Welcome to Our Story Bastrop is a founding part of what’s made Texas great. In fact, it’s one of the Entering the 20th Century oldest towns in the Lone Star State. It was established by Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas himself, during the Colonial period of the Republic of Mexico. After years of effort, Bastrop succeeded in attracting a rail line in 1886, which In 1832, it was officially named for the town’s earliest and most important ally, prompted many modernizations including a bridge over the river, an opera house, Phillip Nering Bogel, the Baron de Bastrop. and a bank. The 20th century began with the development of lignite coal mines just north of town that led to further prosperity and the immigration of numerous Mexicans who worked in the mines. EARLY DAYS As the western-most town in Texas, Bastrop lay deep within Native American territory and was subject to frequent raids by several hostile tribes. Later, many DEPRESSION ERA local men volunteered to fight in the Texas Revolution.
