Very romantic and close to artists, cafes, fine dining and shopping. The apartment itself is very cute and clean. Gail is most helpful and friendly. Cons: The bathroom was as quirky as advertised, but it was manageable. Tips: Check out the festival scheduling before booking. We had not realized in advance that there was a huge festival that week in Montmartre that blocked off several roads and made it impossible for cabs and buses to access, so we had to walk up and down several large staircases with our luggage. Another tip is to familiarize yourself with European washer/dryer combos. Thank you so much for the wonderful Paris experience. We loved the quaint apartment, wine and incredible view! Jordan Green – Lakeland, Florida September 2019 Gail’s place is perfect! It overlooks the best/most authentic Parisian place in the city. We absolutely loved the location with only one exception: it is about 20-30 minutes from the other main attractions in Paris and that commute involves big elevation changes, many flights of steep stairs, and a longer train ride through less than magical areas of Paris with locals who occasionally did not always make foreigners feel welcome. However, Montmartre lovely charm made all of this worth it in our opinion. The apartment is spacious and we felt more than held its value. We loved all the small cafes below and wandering through the quaint streets in right outside the door. The neighborhood is usually bustling with tourists which made us feel safe at all times. Gail is a wonderful host, who responded quickly, spoke perfect English, met us by the apartment to show us around, and provided great recommendations for our trip. Highly recommend a stay here. Right in the center of Montmartre, it gave us a perfect neighborhood feel away from the city while also being walking distance from any shops or cafes we wanted to visit. We loved the artists' square that it was looking over, and sat in the cafes right below it to end a few evenings on our trip. Conveniently, there is a metro stop right around the corner but walking to many of our destinations let us see the beautiful streets of Paris. The place was very clean, welcoming, and unique and was perfect for the two of us staying in it. Overall, the location and apartment exceeded our expectations and made our trip extremely easy to plan. Gail and Georgina were also very helpful throughout the experience. We always got timely responses and they were very easy to contact. If there was ever a problem, they went out of their way to make our trip the best that it can be, and we are very thankful for it! The apartment also has a list of restaurants, attractions, and other helpful tips for first time visitors that we found very helpful as well. The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate.
