2005-2006 YEAR-IN-REVIEW

12th Year 2005-06 marked the 12th year for the Southern Connecticut Conference… The year was filled with many athletic, academic, and artistic events and accolades that involved and recognized our 23,000 students from our 23 member schools.

4th Annual SCC Student Leadership Conference A Success! The 4th Annual Southern Connecticut Conference “Student Leadership Conference” was held on Tuesday, November 22 on the FINDING LEADERSHIP The goal of the “SCC Student campus of Quinnipiac University… Over 370 student-leaders from Leadership Conference” is to impart of the conference’s 23 member schools participated in the event… The a sense of obligation and commitment theme of the 2005 conference was “Finding Leadership”… A keynote upon the students to continue and enhance their roles as leaders and use these roles address was given by Ms. Anne Parmenter who shared stories from to better their surrounding environments. her recent mountain climbing expeditions, most recently in 2004 when she climbed Mount Everest, and reflect on various attributes of leadership and communication in her journeys… After the keynote address, the student- leaders broke up into smaller group discussing various leadership-related topics… The event sponsor was Bank of America… Bank of America’s Market President Jeff Klaus participated in the conference and even hosted a breakout session for the faculty advisors.

4th Annual SCC Arts Exhibition The fourth annual SCC Student Arts Exhibition SCC Arts Exhibition Winners was held the week of April 24-29 at the Creative 1st Prize - Mohamed Badawi (Career) $100 - mixed media 2nd Prize - Lindsay Rohr (Guilford) $75 - ceramic Arts Workshop in New Haven… A grand opening 3rd Prize - Allison Elgan (Amity) - $50 - photo of the show with refreshments, sponsor 4th Prize - Anna Lee (Cheshire) - $40 - charcoal hand recognition, and award presentations occurred on 5th Prize - Jose Soto (Lyman Hall) - $35 - portrait April 25… The exhibition featured over 60 student- Honorable Mention: originated visual arts in a variety of media… Each Kelly Dapp (Derby) – sculpture; Massimo Pileggi (Guilford) - SCC member school had the opportunity to mixed media sculpture submit up to three works… Prizes were awarded by a jury of professional artists and arts administrators coordinated through CAW Executive Director Susan Smith… For the third straight year, the Specialized Packaging Group, Inc. was the event sponsor.

Jazz Festival For the first time, several SCC schools got together to host jazz festivals during the spring and received tremendous compliments for quality and enjoyment… Jazz ensembles from Hamden and Xavier performed in April… On May 18, two schools – Sheehan and North Haven – hosted events… At Sheehan, Jonathan Law, Amity and Cheshire participated, while North Haven hosted Branford, Derby and Wilbur Cross… Plans for 2006-07 are already in the works to enhance this already-enjoyable experience!

12th Annual SCC Scholar Leader Banquet The 12th Annual Scholar Leader Banquet was held on March 27, 2006 at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven. 46 students representing the 23 SCC member schools were recognized for their outstanding scholarship and leadership in their respective school communities… For the second straight year, UHY Advisors LLP was the participating event sponsor for the SCC Scholar Leader Banquet.

SCC Diversity “Dream Teams” - Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges Under the direction of Branford assistant principal Dave Maloney and in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League, the SCC Diversity Dream Teams - Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges – had another successful year… The program held its final session of the 2005-06 academic year on May 16 at the Jewish Community Center in Woodbridge... Over 125 students representing the 23 member schools participated in the year-long program and helped produce the 2005-06 Annual Report - a thoughtful and compelling compilation of our schools’ and students’ works... The Annual Report can be downloaded on the SCC website.

SCC Captains Council Luncheons The SCC Captains Council luncheons are held three times a year, bringing together the captains before their respective seasons start to provide guidance of what it means to be a captain and the responsibility that comes with the position.

State Championships It was another successful year as SCC member-schools fared extremely Amity Wins “4” well in league and state-wide competition… All told, SCC teams captured Amity won a league-best four state championships 20 state championships (8 fall, 8 winter, 4 spring) during the 2005-06 in 2005-06... Three other academic year… Twenty-three additional teams (9 fall, 6 winter, 8 spring) schools (Branford, Hand, earned runner-up status in CIAC state competition… Since the league’s and Cheshire) each won three. inception in 1994, SCC schools have now won 239 state championships. Did you know? The Best of the Best! In the 12 years of the SCC, Cheshire has won You can make a very good argument for the overall strength of the SCC the most state titles of any when you look at the final state rankings of pretty much every sport… member school (47). However, to have the “best team” is even more impressive…

FOOTBALL – Xavier is Tops! Xavier finished as the top-ranked team in all three final state high school football polls…. The Falcons (12-0), who captured the SCC Division I West title, defeated Southington, 45-30, in the Class LL championship game. It is Xavier’s first state title since joining the SCC in 1994… It is the second straight season that a SCC school earned the consensus number-one ranking (Hand, 2004)… West Haven, the SCC Division I East champion and Class LL semifinalist, and Hand, the three-time defending Class M champion, also were ranked in the top ten in all three polls.

BOYS BASKETBALL - The “House” is Back! In the final state boys’ basketball polls, the SCC and Division I champion Hillhouse (27-0) was the consensus choice as the top team in the state... The Academics defeated East Catholic, 81-43, in the Division I finals… Fellow SCC members Xavier (18-7), who lost to Hillhouse in the Division I semifinals, Wilbur Cross (20-4) also made the top ten.

