Jamia Condoles Passing Away of Dr. Syed Zahoor Qasim October 20, 2015 Press Release Press Release: Jamia condoles passing away of Dr. Syed Zahoor Qasim A condolence meeting was held today in the conference room of FTK CIT, Jamia Millia Islamia, to condole the death of Dr. Syed Zahoor Qasim, former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia who passed away last night in Max Hospital after a prolonged illness. His Namaz-e-Janaza was held in Jamia Mosque after the Namaz-e-Zuhar today and he was buried in the graveyard of Jamia. Dr. Syed Zahoor Qasim was Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia from 1989 to 1991. He will be remembered as a prominent Indian marine biologist who helped lead India’s exploration to Antarctica and guided the other seven expeditions form 1981 to 1988. He was a Member of the Planning Commission of India from 1991 to 1996. He was an Honorary Professor of universities including Aligarh Muslim University, Madurai Kamaraj University, Anna Malai University and Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Dr. Syed Zahoor Qasim was born on December 31, 1926 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He began his schooling from Majidia Islamia Intermediate College Allahabad, and then moved to Aligarh Muslim University, where he obtained a B.Sc. degree in 1949 and a M.Sc. degree in Zoology in 1951. He stood first in the order of Merit for which he was awarded the University Gold Medal. For several years, he was a lecturer in the Department of Zoology at Aligarh before proceeding to the United Kingdom for higher studies in 1953. In 1956 he completed his D.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from University College of North Wales. His father was Late Syed Zamir Qasim. He is survived by his wife Nawabzadi Begum Sahiba Rampur, and three daughters. He returned to India in December of 1956 and joined the Department of Zoology of AMU as a Lecturer. He became Reader in 1957 and started a new laboratory of Fish and Fisheries in the Department. In 1962, he joined the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Bombay (Mumbai) as a Professor of Fisheries Biology and in 1964, moved to Cochin as Assistant Director in the Directorate of International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Here he extensively worked on biological oceanography especially on the primary productivity of Kerala Backwaters and on the atolls of Lakshadweep.

Lots of articles are being written about Pandit ji and hence I thought of writing about what I heard about him from some of his close associates. Too often people do not write anecdotes about these great people and the interesting tidbits are lost forever when a person dies. The people I am going to describe never wrote about their association with Nehru and hence I thought of putting them on record. I have been lucky to have known them and felt that those interesting stories they told me about Nehru need to be told. I saw Pandit Nehru only two times in my life and had no personal interaction with him. Hence all these anecdotes are from the people who knew him closely. The first time I saw Jawahar Lal Nehru was sometime in 1961. Nehru had come to Lucknow for some meeting either at the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) or Lucknow University and he was supposed to pass through Hazratganj the main thorough fare of Lucknow. Since my father who was in the Congress Party talked a lot about Nehru, I had expressed a desire to see him. He knew Nehru’s program that day so decided to take me with him so we could stand in front of the Mayfair cinema building in Hazratganj from where his cavalcade would pass.

    ICAR Awards 2019 The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi announces the following ICAR Awards: 1. Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award 2019 To recognize outstanding performance by the ICAR institutes, DUs of ICAR, CAU and State Agricultural Universities, three Awards of Rs. 1 0.00 lakh each, Citation, Certificate and a Plaque are given to two ICAR Institutes/NRC/Project Directorates/ National Bureaus (one large Institute and one small Institute each) and one State Agricultural University/DU/CAU. Applications must be submitted in the recommended format and should be duly authenticated and forwarded by the competent forwarding authority. 2.Chaudhary Devi Lal Outstanding All India Coordinated Research Project Award 2019 In order to recognize outstanding performance of the AICRP and its cooperating centers and to provide incentive for outstanding performance in terms of linkages and research output and its impact, one annual award of Rs . 3.00 lakh (Rs. 2.00 lakh for the main coordinating unit and Rs. 1.00 lakh for the best coordinating centre) in cash, Citation, Certificate and a plaque is given to the selected AICRP(s). All the AICRPs, which have been in operation for at least 10 years can apply for the award. Forwarding authority may give a clear cut recommendation regarding the most significant achievements made in the AICRP and the best coordinating centre identified for the award. 3. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Krishi Vigyan Protshahan Puraskar(National& Zonal) 2019 This award has been instituted to promote healthy competition among Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) at Zonal and National Level for application of science and technology in agriculture.
