Women provide legitimacy to the political projects of the nation in particular social and historical contexts. This article focuses on the gendered symbolization of the nation through the rhetoric of the 'motherland' and the manipulation of this rhetoric in the context of national struggle in Bangladesh. I show the ways in which the visual representation of this 'motherland' as fertile countryside, and its idealization primarily through rural landscapes has enabled a crystallization of essentialist gender roles for women. This article is particularly interested in how these images had to be reconciled with the subjectivities of women raped during the Bangladesh Liberation War (Muktijuddho) and the role of the aestheticizing sensibilities of Bangladesh's middle class in that process. PART- III BENGAL Being a distant province, Bengal had always been a problematic province for the Delhi Sultanate. Though Bengal was annexed to the Delhi Sultanate, a number of times it gained independence. Bengal was the eastern most province of the Delhi Sultanate. Long distance, uncomfortable climate, poor means of transport and communication made it difficult for the Sultans of Delhi to control the province of Bengal. Bakhtiyar Khilji, one of the military commanders of the Muhammad of Ghur was the first Muslim invader who annexed Bengal and Bihar by over throwing the Sena dynasty of Bengal. After his death his successors declared independence. Later Balban, the Sultan of Delhi brought Bengal under the control of Delhi Sultanate and appointed his son Bughra Khan as the Governor of Bengal. But soon after the death of Balban his son declared Bengal as an independence province. In order to solve the problems of the province of Bengal Ghyasuddin Tughlaq divided the Bengal province into three administrative units-Lakhnauti, Satgaon, Sonargaon. The problems of the Bengal province continued after finally Bengal emerged as an independent regional state in the 14th century. The history of Bengal entered a new phase when Haji-Shamsh-ud-din Ilyas khan founded a new dynasty, the Ilyas Shahi dynasty which ruled for around 125 years up to 1538 though in phases. Haji-Shamsh-ud-din Ilyas khan unified the independent kingdom of Bengal. Besides he made incursions into Nepal and Orissa. -

Bangladesh Liberation War, 1971 By: Alburuj Razzaq Rahman 9th Grade, Metro High School, Columbus, Ohio The Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 was for independence from Pakistan. India and Pakistan got independence from the British rule in 1947. Pakistan was formed for the Muslims and India had a majority of Hindus. Pakistan had two parts, East and West, which were separated by about 1,000 miles. East Pakistan was mainly the eastern part of the province of Bengal. The capital of Pakistan was Karachi in West Pakistan and was moved to Islamabad in 1958. However, due to discrimination in economy and ruling powers against them, the East Pakistanis vigorously protested and declared independence on March 26, 1971 under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But during the year prior to that, to suppress the unrest in East Pakistan, the Pakistani government sent troops to East Pakistan and unleashed a massacre. And thus, the war for liberation commenced. The Reasons for war Both East and West Pakistan remained united because of their religion, Islam. West Pakistan had 97% Muslims and East Pakistanis had 85% Muslims. However, there were several significant reasons that caused the East Pakistani people to fight for their independence. West Pakistan had four provinces: Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and the North-West Frontier. The fifth province was East Pakistan. Having control over the provinces, the West used up more resources than the East. Between 1948 and 1960, East Pakistan made 70% of all of Pakistan's exports, while it only received 25% of imported money. In 1948, East Pakistan had 11 fabric mills while the West had nine. -

Transborder TheorIes and ParadIgms In EthnomusIcological StudIes of Folk MusIc: VIsIons for Mo Lam in Mainland Southeast Asia ThIs talk explores the nature and IdentIty of tradItIonal musIc, prIncIpally khaen musIc and lam performIng arts In northeastern ThaIland (Isan) and Laos. Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. These became his main informants. -

While supervising their work in the districts, the ATI faculty has found that in the majority of cases the probationers do not maintain their diaries properly, although these are intended to be records of the details of the training they undergo so that superior officers can check whether they have assimilated the proper lessons from the exposure in the field. During interactions with their Counsellors in the ATI, the trainees have complained that they are handicapped by not having an example to follow. A similar handicap has been reported regarding writing reports of enquiries assigned to probationers in the district. In view of this feedback, the ATI is publishing the diary I maintained in detail as probationer in Malda in 1972, trusting that it will provide civil service probationers with an example of how a training diary can be maintained. We were supposed to send the National Academy of Administration an official training diary and also maintain a personal one. -

Early Medieval Archaeology of a Region: Durgapur-Asansol, West Bengal, India (c. 900 to 1400 CE) Rupendra Kumar Chattopadhyay1 Arkaprava Sarkar Abstract: The work is a result of our preliminary survey of archaeological assemblages mainly in form of sculptural and structural remains from the modern district of Paschim Bardhaman (Durgapur-Asansol) in West Bengal. The investigation also incorporates all the relevant data to evaluate early mediaeval remains from a historical perspective. The synthesized database contributed further in the recognition of spatial units of the region concerned to interpret ideological bearing and the development of socio-political structure in a given cultural framework. The presence of Jain, Buddhist and Brahmanical mode of appreciation associated with our findings is also studied here in order to highlight the changing context of a settlement character. Key words: Chhotanagpur Plateau, Bhum, Temple, Saivism, Saktism The location of Durgapur and Asansol region, roughly between 23º25' and 23º53'N and 86º48' and 87º32'E in the modern district of Burdwan in West Bengal, has always appeared to me for several reasons crucial to an understanding of the regional history and archaeology of eastern India. On one hand, this rolling track consisting of different geomorphological features, at a micro level, is essentially an extension of Chhotanagpur plateau (situated at the Bihar-Bengal border). At the same time, the territory lies in the middle of the Damodar-Ajay basin which extends eastwards into the fertile plain of the lower Gangetic valley. Interestingly, except towards the east the region is bounded by rivers on all the three other sides: on the west and south the rivers Barakar and Damodar form its boundaries whereas the river Ajay and its tributaries mark the boundary of the north and the north-east. -

