Apollo Theater Presents The Originals: DMX Featuring N.O.R.E., Jim Jones, Jadakiss & Friends with DJ Scram Jones Friday, August 5, 2016 - 8 p.m. The Apollo Theater will present The Originals: DMX featuring N.O.R.E., Jim Jones, Jadakiss and friends with DJ Scram Jones, an epic hip hop concert featuring some of New York‘s most legendary emcees. This one night only concert will see the iconic Theater returning to its hip hop roots with all of the artists in the show having performed on the Apollo stage early in their careers and throughout. The Apollo helped foster the careers of many legendary hip hop artists throughout the 1980‘s, 1990‘s and 2000‘s, including Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z and DMX. From the Cold Chillin‘ record label beginning its first national tour at the Apollo in 1988 with the Juice Crew All- Stars to the Notorious B.I.G. introducing then up-and-coming artist Jay-Z to the Apollo audience to Def Jam hosting its Survival of the Illest Tour in the late 1990‘s to the Apollo‘s presentation of the international Hip Hop Dance Theater Festival, Breakin’ Convention, in 2013 and 2015, hip hop has always been a major part of the Apollo‘s rich legacy. DMX, one of hip hop‘s most talented rappers and a founding member of Ruff Ryders, shot to stardom in 1998 with his debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, which shot to number one on the pop charts. The Grammy award-nominated rapper is the first artist in history to have their first four albums enter the charts at number one. With nearly two decades under his belt, hip hop and reggaeton artist N.O.R.E. first rose to prominence as one half of the popular East Coast hip hop duo Capone-N-Norega. Today the Queens rapper continues to make music and is the host of the popular podcast, Drink Champs which launched in early 2016 along with his seventh solo project Drunk Uncle. Harlem native Jim Jones is a founding member of the hip hop collective The Diplomats, also known as Dipset, alongside Cam‘ron, Freekey Zekey and Juelz Santana. In 2006, Jones released his third solo album, Hustler’s P.O.M.E. (Product of My Environment) which spawned the hit single ―We Fly High.‖ He recently released his fifth studio album, The Kitchen. Since signing with Bad Boy in the early 1990‘s, Jadakiss has gone on to become one of the most respected hip hop artists in the industry. Starting his career as a founding member of the hip hop trio, The LOX, alongside Styles P and Sheek Louch, Jadakiss also achieved solo success with the release of his debut solo album, Kiss tha Game Goodbye. Most recently, he released his fourth studio album, Top 5 Dead Or Alive. 3 Tickets are $45, $60, $75 and $100. VIP tickets are $150. All tickets will be available at the Apollo Theater Box Office: (212) 531-5305, 253 West 125th Street. Ticketmaster at 1-800- 745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com. Live Nation Presents Jill Scott Tuesday, August 9, 2016 - 8 p.m. Celebrated soul and R&B singer/songwriter Jill Scott will make her Apollo debut as part of her U.S. summer tour on Tuesday, August 9th, at 8 p.m. Originally discovered by Questlove of The Roots during a live poetry reading, the three-time GRAMMY award-winning artist would go on to release three studio albums and earn three Grammys, including Best Urban/Alternative performance for 2005 hit ―Cross My Mind.‖ Equally acclaimed as a poet and actress, Scott starred alongside Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson in Why Did I Get Married? and was featured in Lifetime‘s Sins of the Mother and Steel Magnolias.

MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol. 14, No. 2–3 #djlife During the Pandemic: Reflections from DJs Rearranging Relations and Improvising Continuity Mark V. Campbell and Ayşe Barut Across multiple social media platforms, the hashtag #djlife has offered a glimpse into what DJs do in both their online and offline lives. Some DJs post their remixes, others post their practice sessions or their latest booking. Globally, as nightclubs closed their doors and festivals cancelled their 2020 editions in response to COVID-19, DJs were forced to reconsider how to maintain their livelihoods. Like most performers in popular culture, the DJ’s public visibility is tied to their continued relevance, so with two major arenas—festivals and nightclubs—closed, DJs had to quickly find a way to engage their fans. For many DJs, livestreaming themselves mixing records became a way to continue connecting with their fans. While several DJs were already livestreaming, such as DJ Mel Boogie on her Toronto-based radio show Studio B on Vibe 105 FM, many more delved into streaming for the first time during the pandemic. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram became the go-to sites for various kinds of livestream events during the pandemic. Verzuz, a visual webcast series presented, created, and launched by multi-platinum producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz at the end of March 2020, quickly established viewership records as it went viral. Each Verzuz online event features two prominent recording artists squaring off “against” each other in a friendly competition, each sharing their esteemed catalogues. With high profile artists in events such as Jill Scott vs.

  • “Rapper's Delight”
1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that. We were trying to make a buck.3 Richard Taninbaum (percussion) As early as May of 1979, Billboard magazine noted the growing popularity of “rapping DJs” performing live for clubgoers at New York City’s black discos.4 But it was not until September of the same year that the trend gar- nered widespread attention, with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” a fifteen-minute track powered by humorous party rhymes and a relentlessly funky bass line that took the country by storm and introduced a national audience to rap.
