This incredibly intricate creation is a must- see art experience for visitors from near and far from now until October of this year. Along with the Intercontinental Hotel and 125 High Street, the 28th floor of One International Place serves as one of the anchor points for the approximately one-ton structure. Janet Echelman is known for her soft, billowing sculptures the scale of © Melissa Henry buildings that respond to the forces of nature — wind, water and light — and become inviting focal points for civic life. Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, Echelman was named an Architectural Digest Innovator for “changing the very essence of urban spaces.” Echelman’s whimsical work is a monumentally-scaled, knotted-fiber sculpture suspended hundreds of feet over the central section of the Greenway. The enormous size of the installation assures that the artwork can be seen from many directions, both up close and far away. November 6 NStar Lighting Fair Do Your Part! Waste, Water, and Energy-Saving Tips for the Office In connection with our overall mission of energy reduction please help us reduce International Place’s environmental footprint by producing less trash, and by using energy and water more efficiently in the office. Collectively, seemingly small actions can make a big contribution toward slowing climate change. You can begin helping by following these simple, no- and low-cost tips: • Immediately alert building managers to any leaky or broken faucets or running toilets, so they can be promptly fixed. One faucet that leaks one drop per second can waste 2,700 gallons of water per year, and a leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water every day. • Purchase only ENERGY STAR-qualified office equipment, which uses 30-75% less energy than typical equipment. Talk to your office manager about making this a standard policy for your company. • Light office space only when necessary. Use only daylight whenever it is sufficient, and turn off lights in offices and conference rooms that are not occupied. • Blocked vents make ventilation systems work harder and waste energy. Clear the areas near vents of furniture, file cabinets, and stacks of paper. • Dress appropriately for the season. The temperature maintained in the office is lower in the winter than in the summer. This reduces the amount of energy required for heating and cooling, and enhances employee comfort. Remembrances and Thank Yous By Alan Cotler, W’72, WG’74 When I told Mrs. Spitzer, my English teacher at Flushing High in Queens, I was going to Penn her eyes welled up and she said nothing. She just smiled. There were 1,100 kids in my graduating class. I was the only one going to an Ivy. And if I had not been recruited to play basketball I may have gone to Queens College. I was a student with academic friends and an athlete with jock friends. My idols were Bill Bradley and Mickey Mantle. My teams were the Yanks, the New York football Giants, the Rangers and the Knicks, and, 47 years later, they are still my teams. My older cousin Jill was the first in my immediate and extended family to go to college (Queens). I had received virtually no guidance about college and how life was about to change for me in Philadelphia. I was on my own. I wanted to get to campus a week before everyone. I wanted the best bed in 318 Magee in the Lower Quad. Steve Bilsky, one of Penn’s starting guards at the time who later was Penn’s AD for 25 years and who helped recruit me, had that room the year before, and said it was THE best room in the Quad --- a large room on the 3rd floor, looked out on the entire quad, you could see who was coming and going from every direction, and it had lots of light. It was the control tower of the Lower Quad.

For the third time, our neighborhood community arrived for their COVID-19 vaccine shots. On May 14, we Tsurprised when the van arrived from the Whittier Street Health Center, Dorchester, MA - a contingent of Army and Air Force medical personnel exited the vehicle! (Being an Air Force brat all my life, I saluted!) This group of soldiers belong to a medical unit stationed at Otis Air Base on Cape Cod that was formed to assist the Commonwealth in its battle against the virus. The Literacy Connection has been working with Heloisa Galvao, Director of the Brazilian Women's Group in Brighton, MA. Heloisa has been able to contact the medical staff needed and The Literacy Connection has been able to provide the space and protocals needed to follow all COVID-19 procedures. This is one of many examples of the commitment and collaboration among programs here in the Allston-Brighton Community. We are grateful to be an active member of this community. We can't do all this alone. I am exceedingly grateful to these pandemic angels who have graciously welcomed nervous older visitors, cranky children (placated with lollipops) and the younger generation. Thank you to Sisters Jo Perico, Rosemary Brennan, Carlotta Gilarde, Elizabeth Toomey, Kay Decker, Gail Donohue, Kathy Berube, Mary Rita Grady,Cathy Mozzicato as well as CSJ employee Chi Leung.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • Should Super-Teams Be Allowed in the NBA? Hoopers Journal Author: Peter Pellegrino Date of Publication: 3.30.21
Should Super-Teams Be Allowed in the NBA? Hoopers Journal Author: Peter Pellegrino Date of Publication: 3.30.21 After the recent uproar of the NBA’s most talented players joining forces, the question needs to be asked: Should Super-Teams Be Allowed in the NBA? News: For those who have not yet heard the news, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets have both bought out and traded for multiple all star talents. The defending champion Lakers, who previously had Lebron James and Anthony Davis as the prime talent on their roster, bought out the two-time all star Andre Drummond. Drummond led the league in rebounds in the 2016, 2018-2020 seasons and was the number one player on the Detroit Pistons for the majority of his career. The recent player addition changes the potential Laker starting lineup to Dennis Schroeder, Contavious Caldwell-Pope, Lebron James, Anthony Davis, and Andre Drummond. Many fans view this lineup as an overwhelming challenge to almost any team that faces them. “It’s all about competition.. I love competition.. There’s this culture where everyone wants to join one another, and it goes against everything that I’m about,” shouts analyst Stephen A. Smith. The true level of competition in the NBA has undoubtedly lessened over the years, and it’s evidence correlation with the burst of super-teams has been clear ever since the 2017 Golden State Warriors. The superstar talent on the Brooklyn Nets has also been tremendous even before recent alterations were made. Early in the 2020-21 season, nine time all-star, three time scoring leader, three time field goal leader, and previous league MVP joined former champions Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
