BRAHMS: Viola Sonatas, Op. 120 A These are the "clarinet" sonatas, so called because Brahms composed them for a clarinetist friend. They Paul Doktor, violist. Nadia Reisenberg, A were published alternately for the viola, however, and the rich, mellow tones of this instrument are perfectly pianist A suited to them. Doktor's superb musicianship weaves a mood all its own, but Miss Reisenberg's sensitive Westminster WN- or SWN-18114 12" pianism is complementary in the extreme. The sound is unusually lifelike. RP GINASTERA: Quartet No. 1 B-B Ginastera's slow movement has a certain atmospheric beauty; its mingling of impressionism and jungle LAJHTA: Quartet No. 7, Op. 49 A-A evocations recalls early Villa-Lobos. His fast movements, however, are built on rhythmic ostinati that become Paganini Quartet B-B tiresome. La¡hta is a kind of Hungarian Virgil Thomson. His language is diatonic, spiced with dissonance and Decca DL-9823 12" Magyar tunes. His Opus 49 is attractive but inconsequential. Earnest performances. AS LECLAIR: 6 Violin Sonatas • Leclair's music does not stray far from the idiom of his time (when polyphony was "old fashioned" but George Alès, violinist; Isabelle Nef, harp- • melodic writing had not yet found its strength). These sonatas are thoroughly violinistic, and if the listener sichordist • can occasionally predict the next passage of sequential modulation there are compensating moments of London L'Oiseau -Lyre OL-50087 8 2-12" lovely invention. Playing is vigorous, musical, sometimes rough in tone. SF PROKOFIEV: Violin Sonata, op. 94 A-B The transcribed flute sonata of Prokofiev has enjoyed a succession of variously KAREN KHACHATURIAN: Violin A-A superb performances on LP.

While Rosalyn Tureck was in town, she gave a master class in the auditorium of Scott Hall.

  • AUSTIN V. COLUMBIA GRAPHOPHONE CO
AUSTIN v. COLUMBIA GRAPHOPHONE CO. – ALLEGED MUSICAL COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. The report below is taken from The Stage, 5th, 12th 19th and 26th July 1923, with obvious mistakes tacitly corrected. Click for other reports: - a fuller report in The Times - a shorter report in Musical Opinion - a summary of the legal implications in The Solicitor’s Journal - a personal memoir in a biography of Frederick Austin by his grandson, Martin Lee-Browne You can hear relevant recordings by clicking on the links found at bottom of this page. In the Chancery Division, on Tuesday, before Mr. Justice Astbury, an action was heard in which Mr. Frederic Austin, the composer, proceeded against the Columbia Graphophone Co. to restrain an alleged infringement of his copyright in the music of the opera “Polly,” and the passing off of defendant’s gramophone records, entitled “Selections From ‘Polly’” as being the records of the plaintiff’s work. Damages were also claimed. The defendants denied infringement, and denied the passing off. Mr. Luxmoore, K.C., and Mr. McGillivray were for the plaintiff; and Sir Duncan Kerly, K.C., and Mr. Henn Collins represented the defendants. Mr. Luxmoore said under the Copyright Act, when gramophone records had once been made of plaintiff’s music anyone else could make records, provided they had done from plaintiff’s music, upon a royalty being paid; but if it was necessary to make a score for the reproduction, the making of the score was an infringement of the plaintiff’s copyright. The most valuable right with regard to gramophone records that plaintiff had was his right to first production.

These are the days of little books, and when the author was asked to add one to their number, he accepted the invitation with the jaunty simplicity of an inexperienced hand, thinking that it could not give him much trouble to expand or otherwise modify the account given of early Britain in larger works ; but closer acquaintance with them soon convinced him of the folly of such a plan— he had to study the subject for himself or leave it alone. In trying to do the former he probably read enough to have enabled him to write a larger work than this ; but he would be ashamed to confess how long it has occupied him. As a student of language, he is well aware that no severer judgment could be passed on his essay in writing history than that it should be found to be as bad as the etymologies made by historians are wont to be ; but so essential is the study of Celtic names to the elucidation of the early history of Britain that the risk is thought worth incurring.

Senate Finance and Public Administration Legislation Committee ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ON NOTICE ADDITIONAL ESTIMATES 2013-2014 Finance Portfolio Department/Agency: Department of Finance Outcome/Program: 3/3.1 Topic: Senators’ Offices Senator: Senators Bernardi, McKenzie and Smith Question reference number: F50 Type of question: Hansard F&PA Committee, Page 94, 25 February 2014 Date set by the committee for the return of answer: Friday, 11 April 2014 Number of pages: 12 Question: CHAIR: Yes, I understand that and I think I acknowledged it. So are you able to tell me who owns the building where Senator McEwen's office is located? Mr House: We could take that on notice. CHAIR: Thank you. But I would also be interested in other senators' offices as well. For example, in South Australia, who owns the office that, say, Senator Farrell occupies for another few months? Mr House: We could take that on notice as well. Senator McKENZIE: And for Victoria, please—Senators and Members. Mr House: We could take that on notice as well. Senator JACINTA COLLINS: I can tell you the Freemasons own mine. Senator McKENZIE: Then you will not be on the list, Senator Collins. CHAIR: We have always had our suspicions! Senator SMITH: That is probably a secret! Senator DASTYARI: Senator Bernardi, ask about my office. Ms Moy: Senator, can I just confirm that you are looking for the owners of the buildings that are leased for senators and members in Victoria and in South Australia. Senator SMITH: Add Western Australia to that. Ms Moy: And Western Australia. CHAIR: Yes, I think I would be interested in getting that list.

  • The Elgar Society JOURNAL
The Elgar Society JOURNAL FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE MARCH 2001 Vol.12 No.1 ELGAR AND WARLOCK (PHILIP HESELTINE) Barry Smith [Until recently Barry Smith was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cape Town, and is presently Organist and Master of the Choristers at St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town. He is founder and director of the St George’s Singers, and has made frequent recordings for radio, television and compact disc. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music and the Guild of Church Musicians. A noted authority on Peter Warlock, his writings include the widely acclaimed biography Peter Warlock : The Life of Philip Heseltine (OUP, 1994), and Frederick Delius and Peter Warlock : A Friendship Revealed (OUP, 2000). He has also edited a four-volume collection of Warlock’s miscellaneous writings about music (Thames Publishing).] On the surface the coupling of the names Elgar and Peter Warlock (Philip Heseltine) would seem rather far-fetched. Just as there is little of the modal, ‘pastoral’ or ‘folk-song’ elements in Elgar’s music, so are there few traces of nineteenth century German Romanticism in the music of Warlock. Yet, if one delves deeper into their characters and their music, there was much in common between these two composers. Both were self-taught, both felt at times alienated from society, both suffered from bouts of depression, and both have a completely original, uniquely personal quality displayed in their compositions. Besides the innate yet really indefinable ‘Englishness’ of their music, a work by Elgar (despite the obvious influences of the German Romantic school) has a stamp all of its own just as a piece by Peter Warlock (in spite of his early obsession with the music of Delius and later van Dieren and Bartók) has a musical language that is absolutely his and his alone.
