Lopez claimed his third Olympic Games gold medal at super heavyweight by sneaking past reigning world champion Riza KAYAALP (TUR) in the 130kg final at Rio 2016, while world champion Vlasov followed up a win in London four years ago with another gold medal performance in Rio de Janeiro. Of the four remaining Greco-Roman champions crowned at Carioca Arena, only Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) at 59kg was able to match Vlasov by moving seamlessly from world champion to the Olympic Games gold medal – his first. Like Lopez, two-time world champion Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM), who slipped to No.2 in the rankings at 98kg after a loss at the European championships in March, reclaimed the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB). Meanwhile, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) went from third to No.1 at 85kg with a win over world champ Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and 2014 world champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) carved his way through a crowded field at 66kg to go from No.6 in the rankings to No.1.

  • Janikowski Byabangard to No3 Lorincz to No5 in Grecoroman World Rankings
From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Janikowski, Byabangard to No.3, Lorincz to No.5 in Greco-Roman World Rankings Date: March 3, 2016 at 2:57 PM To: [email protected] Janikowski, Byabangard to No.3, Lorincz to No.5 in Greco-Roman World Rankings By William May, United World Wrestling CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (March 3) – Damian JANIKOWSKI (POL) and Tamas LORINCZ (HUN) muscled their way to big wins at the Hungarian Grand Prix in February and the No.3 and No.5 position at their respective weights in the United World Wrestling rankings for February. Janikowski’s return to form in recent months has lifted him from a seventh place at the world championships in September to the third spot in the 85kg poll behind world champion Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and European Games gold medalist David CHAKVETADZE (RUS). Lorincz, meanwhile, has climbed from ninth place in Las Vegas to fifth at 66kg after back-to-back victories at the Zagreb Open and the Hungarian Grand Prix – the latter featuring a win over 2014 world champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB). World champions Belenyuk and Selcuk CEBI (TUR) were the only Las Vegas winners on the mats in February as the top spots in the United World Wrestling rankings for Greco-Roman remain unchanged for a fifth month in a row. Cebi returned to action at 80kg with a win at the Ljubomir Ivanonic Gedza International in Belgrade, while 85kg champ Belenyuk prevailed at the Ukraine International – his third tournament since winning the world title last September. Heading into March, world champions Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB), Rasul CHUNAYEV (AZE) and Riza KAYAALP (TUR) have yet to slip on the competitive singlet – although Kayaalp is slated to wrestle in the upcoming European championships and Chunayev is listed as an alternative.

From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Vlasov, Seven of Eight World Champs Top Pre-Olympic Greco-Roman Rankings Date: July 28, 2016 at 7:10 PM To: [email protected] Vlasov, Seven of Eight World Champs Top Pre-Olympic Greco-Roman Rankings By Bill May, United World Wrestling CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 28) – London 2012 gold medalist Roman VLASOV (RUS) closed out the 2016 “regular season” with a triumph in Madrid as seven world champions head to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on top of the United World Wrestling rankings for Greco-Roman. Vlasov, who was welcomed to 2016 with a shock loss at the Ivan Poddubny tourney in January, capped pre-Olympic preparations with an 8-0 technical fall over fellow Rio qualifier Yurisandy HERNANDEZ RIOS (CUB) in the 75kg final at the Grand Prix of Spain. In addition to Vlasov’s win in Madrid, three more world champions and rankings leaders were also in action in July, wrapping up their Rio 2016 regimen with victories at the German Grand Prix in Dortmund. Local favorite Frank STAEBLER (GER) stopped 2015 world bronze medalist Artem SURKOV (RUS), 2-1 for the 66kg crown and his third tournament title since winning the world title in September. Turkey’s world champion duo of Selcuk CEBI (80kg) and Riza KAYAALP (130kg) also recorded victories in Dortmund for some momentum heading into Rio 2016. Cebi, who qualified for Rio at 75kg, edged KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR), 3-1, in the 80kg final to ensure himself the top spot in this non-Olympic weight category.

From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: World Champs Back in Action, But Greco-Roman World Rankings Hold Steady Date: June 3, 2016 at 1:00 PM To: [email protected] World Champs Back in Action, But Greco-Roman World Rankings Hold Steady by William May CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (June 3) – With the Rio 2016 qualifying results in the books, world champions returned to action in May making their presence known in the United World Wrestling Rankings for Greco-Roman. At the “last chance” qualifier in Istanbul, world champions Rasul CHUNAYEV (AZE) and Selcuk CEBI (TUR) qualified their countries for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in categories lighter than where they won their titles in Las Vegas. Chunayev, the world champ at 71kg, romped through the field at 66kg to secure Azerbaijan its fifth entry in the classic style for Rio. Cebi, meanwhile, was steady in his four wins at 75kg, opening the door to the likelihood that six world champions from the last four years will vie for the gold medal at the Rio Games. Cebi’s victory also helped him regain the top spot at 80kg, where he is reigning world champion, one month after surrendering the position to European under-23 champion Lasha GOBADZE (GEO). Three of the world champions currently ranked at 75kg – Peter BACSI (HUN), Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM) and Saied Mourad ABDVALI (IRI) – were also in action over the last six weeks and climbed into the top 10 at welterweight. World champs Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM), along with Julfalakyan, shook off some of the mat rust with wins at the Trophee Milone tourney in and were joined by world medalists Armen VARDANYAN (71kg), Dmitri TIMCHENKO (98kg) and Aleksander CHERNETSKI (130kg) – all of Ukraine.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Fraught Collaboration: Diplomacy, Intermediaries, and Governance at the China-Vietnam Border, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Joshua C. Herr 2017 © Copyright by Joshua C. Herr 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Fraught Collaboration: Diplomacy, Intermediaries, and Governance at the China-Vietnam Border, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries by Joshua C. Herr Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Richard Von Glahn, Chair Scholarship and opinion on the history of international borders have tended to think of them as modern institutions that originated in Europe and were imposed globally through colonial expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Historians, moreover, have focused predominantly on the process of border genesis. My study of the China-Vietnam border in the seventeenth and eighteenth century takes a different tack. The subject of my study is an international border in Asia that existed well before significant European involvement in the region and, in fact, well before the period covered in this study. Rather than border genesis, my interest is in the nature of a pre-European, pre-nineteenth century border in Asia and how this “old” border changes over time. ii This dissertation is structured chronologically as well as thematically. In my chapters, I trace the evolution of the China-Vietnam border in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in three aspects: diplomatic relations, local society in the borderlands, and border governance. In varied measure, the chapters reflect three perspectives, namely the view from the two courts, the view from local and translocal society, and the view from state representatives on active service in diplomacy and the border.