BASEBALL – A Spartan Effort! In the final state baseball polls, the SCC and Class LL champion Amity (25-2) was the choice as the top team in the state... Amity is the first SCC team since Notre Dame (2000) to be voted the top team in Connecticut... Fellow SCC member and Class L champion Branford (18-8) also made the top ten and SCC runner-up and Class LL quarterfinalist Xavier (17-9) also received votes. Year in Review - cont.

Who Do You Root For? Because of the overall success and depth of the SCC, many times league schools have to square off in CIAC playoff competitions… In 2005-06, there were three CIAC championship games pitting SCC schools against one another… In the fall season, there were two All-SCC championship games... In field hockey, the Class M final pitted Branford and Hand with the Hornets prevailing, 1- 0... In football, Hand and Hillhouse met in the Class M final with the Tigers winning, 34-0… Finally in the spring, Mercy met Amity – a rematch of the SCC championship game two weeks earlier – in the Class LL softball final with the Tigers winning, 4-1.

Xavier Wins Walter Camp Award Xavier High School of Middletown, which was ranked No. 1 in the The SCC Kelly Trophy? New Haven Register, New London Day, and Hartford Courant Since 1994, six SCC teams have season-ending polls, was the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s earned the Kelly Trophy from the Walter Camp Football Foundation. choice to receive the Joseph W. Kelly Trophy, which is awarded annually to Connecticut’s top high school football team… Xavier Cheshire - 1994 and 1995 captured the SCC Division I West title on its way to a perfect 12-0 Hand - 1997, 2004 West Haven - 2002 record and the Class LL state championship… Xavier had previously Xavier - 2006 defeated Trumbull, 20-7, in the semifinals…

Change is Good Several sports incorporated some changes in their postseason tournament formats in 2005- 06… All told, the changes allowed for The SCC baseball tournament increased from four to six teams, while the softball tournament expanded from four to eight teams… After several years of having Division I and II postseason tournaments, boys lacrosse held an eight-team playoff that decided one SCC champion.

SCC Football Divisional Structure Didn’t Change The current four-division format for football, introduced starting with the Balance is Good 2004 season, was evaluated after a proposed two-year scheduling In the two years of the four-divisional cycle… However, the Scheduling Committee, chaired by Guilford format for football, eight teams have either won or tied for a divisional athletic director Chip Dorwin, announced that there will be no changes title... Tennis Holds Playoff for First Time The SCC held its first-ever postseason tournament for boys and girls tennis in 2006… The format was a four-team, single-elimination tournament between the four regular-season division champions and Cheshire (girls) and Amity (boys) emerged victorious... With the addition of the boys and girls tennis playoffs, the SCC now hosts postseason tournaments for 23 of its 26 interscholastic sponsored sports. Year in Review - cont.

Three Cheers for the Cheerleading Competition!!! Cheerleading Final Results The SCC hosted its first-ever Cheerleading Competition on Saturday, February 4, at Shelton High School… Fourteen SCC 15-under division Champion- SHELTON (89.5 pts) schools participated in the competition in three different 1st runner-up - NORTH HAVEN (82.5) categories – 14-under squad size, 15-over squad size, and co- 2nd runner-up - WEST HAVEN (74.5) Others: Cheshire (71), Sacred Heart Academy ed… Schools scheduled to compete include Amity (14-under), (71), Foran (70.5), Jonathan Law (63.5), East Branford (co-ed), Cheshire (15-over), Daniel Hand (14-under), Haven (62.5) Derby (14-under), East Haven (15-over), Foran (15-over), 14-under Division Champion - HAMDEN (88 pts) Guilford (14-under), Hamden (14-under), Jonathan Law (15- 1st runner-up - AMITY (73) over), North Haven (15-over), Sacred Heart Academy (15-over), Others: Guilford (72), Derby (72), Daniel Hand Shelton (15-over) and West Haven (15-over). Division II Hockey to Get Postseason Tournament The SCC Board of Governors approved a Division II ice hockey tournament in 2006-07... The four- team tournament will be contested at a site to be determined... It will be the league’s first postseason tournament since 1999... “It’s obviously a good thing for our league because our ice hockey student-athletes get to play for a SCC title and I give credit to the Division II coaches for pursuing this,” SCC Commissioner Al Carbone told the New Haven Register... “Our league has the best hockey in the state (16 state titles in 12 years) – so I look forward to the competitiveness of the tournament. I know it will be successful”... In 2005-06, the SCC had teams in all three CIAC championship games and won two state titles (Hand in Div. II; Cheshire in Div. III).

Good Sportsmanship... Cheshire added to its Division III ice hockey state title by being named the “Ray Crew Sportsmanship Award,” which is given to the SCC Division II team in honor of the former Sheehan ice hockey coach... Xavier earned the first-ever “Dick Gagliardi Sportsmanship Award,” which is given to the Division I team in honor of the former Hamden coach and SCC ice hockey chairperson… In addition, the Central Connecticut Board #6 of Approved Basketball Officials presented the Xavier boys basketball team with the 2006 Walter D. Akerley Sportsmanship Award.

SCC and the Michaels Cup ... Four SCC member schools - Amity (Class L), Hand (Class MM), Branford (Class MM) and Mercy (Class SS) – were recognized as finalists for the Michaels Cup, which is presented to the state high schools which overall athletic excellence.... SCC teams captured four state championships in the spring season to bring the final total to 20 for the 2005-06 academic year. Since the league’s inception in 1994, SCC schools have now won 239 state championships.
