Oakland looks to lock down spot in NCAA Tournament at Horizon League Championship detroitsportsnation.com/college-sports/amuller/oakland-looks-lock-spot-ncaa-tournament-horizon-league-championship/91281/ Alexander Muller 2/28/2017 Dec 23, 2016; Rochester, MI, USA; Oakland Golden Grizzlies head coach Greg Kampe during the game against the Georgia Bulldogs at Athletics Center O'rena. Mandatory Credit: Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are not only the hottest team in the Horizon League at season’s end (winners of nine straight), but also on the country. And should they continue their hot streak this weekend at the Horizon League Tournament, they will punch their ticket to the dance and surely be a trendier pick for many when filling out their brackets. The final Horizon League Tournament held at Joe Louis Arena takes place starting this Friday, March 3. Thanks to a strong finish to the regular season, the Grizzlies clinched a share of the league title with Valparaiso and earned the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. So what’s been the biggest factors to Oakland’s success in 2016-17? The Grizzlies won ten of their 12 true road games this season, with losses coming at Michigan State (77-65 on 12/21) and at Wright State (88-67 on 01/22). That 83.3 road winning percentage ranks 6th nationally among teams who have played a minimum ten true road games this year. 1/3 Last year, Oakland had among the nation’s best offenses, led by All-American Kay Felder.

More than Kay Felder: Oakland thrives despite superstar’s early departure to NBA fanragsports.com/cbb/more-than-kay-felder-oakland-thrives-despite-superstars-early-departure-to-nba/ By Adam Biggers 12/20/2016 ROCHESTER, Mich. — Kay Felder’s decision to forgo his senior year and hop into the 2016 NBA Draft was supposed to be the beginning of the end for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The absence of one of the most exciting scorers in recent memory was supposed to leave Greg Kampe’s program in shambles this season, said critics. No Kay, no success, they said. They were wrong. Kay Felder is one of the greatest to ever play at Oakland, but the game at OU hasn’t stopped in his absence. Photo: Andy Shippy | FanRag Sports “I think we kind of have a group of guys who have a chip on their shoulder,” said Kampe, who’s seen progression with nearly every player. “When Kay announced that he was going into the NBA, everybody seemed to write our death warrant for this year. Our guys were kind of upset about that. They felt like we were a pretty good team last year, not just a single player…” One year ago, the offense revolved around Felder, who averaged 24.2 points per game — fourth-most in the nation — and led the country in assists, averaging 9.3 per game. On Dec. 22, 2015, Felder scored 38 points during Oakland’s 99-93 double-overtime loss to the then 15-0 and No. 1-ranked Spartans. He was so good that MSU coach Tom Izzo called the display one of the best ever at The Palace of Auburn Hills, the home of the Detroit Pistons and site of the game.

  • From Jud to Magic to Izzo, Lori Soderberg Has Been MSU Basketball's Unsung Hero Chris Solari
From Jud to Magic to Izzo, Lori Soderberg has been MSU basketball's unsung hero Chris Solari EAST LANSING — The one person at Michigan State who owns two national championship rings quietly retired Friday. You likely do not know who she is, which is how Lori Soderberg prefers things. But she has been the nerve center for Spartan basketball for 43 years. How important do those inside the Berkowitz Center feel the executive secretary has been for more than four decades? Enough for assistant coach Dane Fife to place her on MSU basketball’s Mount Rushmore, next to her two bosses — Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo — and her Lansing Everett High classmate Magic Johnson. "She kind of just keeps on trucking and doesn't let anybody or anything get to her," Izzo said Saturday. "I can maybe think of three or four times when she was mad, which is incredible — I mean, working for Jud and me, you should be mad every day. But she never let her emotions go. That's why she was a good balancing act for me. I'm off the deep end a lot, and she's never off the deep end. "I'm gonna miss her." Michigan State men's basketball executive secretary Lori Soderberg stands outside her office Friday at Berkowitz Center in East Lansing, beside photos of her two bosses, Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo. (Photo: Chris Solari, Detroit Free Press) Soderberg’s final official day as Izzo’s primary planner and organizer was Friday. She fought for her coworkers to keep it a low-key deal, not wanting the added attention of an elaborate farewell or stories about her in the press.