Thesis Advisor: Diana M. Owen, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Bangladesh is one of the few nations where living citizens can recall being subjects of three different countries, all within one lifetime. Additionally, it is the only nation founded in pursuit of linguistic recognition. This non-traditional study explores the manner in which collective memory is used in nation building, the formation of Bengali identity and the evolution of this identity in the face of political upheaval, war, and for some, eventual migration. By examining the identity politics and cultural implications of establishing collective memory, this project analyzes the pivotal role played by the concept of “imagined communities” (Anderson, 1983) – the idea that nations are socially constructed by constituents who perceive themselves as a group. Using a triangulation of existing literature, a content analysis of era-specific political rhetoric and collected oral histories, this study further examines the arbitrary lines drawn across the former Indian subcontinent, establishing such imagined communities and effectively rendering millions as prisoners of geography. The timeline for this longitudinal study includes: the end of the British Raj, the Partition of 1947, the Bengali Language Movement, and the Bangladeshi Liberation War of 1971, moving onwards into the twenty-first century. -
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (Bengali: ; 17 শখ মুিজবুর রহমান Bangabandhu March 1920 – 15 August 1975), shortened as Sheikh Mujib or just Mujib, was a Bangladeshi politician and statesman. He is called the ববু "Father of the Nation" in Bangladesh. He served as the first Sheikh Mujibur Rahman President of Bangladesh and later as the Prime Minister of শখ মুিজবুর রহমান Bangladesh from 17 April 1971 until his assassination on 15 August 1975.[1] He is considered to be the driving force behind the independence of Bangladesh. He is popularly dubbed with the title of "Bangabandhu" (Bôngobondhu "Friend of Bengal") by the people of Bangladesh. He became a leading figure in and eventually the leader of the Awami League, founded in 1949 as an East Pakistan–based political party in Pakistan. Mujib is credited as an important figure in efforts to gain political autonomy for East Pakistan and later as the central figure behind the Bangladesh Liberation Movement and the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Thus, he is regarded "Jatir Janak" or "Jatir Pita" (Jatir Jônok or Jatir Pita, both meaning "Father of the Nation") of Bangladesh. His daughter Sheikh Hasina is the current leader of the Awami League and also the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. An initial advocate of democracy and socialism, Mujib rose to the ranks of the Awami League and East Pakistani politics as a charismatic and forceful orator. He became popular for his opposition to the ethnic and institutional discrimination of Bengalis 1st President of Bangladesh in Pakistan, who comprised the majority of the state's population. -

Criminal Law Forum Ó Springer 2010 DOI 10.1007/s10609-010-9119-8 SUZANNAH LINTON* COMPLETING THE CIRCLE: ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE CRIMES OF THE 1971 BANGLADESH WAR OF LIBERATION I INTRODUCTION There are many policy issues that need to be considered when a country and its people start to deal with horrors that are 39 years old. The trial process is a critical part of that, but it is not the only issue to deal with. It is essential for Bangladesh to develop a comprehensive, coherent and principled strategy for dealing with its past. It has not done that yet. The country is at a critical juncture, and it falls on the government to seize the opportunity to make the most of a process of accountability. Any trial process, especially of such a charged matter as the crimes of the liberation war, must meet international standards in order to have any legitimacy, honour the victims and provide some kind of redress to survivors. But that is not enough. After 38 years, the damage to the fabric of society is immense, and a properly conducted trial process opens a window of opportunity to repair some of the harm. The gov- ernment must respond appropriately. My purpose in this paper is not to address the important wider issues of how Bangladesh should deal with the legacies of its past. I wish to focus on the key legal issues arising out of the Awami League government’s avowed determination to investigate, prosecute and punish alleged criminals under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973 As Amended. -

Mail Id: [email protected] Abstract Ramanarayan Tarkaratna (1822- 1886) was a predecessor of the great figure of Bangla as well as of Indian literature(s) Michael Madhusudan Dutt; though nearly forgotten at present, once Ramanarayan was an eminent and prominent personality of the Bangla theatrical space. I would like to consider him as the guiding figure of realistic poetics of Bangla theatre. In 1854, his play Kulinkulasarbaswa dawned on the new age of Bangla theatre. The play is the first original Bangla play to be staged; it also has the merit of being the first-ever original Bangla play dealing with the serious social evils such as Kulin system of the Bengal Brahminism enforced by King Ballala Sena of the Sena Dynasty, and also polygamous ventures undertaken by Brahmin males. With these primary problems at stake, the play also deals with related issues such as education for women, women and society, and marriage. The composition and enactment of the play, Kulinkulasarbaswa, successfully began a new theatrical movement with a progressive outlook and inclusive nature. Ramanarayan, as a playwright, stands as the bridge between the olden forms of Sanskrit drama, and various folk practices (like jatra, palagan, etc) and the youthful arrival of the western theatrical practices, aesthetics and dramaturgy.
