  • Joe Bacal and Lexus Secure First Off Road Championship
Joe Bacal and Lexus Secure First Off Road Championship September 13, 2010 Victory at Primm 300 Clinches Title in First Full Year of Competition PRIMM, Nevada, September 13, 2010 – Just 15 months ago, Joe Bacal and Lexus surprised the off-road racing establishment with a trouble-free run to victory in the team’s very first race at the 2009 Baja 500. Since that first success, the Cancer Treatment Centers of America-sponsored team has enjoyed an unbroken streak of wins and podium finishes that on Saturday culminated in their first off-road championship with a dominant Stock Full-class win at the SCORE Terrible’s Las Vegas Primm 300. “We came into this racing series as off-road racing rookies but we also came prepared,” said Bacal. “We did our homework and were confident the Lexus would be fast and reliable. Of course it helps to have a great team and sponsors behind you, too. Things have worked out pretty well.” Well enough, in fact, that Bacal’s JTGrey Racing team is now a Lexus factory-supported effort. Up until recently, the luxury automaker provided help on a limited basis but is now fully behind the team leading into the upcoming Baja 1000, and is committed for the 2011 season as well. “Having Lexus’ full support behind our racing program is huge,” said Bacal. It has also helped to have a driver with the grit and determination that Bacal—a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor—has brought to the racing program. Thus far he has driven every mile of every race, including the 2009 Baja 1000.

The Baja 500 that year drove home the point that everyone's pit-to-pit comm's are always, at best, a crap-shoot. Bob "the Weatherman" Steinberger made some scathing on-air comments regarding everyone's radio communications from remote pitting sites. Specifically, those of the pit-clubs. Upon our return to the USA, we decided to find a way to back up all racers with better comm's. Our primary intent was to keep down-course MAG-7 pits informed of our racer progress and status. A secondary but, no less important goal is to....listen....for anyone who reaches out to us. This way, anyone, MAG-7 supported racer or not, can reach out for help if they really need it.

VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC Media Information 2200 Ferdinand Porsche Drive Herndon, Virginia 20171 www.media.vw.com @VWNews FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Mark Gillies 703-364-7104 [email protected] VOLKSWAGEN MARKS 50 YEARS OF BAJA DESERT RACING The 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000® will run in November, featuring its traditional classes for Volkswagen-powered vehicles The Beetle has more wins in the Baja 1000 than any other model of vehicle HERNDON, VA (October 4th, 2017) — This November, hundreds of racers and thousands of motorsport fans will gather in Mexico for the running of the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000®, one of the most grueling and demanding races on the planet. And as always, the race will feature “Baja Bugs”—modified Volkswagen Beetle vehicles—as well as Spartan racers using Beetle running gear that have shown their mettle across the deserts for five decades and counting in Mexico and the U.S. Born from the dune buggy and off-roading culture of southern California in the ‘60s, the SCORE Baja 1000 has become renowned in motorsports for the scope of the challenge, both in terms of distance and terrain. In 2017, the race course will be approximately 1200 miles long, starting in Ensenada and finishing in La Paz, and is the last round of the four-race 2017 SCORE World Desert Championship. This will be the 43rd time the iconic race has started in Ensenada and the 21st time it will finish in La Paz. Throughout, drivers and navigators encounter rocks, steep gullies, washboard roads, blinding dust and sand pits—all of which only becomes more dangerous when racing at night.
