Contemporary Women's Writing 11.1 (2017): 102-120. https://doi.org/10.1093/cww/vpw044 Realistic Man, Fantasy Policeman: The Longevity of Ruth Rendell’s Reginald Wexford Ruth Rendell first introduced Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford in From Doon with Death in 1964; we last see him 49 years later in No Man’s Nightingale. Rendell develops the protagonist in her detective series, which includes 24 novels and five short stories, by adapting the conventions and tropes of the detective and police procedural genres set forth by her predecessors like Georges Simenon, Dorothy Sayers, and Ed McBain. However, while her detectives operate within the framework of the fictional Kingsmarkham police department, Rendell did not stifle Wexford with mundane bureaucratic constraints. Instead, she focused on presenting a realistic man with idiosyncrasies, shortcomings, and fears, as well as a character who adapts to the changing social and cultural environment alongside the reading public. Rendell has called Wexford “a fantasy policeman in a fantasy world,” using investigative methods which do not always adhere to standard police procedures (Salwak 87). As a result, forensic details are also largely missing from her narratives, such as in-depth descriptions of autopsies, lab processes, and coroner reports found in other contemporary crime novels and popular television programs. She said, “The wonder is that thousands of readers (including policemen!) seem to like it this way” (87).

The non-readers in Rendell's novels also have a special position . The murderer in The Hou se of Stairs is a non-reader but even so she is influenced by w hat other peopl e read. Non-readers often share the view that reading is an tisocial or that it is difficult to und er stand th e fascination that book s, those "small, flattish boxes"l have for their read ers. But Burd en is the most notoriou s non -reader w ho co mes to mind. His evolu tio n is ske tched throughout the Inspector Wexford mysteries. In From Doom with Death (1964) he thinks that it is not healthy to read, but Wexford lends him The Oxford Book of Victorian Verse for his bedtime reading, and the effects on his turn of phrase are immediate: 'I suppose the others could have been just-well , playthings as it we re, and Mrs. P. a life-long love.' 'Christ!', Wexford roared . 'I should never have let you read that book. Playthings, life-long love! You make me puke' (p. 125).     67 A Case of Mistaken Identity An Analysis of Ruth Rendell's Novel An Unkindness ofRavens Gert Michael BURESCH This crime story is one in the series of Ruth Rendell's very popular Wexford novels and was published in 1985 as her 28th book. She was and is a prolific writer; since the publication of her first work From Doon with Death in 1964, she published at least one book per year. The name for her protagonist occurred to Rendell after a trip to Ireland, and initially two names were in the running, Wexford and Waterford. She selected Wexford, as she is fond of names that include the letter "x". Rendell's production can be divided into three genres. Her first novel introduced the character of Inspector Wexford and the fictional southern town of Kingsmarkham which represents a microcosm of society. Her second book was the first of her crime thrillers not to contain the presence of Wexford. Rendell alternated these two series until 1986, when, under the name of Barbara Vine, she published her first psychological novel, A Dark-Adapted Eye. The Vine novels differ from the Rendell ones as they feature deeper psychological characterization and a more sustained social critique. I Ian Rankin said, "There is a tension within her - there were things she couldn't do in a Wexford book so she invented Barbara Vine. Her Vine novels often discuss the bizarre nature of London - the haves and the have-nots walking in the same park but never meeting."2 68 According to Wilbur Smith, Rendell suffers from the tag of being a detective novelist.

THE RE-WRITING OF A WELL-READ MAN, OR WHAT HAPPENED TO WEXFORD Ritva Leppihalme University of Helsinki Ruth Rendell's fictional Chief Inspector Wexford is presented to source-text readers as a man who frequently expresses his thoughts and feelings by using preformed literary material. This paper discusses his use of allusions and the translation strategies adopted by Rendell's Finnish translators. An analysis of some examples shows that the strategy of minimum change does not support the consistent characterization of Wexford as witty, empathetic and grounded in his own culture. The strategy may be linked to presumed reader expectations as Rendell's type of crime fiction, where psychological and social factors are as important as the plot, seems to have few target-cultural parallels. Keywords: translation strategies, cultural literacy, allusions 1 INTRODUCTION The of-construction in the title is an objective genitive; the well-read man is Ruth Rendell's fictional Chief Inspector Wexford. The question of what happened to him refers to the translation process, the process of re-writing whereby a character who is delineated for both British and international readers in English, turns into one who speaks and appears to think in Finnish, even while operating in a world that is clearly not Finnish, as shown by such things as the names of the characters, places and institutions. Reginald Wexford and his foil, Michael Burden, make their first appearance in Rendell's detective story From Doon with death (1964: referred to below as Doon).
