection The Seminarian Collection invites the people of our diocese to participate in the education and formation of our future priests. Our seminarians are devoted men of faith who will nourish God’s people with His word, renew the Church with His sacraments, and lead His people in love. Catholic Foundation 2015 Annual Report Newly ordained priest Fr. Edward Looney is grateful for the Seminarian Collection. The Seminarian Collection provides funding for tuition, room and board, insurance, the Vocations department and other expenses. In 2014, the Collection raised more than $765,000. Seminarians also receive support through several Catholic Foundation endowments. “One of the best things about being a priest is being a part of other people’s lives and accompanying them as they encounter God.” – Father Edward Looney 9 Students Attend March for Life in Washington D.C. Imagine spending 17 hours on a bus crammed full of students in the middle of winter. The bus is buzzing with conversation and brimming with excitement. These proud students will stand before the nation voicing their opinions about the value of life. Torey Gostas attended her fifth annual March for Life in January 2015. She is one of twelve diocesan Core Team Leaders to oversee 120 high school students attending the pilgrimage. “I believe we are the generation that will change Each trip has the hearts of people in this world, and overturn Roe v. It inspires us to be better and challenges us to do more. The Bible is filled with stories of people who experienced the uncertainty of change and its ultimate joys. In Genesis, Abraham left his family, home and all things familiar to him to live in an unknown foreign country. Because of his willingness to listen to God and to change, he was given many descendants and is known to us as the father to all who have faith. This past year has been a year of change for the Catholic Foundation.
