The aim of this study was to provide a description of the ecology and numbers of the species and discuss conservation management plans that will effectively ensure its survival. Because 98% of the population breeds in Namibia, all dataTown for the study pertaining to the species’ breeding biology were collected here. Overall breeding success (probability of fledgingCape one chick per pair per season) in Namibia was 0.36, althoughof breeding success fluctuated between seasons and colonies. Predation of eggs and chicks was found to be the main factor impacting the breeding success of Damara Terns. Chick growth rate was slower than that of chicks of similar species. Resources allocated to growth favoured initial development of legs, then wings, and lastly, bill. Immature survivalUniversity from fledging to breeding was estimated using mark- capture-recapture techniques and found to be 0.59 (95% confidence interval=0.48–0.68). This estimate includes an element of chick mortality. The survival estimate for chicks older than 23 days (fledging age) was 0.84. Age at first breeding was found to be three to four years. Annual adult survival was found to be 0.88 (95% CI=0.73–0.96). Annual dispersal between two adjacent breeding colonies was 0.06 (95% CI=0.03–0.12); these low i dispersal probabilities indicate that protection of breeding sites is an important management approach for the species. Prey capture success of Damara Terns in relation to six environmental variables was investigated at two colonies in southern Namibia. Prey capture success was greatest at high tide, strong winds and in least turbid water. Overall prey capture success was 30.5%. (SD=3.1%). Mining activities, in the form of discharging sediment into the sea where breeding Damara Terns fed, were not found to overall significantly impact the breeding success of Damara Terns at one colony in southern Namibia. The effectiveness of conservation measures on breedingTown Damara Terns was assessed at a colony vulnerable to extensive recreational off-road vehicle disturbances in central Namibia. The study found that Damara Terns benefited from reduced disturbance becauseCape the access restrictions prevented entry to the colony by off-road vehicles. of A review of all accessible information of breeding populations in Angola, Namibia and South Africa found that 70 breeding colonies exist globally. The breeding population of Damara Terns was estimated to range up to 5370 breeding individuals. The continued survival of the species requires an urgent updated Universitysurvey of the breeding population to reassess the species’ conservation status. Conservation measures should focus on the protection of important breeding colony sites in Namibia, and also at the extremities of the range in South Africa and Angola. On migration along the west coast of Africa, and during the non-breeding season in West Africa, legal and enforced protection of Damara Terns from human disturbance (such as off-road driving trampling nests, trapping and killing birds, indirect disturbances affecting breeding and feeding habitat) is required. ii Layout and contributions This thesis consists of eight main chapters, most of which are written as papers for submission to a journal. Tables and figures follow the text of each chapter; references for all chapters are combined at the end of the thesis. I collected all field data in southern Namibia from January 2007 to March 2009, and at various colonies in central Namibia from December 2009 to February 2010, and have contributed to field data collection at most other Damara Tern colonies since 1995. I collated, computerized and validated monitoring data for Damara Terns collected by staff of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism for various breeding areas fromTown 1982–1993 and by Rod and Sigi Braby who monitored the breeding sites called Caution Reef and Horses Graves from 1995–2010. Without their fieldwork various aspects of this thesis would not have been possible; theirCape vital roles will be acknowledged in co-authorships of the forthcoming series of papers. I was responsible for the analysis and writingof of each chapter. I discussed some of the fundamental ideas with my supervisors, Les Underhill, Rob Simmons and Jean-Paul Roux. Les Underhill (and to some extent, Jean-Paul Roux and Rob Simmons) advised on methods of data analysis. All three supervisors assisted with the wording of some methods sections and commented on chapter drafts. Jessica Kemper,University Rod and Sigi Braby , Res Altwegg, David Wiggins, Teresa Catry, Nicole Braby, Rene Navarro, Mariette Wheeler and Katrin Ludynia commented on some of my chapter drafts. Other populations are not federally listed. Federal Wetland Status: N/A Description: Georgia's smallest tern at about 23 cm (9 in) in length with a 50 cm (20 in) wingspread, the least tern is white with pale gray feathers on the back and upper surfaces of the wings, except for a narrow black stripe along the leading edge of the upper wing feathers. The least tern has a black cap with a small patch of white on the forehead. In summer, the adult has a yellow bill with a black tip and yellow to orange feet and legs. Its tail is deeply forked. In winter, the bill, legs and feet are black. The juvenile has a black bill and yellow legs, and the feathers of the back have dark margins, giving the bird a distinctly "scaled" appearance. The least tern's small size, white forehead, and yellow bill serve to distinguish it from other terns. Similar Species: The adult sandwich tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis) is the most similar species to the adult least tern, but is much larger at about 38 cm (15 in) in length and has a black bill with a pale (usually yellow) tip and black legs. Juvenile least terns and sandwich terns look very similar in appearance.

