2018 Juror for Selections & Awards Ratindra Das | | AWS(DF), NWS, TWSA(DM)

There is no better reason to paint than just for the love of it. I enjoy, I struggle and I exult. Sometime I will not follow the norms and rules of watercolor. Those who write prose will go by the rules, poets will not. Painting is a visual poem". --- Ratindra Das Ratindra Das is a Dolphin Fellow and a signature member of the American Watercolor Society. 2018 Juror Statement Ratindra Das | Illinois | AWS(DF), NWS, TWSA(DM)

It’s a humbling, exhausting and exhilarating process to juror a show of artists, especially when they all work on a professional level. Signature status is meaningful. It validates artists where and how they stand with their peers. It’s competitive as well as inspiring. Judging a show of this stature makes me wonder what’s more dificult—to juror a show or to paint! When you paint as an artist you are alone working in your own small garden. It’s very private! Not so when your work assumes a public life. I congratulate those who submitted their work and those whose works were selected. As competing artists we all know that unfortunately there is a limited number and I needed to work within that parameter. As much as I tried to be objective, I am not without biases and likings. In my defense, I often quote “There is no room for democracy in art”. To me it is more intuitive than an analytical process. Every painting evokes certain emotion. When the emotion of the artist and the juror strike the same chord it resonates. The selection process is the result of this resonance. This response is likely to be different for another juror, or another artist, or another person. Thanks to those who have shared their work with us, and last but not least, to those individuals and patrons who put together such a wonderful show. Enjoy the ride!

Fallbrook Art Center’s Annual International Signature American Watermedia Exhibition World of Watercolor & Beyond How this Unique Show Came To Be

The Center had already established itself in watercolor exhibitions having been the only venue in the Country to host both the National and American Watercolor Societies’ Travel Exhibitions (NWS & AWS) together every other year (the only venue in the U.S. to do so) from 1998 through 2008. Then things changed - AWS was no longer available to us, so we began to pair the NWS show with independently curated shows working with Watercolor West with their member works and Original Early California watercolors from Fallbrook’s CaliforniaWatercolor.Com. While these were stellar shows, we wanted to come up with something special that we could call our own as a permanent ‘companion’ exhibition; not only to present with our scheduled bi-annual NWS travel show exhibitions, but to ‘stand-alone’ for the in-between year presentations for our annual ‘World of Watercolor’.

The result is what you see today. I worked with Fallbrook resident artist Robin Erickson (AWS, NWS, CWA, WW, SDWS, TWSA) and we realized there was no showcase for ‘Signature Members’ so we decided to start one. To my knowledge, it’s still the only show of its kind in the United States with participation limited to artists who have achieved oficial Signature Membership status in one or more established U.S. watercolor/watermedia societies. Frank Webb, AWS(DF), NWS, Juror of the Inaugural Exhibition commented “I found the entries were very competitive since only credentialed artists were qualiied, whereas most of the big shows are open to all.” This year marks our 9th annual show, and the number of artists submitting works continues to grow, we attract a large number of visitors, tours, student groups, and enjoy robust sales.

This year’s presentation features 120 paintings from artists across the United States., Singapore, and Malaysia selected from 398 submissions by Juror Ratindra Das, AWS(DF), NWS, TWSA(DM). The works are diverse in subject matter, technique, and style … experimental to traditional, all in watermedia - transparent watercolor, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, casein, inks, and collage.
