Hal Pierce Star Valley During 1877 Moses Thatcher and Bishop William B. Preston had explored this valley and were impressed by its beauty and potential. There was evidence that Shoshone Indians had previously been there but were not in the area at that time. On 29 August 1878 Elder Brigham Young, Jr. dedicated it as a gathering place for the Saints. In 1880 the city of Afton became the first settling place and the valley was then named Star Valley because it was a star among valleys. The location was then praised in an article in the Logan Utah newspaper during September 1880. Archibald Gardner visited the valley and asked Bishop C. D. Cazier for advice and explained he was looking for land and a good place to set up mill sites. Although he was happily settled in Jordan Utah he needed a place to avoid being arrested as a polygamist. The Church issued a Manifesto against polygamy in 1890 which eliminated the threat of his being arrested. For a time Archibald boarded with Catherine Carpenter in a room that was exposed to the outside elements (garret) and without sufficient bedding. He suffered from exposure to the weather and never fully recovered from it. -

Fleming Although a handful of visits to Philadelphia were made throughout the 1830s, Mormon proselyting began there in earnest in 1839. This endeavor was part of a larger proselyting effort that had begun a year earlier through- out the counties surrounding Philadelphia. Lorenzo Barnes and Elisha Davis had met with great success in nearby Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Benjamin Winchester had also made numerous converts in central New Jersey.1 The next summer, Winchester began proselytizing in Philadelphia. At first, he “was ridiculed on almost ev[e]ry occasion when I enquired for a house” to preach in, yet he persevered. Winchester finally found a hall and “a crowded congregation attended the meeting.” After Winchester preached there about a dozen times, he debated with a Presbyterian minister, “which was the means of doing much good. By this time there was quite an excite- ment, and the former prejudices of the people seemed in part removed.” Winchester baptized several in Philadelphia, “and I feel myself authorized to say that the work of the Lord is gaining ground, in this city: and I trust that it will still roll on.”2 Joseph Smith’s visit to the area on his way to Washington, D.C., in the winter of 1839–40 spurred further growth of Mormonism in the area. A local newspaper reported that the Prophet “visited New Egypt, Hornerstown, and Toms River [New Jersey] and sealed a large number to the church.”3 Joseph also established branches in Philadelphia and Chester County, STEPHEN J. -

Landon At least as early as 1862, Brigham Young directed Latter-day Saint lead- ers in St. George to construct a tabernacle, a building designed not only for church services, but which also would serve as a social and cultural center for the entire community. In a letter to Mormon Apostle Erastus Snow, Brigham Young clearly noted that the tabernacle would represent more than a place of worship: As I have already informed you, I wish you and the brethren to build, as speedily as possible, a good substantial, commodious, well finished meeting house, one large enough to comfortably seat at least 2000 persons and that will be not only useful but also an ornament to your city and a credit to your energy and enterprise. I hereby place at your disposal, expressly to aid in building the aforesaid meeting-house, the labor, molasses, vegetable and grain tithing of Cedar City and of all places and persons south of that city. I hope you will begin the building at the earliest practicable date; and be able with the aid herein given to speedily prosecute the work to completion.1 Brigham Young’s efforts to encourage Latter-day Saints to settle in St. George, indeed in all of southern Utah, had met with mixed results. Even George A. City Cemetery Pioneers
These pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled westward from Illinois to escape religious persecution and build a prosperous society of their own in today’s state of Utah. Upon arrival in 1847, these determined individuals immediately set to work in developing the Salt Lake Valley and beyond with rapid success. Later generations of Latter-day Saint settlers, many listed here who were Piee & Chc NfLNcE buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, have also had tremendous inuence on their religious community and the history of the state. 1 Edward R.