Damara Terns Sterna balaenarum nest at high densities on the central Namibian coast and overlap in both space and time with vacationing fishermen and quad bikers. This results in high non-hatching rates of up to 50% and reduced breeding success for the densest known colony of terns. In November 2000, information boards and a barrier preventing off-road vehicles from entering a Damara Tern breeding site near Swakopmund were erected. Comparisons between nesting density, hatching success and vehicles passes before and after these measures showed that nesting density increased slightly (12 to 15 nests/km2/month), hatching success increased from 56% to 80% and vehicle passes dropped from 870 per month to zero. The overall result was a doubling of the number of chicks hatched in the study area. The success of this approach augurs well for similar approaches to other conflicts between semi-colonial coastal-breeding birds and visitors. New breeding records from southern Namibia and a nesting record from 11.5 km inland are also detailed in our attempt to elucidate the ecology and conser- vation of this rare seabird.

Jakarta Bay, with an area of about 490 km2, is located at the edge of the Sunda Straits between Java and Sumatra, positioned on the Java coast between the capes of Tanjung Pasir in the west and Tanjung Karawang in the east. Its marine avifauna has been little studied. The ecology of the area is under threat owing to 1) Jakarta’s Governor Regulation No. 121/2012 zoning the northern coastal area of Jakarta for development through the creation of new islands or reclamation; 2) the condition of Jakarta’s rivers, which are becoming more heavily polluted from increasing domestic and industrial waste flowing into the bay; and 3) other factors such as incidental take. Because of these factors, it is useful to update knowledge of the seabird fauna of Jakarta Bay, part of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. In 2011–2014 we conducted surveys to quantify seabird occurrence in the area. We identified 18 seabird species, 13 of which were new records for Jakarta Bay; more detailed information is presented for Christmas Island Frigatebird Fregata andrewsi. To better protect Jakarta Bay and its wildlife, regular monitoring is strongly recommended, and such monitoring is best conducted in cooperation with the staff of local government, local people, local non-governmental organization personnel and birdwatchers.

By managing parks, their irreplaceable assets and unlimited potential will be conserved for future generations. In addition, every year Namibia’s National Parks draw large numbers of tourists, generating employment and stimulating development nationwide. National Parks also provide unique opportunities to benefit local communities through rural development while providing research, education and recreation opportunities. One of the protected areas in Namibia is the Skeleton Coast National Park. The name Skeleton Coast suggests a dramatic history and difficult conditions for human survival. These qualities make the park an attractive destination for eco-tourists. Similarly, its fine angling reputation attracts large numbers of fishermen from southern Africa and elsewhere. Altogether it is an area of international significance, set within a larger transboundary landscape that covers the length of the Namib Desert. This management plan sets out the objectives and guidelines for the management and development of the Skeleton Coast National Park.

    LEAST TERN Sternula antillarum non-breeding visitor, occasional; rare breeding visitor monotypic The Least Tern breeds across the s. United States S through Mexico and the Caribbean, and it winters in C-S America (AOU 1998). This species and the closely related Little Tern are difficult to distinguish, which has led to uncertainty about the status of each species in the Hawaiian Islands (Clapp 1989; see Little Tern). Least Tern appears to be more common than Little Tern, with substantiated records from Midway to Hawaii I, confirmed breeding attempts at both of these locations, and evidence for successful reproductive efforts as well on O'ahu and possibly French Frigate Shoals. As with Little Tern, the majority of records involve adults and one-year old birds in May- Aug, and several records of juvenile and first-fall birds in Aug-Oct reflect the likelihood of local reproduction. Least and Little terns were split at the genus level from Sterna by the AOU (2006). In the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, well-documented Least Terns have been recorded from Kure 6-8 Aug 2016 (HRBP 6662-6663); Midway 5-10 May 1989, 13-14 Sep 1990 (2 individuals), 5-22 Jul 1993 (pair), 15 Jun-Sep 1999 (3 adults involved in an unsuccessful breeding attempt; Pyle et al. 2001, NAB 53:436; HRBP 1234-1236, 1289- 1292 published NAB 55:5-6), 8 (along with 2 Little Terns) 8-10 Sep 2002 (Rowlett 2002), 2 on 22 Jun 2015 (HRBP 6658), and at least 2 (among 12 Sternula terns) 22 Oct 2016 (HRBP 6664).

Primary moult, body mass and moult migration of Little Tern Sterna albifrons in NE Italy. Ardea 84: 99­ 114. Large post-breeding gatherings of Little Terns Sterna albifrons are regu­ larly observed in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. Here, during five consecutive \ 1/ trapping seasons, 2956 birds were examined and ringed. Their breeding area, as indicated by 163 direct recoveries (mainly juveniles, ringed as chicks), spans over a broad sector of the Adriatic coasts, with colonies lo­ cated up to 133 km far. During their stay at the study area, adults undergo an almost complete moult. Two partial primary moult cycles can be ob­ \ served, the first of them being suspended when 2-4 outermost long primar­ ies have not yet been shed. Pre-migratory body mass build-up, enough for a ~/ flight longer than 1000 km, takes place during the very last days before de­ parture to the winter quarters, in most cases when the moult has reached a I suspended stage. Active primary moult and body mass increase do overlap in late moulting birds (after 27 August), indicating that the two processes are compatible, in case of time shortage. Post-breeding movements to the Lagoon of Venice seem to fit most requisites of moult migration.
