FORGOTTEN SPLENDOUR A Chronology of the North Shore Music Festival 1909 to 1939 by Andrew Cottonaro Beginning in 1909 and lasting until 1939, the North Shore Music Festival of Northwestern University was a significant musical and social event in the Chicago area. For a few days each Spring, the campus hosted a diverse body of performers in a series of grand concerts. Naturally, some of that era’s most eminent singers could be heard there. Their presence certainly helped to sell tickets and their artistry helped to sustain the festival as a popular and critical success. Now, sixty years later, the festival hardly even counts as a faded memory. To date, two books (in part), offer a general outline of the festival’s history, but both lack any detailed analysis of who appeared and what was actually sung. This is the first attempt to present a chronology of the vocal offerings (quite distinct from the orchestral offerings) at the festival. Northwestern University, the official sponsor of the festival, is located in Evanston, Illinois (USA). The town is a suburb of Chicago, directly north of the city and on the banks of Lake Michigan. Because of this geographic position, Evanston and the other cities of the area are called the North Shore, hence the origin of the festival’s name. Northwestern University was incorporated in 1850 and gradually won recognition for its academic excellence. The establishment of musical studies, however, was a tangled web of many failed efforts. In a final and desperate attempt to salvage musical education, the university’s board of trustees in 1891 appointed Peter Christian Lutkin (1858-1931) to direct musical studies, a post that he held until his death. -

The result, Lewisohn Stadium, named after its principal benefactor, Adolph Lewisohn, and modeled much along the lines of an ancient Roman coliseum, became that and much more. -

One of their sayings is “The stage is the school of life.” A very large percentage are good musicians, so that wherever even a small group lives, they are sure to have a very good band. A Guide to the Cornhusker State Czechs—A Nation of Musicians An importantCzechoslovakian folklore is music. Song and music at all times used to accompany man from the cradle to the grave and were a necessary accompaniment of all important family events. The most popular of the musical instruments were bagpipes, usually with violin, clarinet and cembalo accompaniment. Typical for pastoral soloist music were different types of fifes and horns, the latter often monstrous contraptions, several feet long. Traditional folk music has been at present superseded by modern forms, but old rural musical instruments and popular tunes have been revived in amateur groups of folklore music or during folklore festivals. "Le Roi d'Ys" ("The King of Is"), an opera in three acts and five tableaux, text by Edouard Blan, and music by Edouard Lalo, was performed for the first time May 7» 1888, at the Opera Comique, Paris. The overture, with which this evening's program opens, was written some years before the entire work was completed, and follows, in point of years, soon after the "Symphonie Espagnole," which was presented on the recent Elman program. Lalo gained considerable reputation in both Germany and France, though his dramatic work received but tardy recognition. -

Present Use: Performing arts and concert hall, now called Orchestra Hall - Paradise Theatre. Restoration is in progress. Statement of Orchestra Hall resembles the typical theatre of its Significance: day, with a restrained and elegant adaptation of Renaissance style that preceded the exhuberant eclecticism of the next decade. It was designed with emphasis on concert requirements, but was fully equipped also for use as a motion-picture theatre. Its appearance and superb acoustics re- 1% flect the ability of C. Howard Crane, a Detroit architect who became one of the most notable national and international architects of the "Movie Palace." Crane's Orchestra Hall, Detroit's first true concert hall, was considered to be one of the finest in the country. Built originally to obtain the services of Ossip Gabrilowitsch as permanent conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, during his tenure the hall was the scene of performances by many renowned artists. Later, as the Paradise Theatre, it offered outstanding concert jazz.
