Juveniles of O. niloticus were offered to three native predator species (Salminus brasiliensis, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, and Brycon orbignyanus) in 2,000-L tanks with four levels of habitat complexity (0%, 50%, 100% and RD (rocks and driftwood)). Predator efficiency was more variable among species (S. brasiliensis consumed 86.6% of the prey, P. corruscans 22.5% and B. orbignyanus 18.3%) than among levels of habitat complexity, and S. brasiliensis was faster than the others in detecting and consuming the prey. The higher predatory efficiency observed for S. brasiliensis can be partially explained by its more aggressive behavior (it fed earlier and for longer) and its presence in the surface layer. Here, the presence of predators led to O. niloticus juveniles spending more time at the surface or remaining in schools to coexist at the bottom with the predators, as expected for cichlids under predatory pressure in natural environments. Our results suggest that preserving and restoring populations of S. brasiliensis (and also to some extent P. corruscans and B. orbignyanus) might help to control O. niloticus in the Paraná River basin. As relações predador-presa entre alevinos de Tilápia-do-Nilo Oreochromis niloticus e espécies de peixes nativos da bacia do rio Paraná, Brasil, foram examinadas experimentalmente. Dez alevinos de O. niloticus foram oferecidos a três espécies nativas de predadores (Salminus brasiliensis, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans e Brycon orbignyanus) em tanques de 2000L com quatro níveis de complexidade ambiental (0%, 50%, 100% e RD (rochas e galhos)). A eficiência predatória foi mais variável entre espécies (S. brasiliensis consumiu 86,6%, P. corruscans 22,5% e B. orbignyanus 18,3% dos alevinos) do que para complexidade ambiental, e S. brasiliensis foi mais rápido do que os outros em detectar e consumir a presa. A eficiência predatória de S. brasiliensis pode ser parcialmente explicada pelo seu comportamento mais agressivo (alimentou-se mais cedo e por mais tempo de experimento) e pela presença na área de superfície. A presença de predadores levou os alevinos de O. niloticus a passar mais tempo na superfície ou formar cardume para coexistir no fundo com os predadores, como o esperado para ciclídeos sob pressão predatória no campo. Nossos resultados sugerem que preservar e restaurar as populações de S. brasiliensis (principalmente, mas também P. corruscans e B. orbignyanus) podem ajudar no controle de O. niloticus na bacia do rio Paraná. The sampling programme resulted in 202 interviews with old residents and fishermen at 167 different sampling sites in the major rivers of the basin. Interviewees were asked whether these fish species were present in the nearby river segment, recently or in the past. The average age of respondents was 56 years, and the great majority had resided for more than 30 years in the area where they were interviewed. 3. Fish distribution patterns were modelled using altitude and basin area as environmental descriptors. This is the case for the Bryconidae. Various studies have proposed that this family (considered a subfamily by some authors) may be composed of different genera. However, until now, no phylogenetic study of all putative genera has been conducted. Results: In the present study, we analyzed 27 species (46 specimens) of all currently recognized genera of the Bryconidae (ingroup) and 208 species representing all other families and most genera of the Characiformes (outgroup). Five genes were sequenced: 16SrRNA, Cytochrome b, recombination activating gene 1 and 2 and myosin heavy chain 6 cardiac muscle. The final matrix contained 4699 bp and was analyzed by maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses. The results show that the Bryconidae, composed of Brycon, Chilobrycon, Henochilus and Salminus, is monophyletic and is the sister group of Gasteropelecidae + Triportheidae. However, the genus Brycon is polyphyletic. Fossil studies suggest that the family originated approximately 47 million years ago (Ma) and that one of the two main lineages persisted only in trans-Andean rivers, including Central American rivers, suggesting a much older origin of Mesoamerican ichthyofauna than previously accepted.

A subsample of 25 fish was radio-tagged. Released juveniles displayed a density dependent dispersal pattern. During the first ten days mean covered distance of tagged batch 1 individuals (low density) was approximately 24 m d-1, while batch 2 individuals (high density) moved 296 m d-1. Activity of batch 1 fish increased after the release of batch 2 and remained high (459 m d-1) until 90 days. Activity of batch 2 fish during this period was in same range. After this period, activity levels of both batches decreased to about 60 m d-1. Increased movements in higher density condition are seen as a result of interspecific competition. The mean covered distances per day remained high until stocked individuals become established in their new habitat. Sixteen females randomly chosen were induced with pituitary extract and allocated in two groups; the first, in which oocytes were manually extruded and the second group, females were allowed to naturally spaw. Blood samples were collected for glucose, cortisol and hematocrit determinations as well as for red blood cells and white blood cells smears evaluations. A control group had its blood collected before hormonal induction. Fertilization rate was 40.6 and 91.7% for extruded and semi-natural methods, respectively, and the survival rate was higher in semi-natural groups. Both experimental groups showed higher glucose and cortisol levels compared to control group. The results for hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and erythrocytes numbers did not differ among groups. Extruded and semi- natural procedures elevated monocytes percentage.

  • Age, Growth, Mortality and Yield Per Recruit of the Dourado Salminus Brasiliensis, Corumbá Reservoir, Goiás State, Brazil

Samplings were carried out monthly in Corumbá Reservoir and its main tributaries (Goiás State) from March 1998 to February 1999 using gillnets. After one year of impound- ment, age was estimated from scales and the maximum number of rings was six for males and five for females. Rings are formed annually in May and June. The asymptotic length and growth rate for males and females were 37.1 cm and 0.77 and 56.6 cm and 0.52, respectively. A dominance of juveniles was verified in the reservoir and its tributaries. The instantaneous total mortality rate (Z) was 1.59 and the annual total mortality rate (A) was 79.6%. The highest yield per recruit (1200g) and the highest average weight (1900g) were obtained in simulations with low values of fishing (F) and natural (M) mortalities. Based on the above information we describe the Corumbá Reservoir impoundment has influenced the growth of the dourado. As regards this study, we recommend that the fishing effort not be applied during the trophic upsurge period and that the monitoring of the dourado assemblage continue. Fishery programs management for this species should be carried out with subsequent moni- toring involving efficient communication, realistic practices and involvement of fisher organizations.

This paper aims to provide a list of these names used for freshwater fishes from Argentina. All listed species have been reported from localities in Argentina, some regardless the fact that by our actual knowledge their distribution in this country might be doubtful. Years of birth and death could be taken mainly from obituaries, whereas those of living persons or publicly unknown ones are hard to find and missing in some accounts. Although the real existence of some persons from ancient Greek mythology might not be proven they have been included here, while the names of indigenous tribes and spirits are not. Larvae were fed on natural food from ponds supplemented with a commercial ration (40% crude protein), and for 12 days fish samples were taken daily in the morning and in the afternoon from each pond to analyze the food items present in the diet. Zooplankton available in the environment was also analyzed. Feeding was intensive since 94% of the larvae guts examined contained food. Since the commercial diet was not found in the dorado guts, the natural diet dominated the artificial food, but the cannibalistic behavior typically found in laboratory conditions was not observed. Insect larvae and cladocerans were the main prey items found in the gut of the larvae. In fish ponds dorado larvae can be considered a generalist feeder, since small amounts of different food items were consumed, but they tend to specialize in some items, according to their developmental stage.
