Winning Habits AFL Riverina May 8th REP ROUND PREVIEW WFITH FJAIKNE ALTIELRI PREVIEW Northern Jets v TRYC Magpies The Northern Jets were in a good position to ruin the 50th anniversary celebrations at CSU last week but Josh Avis’ squad ran out of the legs in the last quarter, instead conceding three goals and scoring just two behinds in the final term of the 33 point loss. The Jets can’t afford any lapses when they welcome a The Rock-Yerong Creek side that bounced back after last week’s poor outing against Marrar. The Magpies found a new forward target in former Bombers premiership player Shannon Williams, who kicked six against Barellan, meanwhile Joey Kerin and Dean Biermann continue to provide headaches for opposition defenders. While the Jets have an in-form forward of their own in Matt Wallis, they probably lack the avenues to goal at the moment to make them a viable challenge to the Magpies. Prediction: TRYC by 33pts Last time they met Round 10, 2019 Northern Jets 16.15.111 def TRYC 13.14.92 Barellan Two Blues v North Wagga Saints One of just two winless teams remaining, Barellan’s disappointing start to the season looks poised to continue when they welcome the 2019 Farrer League premiers in round five. North Wagga is coming off its most impressive win of the season after the Saints delivered the previously unbeaten Marrar its first loss of the year, limiting the high-powered Bombers to just eight goals. Conversely, Barellan’s run of competitive outings came to an end thanks to a bitterly disappointing outing against The Rock. The Two Blues were never really in the game and managed just one goal to three quarter time and just 2.6 for the game. Barellan were seldom able to control the footy in the rare moments they were in possession and that’s a trend that is unlikely to be flipped after just a week and with the Saints coming to town. North Wagga should be too fast and too talented for the Two Blues to present any real threat. Prediction: North Wagga by 52pts Last time they met: Round 10, 2019 Barellan 3.2.20 def by North Wagga 12.15.87 REP ROUND PREVIEW WFITHF JAIKNE ALTILERI PREVIEW Coleambally Blues v EWK Hawks It may have come a little later than many expected but Coleambally is finally on the winners list after a comfortable win against Temora in round four. The Blues made up for a three weeks’ worth of slow starts with an eight-goal opening quarter against the Kangaroos, and they’ll need a similar start if they’re to stay within striking distance of a formidable East Wagga outfit. Jade Hodge has kicked 13 goals in three games for the Blues and has quickly asserted himself as one of the in-form forwards of the competition, but Coleambally will need to find extra avenues if they’re to compete with a Hawks team that has no shortage of firepower of their own. EWK is fresh off a bye that should benefit some banged up bodies and while I’d like to hope Coly is back to the premiership contender we thought they were before the season, it’s too early to assume they’ll have enough to overcome the Hawks. Prediction: East Wagga by 30pts Last time they met Round 10, 2019 Coleambally 6.12.48 def by EWK 12.8.80 Marrar Bomber v Temora Kangaroos Marrar suffered its first loss of the season against North Wagga last week and that could be the worst possible news for this week’s visitors, Temora. The Kangaroos remain winless after a big loss to Coleambally, and while the Roos’ showed brighter signs than previous weeks, the fact that they managed just two goals after half-time would be a great disappointment. Young Joseph Morton has been a bright spot for Temora, as has Jack Cullen, who kicked two goals against his old club last week. As for the Bombers, a third quarter lapse was the difference in their loss to the Saints in round four. Conceding five goals after the main break proved to be the death blow for Shane Lenon’s squad, who were otherwise neck and neck with North Wagga all day. James Lawton was kept quiet with just two goals, but I’d expect that to change in a big win at home against the Roos. Prediction: Marrar by 68pts Last time they met Semi-Final, 2019 Marrar 15.11.101 def Temora 8.9.57 REP ROUND PREVIEW WRITH JFAIKEN ALTIELRI PREVIEW Griffith Swans v Wagga Tigers This shapes as a battle between two teams that find themselves in very similar positions, that being recently on the receiving end of substantial drubbings at the hands of Mangoplah. Both the Tigers and Swans lack of pace and intent was on display against the Goannas but they have the ability to show their resilience at Exies Oval on Saturday. While many of the 2019 players have since departed their respective teams, you can rest assured Griffith would be keen to get one back over the team that beat them in the 2019 Grand Final. Tigers coach Murray Stephenson could be the difference in this game. The Swans displayed an inability to handle key forwards last week (Trent Castles and George Kendall combined for 11 goals) and if a player the calibre of Stephenson can get on the move early and often it’s hard to see home side reining him in. Tigers win a close one on the road. Prediction: Wagga Tigers by 11pts Last time they met 2019, RFL Grand Final Griffith 8.7.55 def by Wagga Tigers 11.9.75 GGGM Lions v Leeton Whitton Crows Simply put, Ganmain was very impressive against Collingullie last week. The Lions staved off a spirited Demons resistance in the first half, only to then put the foot down and display no mercy in a 12 goal to one rout after half time. Riverina Championship MVP Matt Hamblin was outstanding in the middle and showed his innate goal sense with six majors to his name, while George Alexander and Riley Corbett continue to be a handful for key defenders around the league. The Lions have done everything possible to be considered premiership contenders at this point. Leeton-Whitton on the other hand is still chasing its first win despite being thereabouts in every game so far. The Crows have bounced out to early leads in each of their three games but have failed to turn these first quarter displays into winning performances. Prediction: GGGM by 34pts Last time they met 2020 Riverina Championship, Preliminary Final Leeton-Whitton 12.15.87 def GGGM 5.16.46 REP ROUND PREVIEW WRITH JFAIKEN ALTIELRI PREVIEW Coolamon Rovers v MCUE Goannas Undoubtedly the game of the round, Coolamon and Mangoplah should have a better idea of where they sit after this clash of unbeaten teams at Kindra Park. The Hoppers have won three from three, albeit not in the most impressive of fashion given their inaccuracy in front of goal. Meanwhile, the Goannas have hit the ground running and possess the second- best percentage in the competition after Ganmain. For those that enjoy key forwards, this is the game for you. Between Kendall, Castles, Redfern, McGowan and the potentially returning Matt Harpley, there could be plenty of goals to go around if the forward entry is as fast and furious as we’ve seen from the clubs recently. While it’s tough to pick against the Hoppers at home, the Goannas deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt after a dominant opening two rounds of the season. Don’t be surprised if we see these clubs meet more than twice this year. Prediction: MCUE by 20pts Last time they met Round 12, 2019 Coolamon 10.8.68 def MCUE 7.7.49 Narrandera Eagles v Collingullie GP Demons Both Narrandera and Collingullie are coming off round three losses they’d rather forget after defeats losses to the Bulldogs and Lions respectively. The Eagles fancied themselves further along than their recent results would indicate and will be keen to make amends at home against a Collingullie team they defeated the last time they played in Narrandera back in 2019. The Demons were physically and mentally beaten in the second half against Ganmain last week. Not only were they handily battered on the scoreboard but also caught the ire of the umpires and saw a pair of cards after some undisciplined flag flying turned sour. While last week’s loss was out of character, the Dees should bounce back to the competitive brand of footy that saw them defeat Griffith and compete with Coolamon in the first two rounds of the season.
