I want to introduce you to someone special. That someone is YOU! It is easy to find your "inner artist." The ability to be creative is every person's birthright, not a special talent reserved for a few. The gift is there, to be exposed, using simple tools and techniques.

The class will briefly cover the basics for creating beautiful art starting with proper seated body position and upper arm and hand function allowing freedom of motion, creating beautiful line quality. After doing warm-up exercises, participants will use their own intuitive inclinations to develop and expand the drawing exercise with colored pencils. Discussion and questions can be shared at the end of this one and one-half hour lesson.

Participants will need to bring a sharpened pencil. Paper and colored pencils will be provided. A reference manual "Simple Lines Make a Difference" will also be offered for a fee of $10 (payable

3 at the time of the course) to anyone interested in expanding the experience of creating art through line and color on their own at home.

ML-52-EXT Introduction to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy Instructor: Ms. Lauren McNaughten Tuesday, June 8, 2021 10:00 am - 11:00 am Hostetter Enrichment Center I, Messiah Village Enrollment limit: 23 Fee: $10.00

This course will introduce participants to the natural health alternatives of essential oils, sometimes referred to as aromatherapy. In this course, participants will learn how essential oils interact with the body to provide physical and emotional support. Essential oils are present in products that we already use every day ranging from chewing gum to household cleaners. There are different levels of use of essential oil – flavoring, perfuming, and therapeutic use. In this class, we will focus on the safe, therapeutic use.

*Note: Some individuals may have reactions to fragrances due to the synthetic (man-made in a lab) chemicals that are added as enhancers. During this class, we will only be using pure essential oils – free from man-made chemicals.

Participants will have the opportunity to purchase a roller bottle of essential oil for $10.00 payable at time of class.

This class is designed for those who want to learn how to take more interesting pictures of their family and friends as well as their travels and memories. This class will not require any special equipment or exotic locations. It is aimed at the person who uses a point-and-shoot camera or a smartphone, and wants to learn how to get more interesting pictures.

The presentation will uncover basic techniques and principles of good composition. One goal is to develop a photo-eye to be able to “see” the end result and to take note of dangers to avoid.

In this class we will learn about the four elements that help you produce a masterpiece rather than an ordinary snapshot. I call these the ABCs of fine photos. The best picture shows a single and simple idea; this supports the slogan that less is more.

While the Civil War was fought outside, the conflict was “made” inside schools, churches, and other places where ideas were shared and debated. Seminary Ridge Museum and education Center, located in (the original building of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg) is the greatest place to study the conflicts in the first half of the 19th century. On July 1, 1863, the conflict came to the back door of the seminary during the first day of the battle. Following the battle, the building was transformed into a hospital for wounded of both sides who convalesced there for two and a half months.

5 This course will be a field trip to that historic site with a presentation that will shed new life on often overlooked topics in Civil War history.

Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center is located on Seminary Ridge. Three floors of exhibits connect individuals and groups to the dilemmas which led to the Civil War, provide a powerful and personal view of the battle's first day, and show the work of one of the battlefield's largest field hospitals.

Join us for a tour of the US Army Heritage and Education Center located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The center engages, inspires, and informs the Army, the American people, and global partners with a unique and enduring source of knowledge and thought. When exploring the Soldier Experience Gallery, visitors experience the United States Army through the eyes of the men and women who lived its history, in war and peace, from the Spanish American War to current operations in Afghanistan.

The exhibit also features hundreds of artifacts, oral history recordings accessible from your smartphone, a movie theater, and the opportunity to write a letter to a currently serving Soldier. In addition, guests may test their marksmanship at the digital shooting range, parachute into Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion, and experience a night attack during the Korean War.

Following the museum tour, participants will have an opportunity to enjoy lunch at the Spoons Café offering delicious homemade soups made from scratch, hot paninis, hearty sandwiches, wraps, and fresh salads made to order.

7 Spring Extension 2021 Instructor Biographies

Warren Eshbach is an ordained minister, retired Pastor, and former District Executive Minister in the Church of the Brethren. He has the following degrees: B.S. , M.Div., Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg (now ), D.Min., McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, ILL. He served as an adjunct Professor at Lutheran Seminary Gettysburg, Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond Indiana, and was a docent at the Seminary Ridge Museum.

Rosemary Firestone was appointed by the Wellsville Area Historical Society to be the Tour Director for the Little Red School House in 2011. She had attended the Stoney Run School House (Northern York County School District) for the first two years of her formal education and was trained for this position by Mrs. Judy S. Weber, the motivating force behind the restoration of this school.

Jean Handley was born in Pittsburgh, PA and has been a life-long resident of PA. Jean has B.A. in Psychology from Gettysburg College and M.Ed from Kutztown University. She has been the Dauphin County Coordinator for Fair Districts PA since March 2017. Fair Districts PA is a non-partisan, all volunteer coalition of PA citizens working for Congressional and State Legislative redistricting reform to establish a more transparent and accountable process and put an end to Gerrymandering in Pennsylvania.

Linda Henkel is a lifetime crafter. She has made many different crafts sold at local craft shows and donated to nonprofit groups.

Robert T. Mann As a young adult, Bob Mann served as a missionary in Africa for 17 years. During that time he developed an avid interest in photography as a hobby. He made the transition from film to digital imaging over 25 years ago and learned to do computer photo editing. He applied his photo interests to family, travel and wildlife, and for the last 18 years has created an annual family photo calendar to share photos with his family. Bob and Carolyn are residents in a Village Commons apartment.

Lauren McNaughton has worked in health care since 2002 in jobs ranging from Emergency Department Secretary to Nursing Management and Education for an Intensive Care Unit. Ms. McNaughton has been practicing as a Registered Nurse since 2007. She has been educating about essential oils since 2014. In 2019, she received her certification as a Holistic Health Care Practitioner. Lauren lives on a small homestead with lots of animals.

8 Barbara Passeri Warfel has a reputation for excellence as an artist and instructor of oil painting and drawing in South Central Pennsylvania. She holds a B. A. in Art from Rowan University and did graduate study in advanced drawing and ceramics at the University of Hartford.

Sharing her artistic vision and knowledge is a great joy. In 1998, Barbara designed and implemented an arts program especially for senior adults. She has also given art instruction in drawing and painting at the Art Association of Harrisburg and The Art Center School and Gallery. In October 2006, she received Jump Street’s "SPECTRUM AWARD for Excellence in the Arts." In 2008, she authored a manual entitled Simple Lines Make a Difference. The goal of this manual is to share her knowledge and experience engaging seniors with meaningful, creative art activities.
